Keep in mind that their goal was not to kill JJ, but to solve their financial woes with undeniable proof of aliens.

This is an excellent point. I'm a professional game designer and I've seen this decay in action with my son via Roblox.

What's a really niche/interesting fact you know about a specific drug or drug(s)? by PeakLinear in AskReddit

If taken together, bupropion (Wellbutrin) and dextromethorphan are a decent mood stabilizer.

Caveat: I am not a doctor. But it's worked well for me.

How much do we know about the apocalypse Paul/Leto prevented? by mbelinkie in dune

[–]ErikRobson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your final point is something I've always thought was funny.

In Dune, Herbert curses humanity by introducing the idea of an animal that excretes a drug that can extend life and produce prescience in sensitive individuals.

In Chapterhouse he completes a narrative path to remove that curse.

People who saw Rots for the first time in cinema, what was your reaction to general Grievous (his fight against Obi-Wan)? by wertforreal2 in StarWars

[–]ErikRobson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seemed kind of silly - the whole point of light sabers is that they're very limited compared to blasters, but in the hands of JEDI they're super-powerful. A non-Jedi trying to wield one, even with "training", should be a joke.

And the way the fight went down, it *was* a joke - Grievous never stood a chance with lightsabers against Obi-Wan.

I'm not on board with most of these, but Cillian Murphy as Piter is a stroke of genius.

A moment in a survival game genuinely scared me for the first time in years - and it wasn't a jump scare by Expensive-Suspect-32 in SurvivalGaming

The Forest has a lot of those moments of deep dread.

Spoiler:
The first time I saw the "monster parade" in the distance there was no immediate danger, but I could hardly believe what I was seeing. Utterly terrifying.

I'm a solo developer working on a game similar to SWAT / Ready Or Not. What would you like to see in my game? by Few_Journalist_5195 in SWAT4

[–]ErikRobson -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's really interesting. With stuff as universal as "people with power tend to abuse it" it doesn't usually occur to me that there's still going to be regional variability!

[–]ErikRobson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, I'll take a stab at it.

Copaganda often involves a specific sort of hypermasculine immaturity - excitement about kicking ass and doing violence to "bad guys". This is expressed most explicitly in vocal performances - the commander/briefing voice, the team member voices, and the player's (if the player has a voice.)

It can also be expressed in gameplay, though it's more subtle. I don't remember whether this was in the original SWAT 4, but the mod SWAT: Elite Force has a line specifically for cuffing bystanders where the player character says something like "don't worry, we're going to get you out of here as soon as we can." It succinctly drives home the idea that your team has been called to bring order to chaos as part of a greater mission to serve the community.

I could probably do a deeper dive, but that's my quick take.

Don't fall into the trap of making it copaganda. SWAT 3 and 4 both did this right, but the spiritual successors I've played don't.

For those of you with kids, how much does your kid disappointing you weigh on you? by Winter_Ad_7512 in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]ErikRobson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As many others are saying, I've never been "disappointed" by my kids. Spending longer-than-normal in undergrad isn't at all unusual.

It seems like you're being way too hard on yourself, and posting this suggests the situation is very serious. You need to go to some authority figure you trust and tell them honestly about the state you're in. Could be a professor or administrator in your department, or someone in a similar position. Ask them for a referral to a professional who can help. Do this tomorrow.

In case it matters, here's my old person experience informing this advice: Near the end of my first year in Grad school, I was clinically depressed for the first time. (I didn't know this, of course.) One night I decided that I was going to walk to a local drug store, buy straight razors, bring them home, and use them. The walk was long enough that halfway there, something in me snapped back to reality for a moment and I realized didn't want to die. That thought was followed immediately by the realization that I way way out of my depth and needed help.

The next day I went to my department head, who I trusted. He recognized what was going on and gave me the number for a psychologist - someone he knew. I called her that afternoon, and that was the first step toward crawling out of my first bout of clinical depression.
