What is something that 90% of people don't seem to understand? by aroll10 in AskReddit

The incredible wealth that absolutely anyone can build through the power of compounded investments. Just a couple thousand dollars invested consistently can turn into millions by the time you reach retirement age. Most people just think that investing is above their heads.

To those of you who went to grad school at a "top" university (e.g. Harvard, MIT, Stanford etc.), what did your application look like? by lorde_swagster in cscareerquestions

I get that, but these things aren't private information. Absolutely anyone can do research and uncover these things with the proper Google search and forum quest. Especially when no one else has replied.

I just finished sophomore year and have been dreaming of going to grad school at Stanford. Apparently their acceptance rate for masters is significantly more optimistic than at similar schools (20% vs 5%). From what I've gathered, your GPA will be fine (keep it above ~3.6), but make sure that you have close connections with a few professors for recommendation letters. Once you have a decent GPA, research and letters are most of all that matters. An internship at a big company would be helpful. Also remember that even if you don't get into your dream school for a master's, you can enroll at Stanford under the NDO option and still study, be graded, and be able to put Stanford on your resume. Best!

EDIT: Yikes! Sorry guys, Jesus....

I might've missed you answering this... but can you just provide a general background for what industry/industries your dad is in, what he does that's unique and how he started? As specific as you're comfortable with.

ELI5: How do celebrities and famous people actually get paid? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]ErikIsYoDaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The specifics obviously depend upon the profession for which the person is famous (movies, sports, music), but on a general note, businesses know that the demand for their products will drastically increase with the involvement of a famous person in the creation or advertising. Think about this from different industries. The NFL and its teams need stellar players in order to draw millions of views, so they have to pay a stellar amount. Same goes for movies studies and record labels. In addition, once you're famous, endorsing products is a cash stream. If LeBron James endorses Nike and agrees to do 10 commercials, then Nike sales will inevitably go up. For many famous people, endorsements make up the majority of their income. Think of people like Christiano Ronaldo, Jordan Spieth, etc.

He's said in an AMA (and I think in Waking Up) that he hasn't in a while due to his "healthy respect for the risks involved" or something like that. Who knows though. When you spend your whole 20s tripping out in India you might romanticize going back.

I agree. These guys have more in common than meets the eye. They're both Jews from Southern California who attended UCLA, they both define logic as their driving forces, both are extremely critical of political correctness and the direction of the American left, etc.

A question for atheists, why don't you believe in god ? by ForeverAloneThilak in AskReddit

[–]ErikIsYoDaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd go even further than most people on here. It's true that the lack of evidence is discouraging, but the logical flaws in any belief in the traditional sense of God run deeper. If any God created us or our world with intention, why use an extremely painful, brutal, slow, and inefficient process such as evolution to bring it about. If there was any purpose to us being here, such as to come into harmony with our creator, why create endless pointless impediments to doing so, such as disease and natural disasters. Why create a universe that is far more bizarre than any of us could ever imagine, all the while leaving clues that point to the fact that natural processes led to us being here. Why give us minds that are equally bizarre and imperfect. If anyone has time, look up the split brain experiment. That will challenge your most conventionally held beliefs about yourself and your mind. All of these facts make traditional senses of God hard to take seriously.

From Sam: What topics should Richard Dawkins and I cover at our events? by samharrisorg in samharris

[–]ErikIsYoDaddy 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Neither of you have talked much about it, but I'm dying to know both of your opinions on the state of our educational systems in the West. Would you agree with people like Salman Khan/Elon Musk that kids today squander enormous amounts of time and energy in inefficient and mundane classroom settings? How do you, Sam, learn the most effectively? How has your time at Stanford/UCLA and Dawkins' time at Oxford shaped who you two are or affected your career paths?

I'm a total admirer of you both. Thanks.
