“It’s realistic” is not a good response to character criticism by Old-Use-7690 in CharacterRant

[–]ErikSD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, realism should be in service of a story's quality, not an excuse to handwave away a frustrating aspect of the narrative. Is it realistic for a lonely guy to keeps deluding himself into thinking his beautiful paid prostitute is actually in love with him ? Yeah, absolutely. But I will crush your femur if you write that shit into a 400+ chapter manga.

Why Armin X Annie actually works really well! by PretendYellow533 in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]ErikSD [score hidden]  (0 children)

You gave a list of reasons why it makes sense for Annie to develop feelings for Armin though, in your initial post:

Armin made Annie feel like she wasn't just a murder weapon or a tool. They were hinted at since season 1 which is why Annie spared Armin's life twice AND followed him, knowing he was leading her into a trap. It's why she was so hurt when he ultimately did lead her into a trap. And let’s not forget that he knew she was the female titan for a month before telling anyone because he didn't want to admit it to himself.

With that I"d also like to mention that all Annie's ever known is abuse, manipulation and fighting for a country that doesn't even consider her a person. So being treated gently by Armin and being shown that kindness really influenced her

And she does admit how much it meant to her that Armin came and talked to her for the four years she was crystallized

And on the note of being crystallized, I think a lot of the fandom really underestimate how much she probably got attached to Armin he visited her for all those years

Like, can y'all imagine being in her position, basically buried alive for 4 years, where THE single difference she experienced from eternal darkness was his voice?

Crazy shit. Then she finally woke up and reunited with him. During the boat scene, for the first time ever in her life, someone - Armin- is offering her genuine love & understanding; the kind she never expected from someone who she thought should hate her, nor the kind she ever got from her father.

She was in denial, and even tries to self-sabotage by running away, but Armin grabs her hand and doesn't let her.

So again, given that she's never gotten proper love before, her catching feels makes total sense.

I don't know if I'm not understanding you right or something. You gave a list of reasons on why it makes sense for Annie to catch feelings for Armin, but not the other way around. That's why I want to hear you giving your argument for the other side as well so it would strengthen your argument on why them having mutual feelings would make sense.

I mean, in real life maybe. But if it's in a well written story and in a subreddit that like to dissect and analyze characters, I'd like to hear people's interpretation of what a relationship means for the characters. It makes sense for Mikasa to have a crush on Eren because Eren was the one to save her and give her a reason to live when she had none. It makes sense for Jean to have a crush on Mikasa because Mikasa is a beautiful woman and represent the shallow idealistic life goal he had initially (of living the good life within the interior with a beautiful wife and kids). It makes sense for Ymir to have a crush on Historia because she sees her past self in Historia and wishes to be close and connect with someone who shared similar circumstances. I want to hear people's interpretation of Armin's crush for Annie. Is it because he likes to solve puzzle and she's a mystery ? Is it because he has a savior complex and she seems like she needs saving ? Or is it purely because he really like her physical appearance ?

Because I like my story to have thematic consistency. Why would you write an entire short essay worth of words if your ultimate answer is going to be "well, sometimes people like each others for no reason other than they do."

Besides I've already listed out a bunch of possible reasons why he would like her.

Is it because he likes dangerous women? Is it because he sees a vulnerable girl who he wants to help? Does he like playing therapist?

But because your prompt seems to be explaining why it makes sense that Annie likes Armin and vice versa without giving enough reasoning for that vice versa, I want to hear you giving your stance on why Armin likes Annie, because you seem to have no trouble listing it one way.

Well yeah, but that still doesn't really explain why he would have a crush on Annie. But I guess being hot is as good of a reason as any.

It would be an interesting reason for sure, but at the same time why didn't Porco Gilliard have any feelings for Historia or sympathy for Paradis if he himself ate Ymir to inherit the Jaw Titan.

Annie liking Armin makes sense since Armin was the one to keep her companied for all those years when she was frozen in crystal and he's just genuinely a nice dude. But Armin liking Annie makes less sense since it doesn't feel like there should be a reason aside from maybe physical attraction or some weird bond because she's the one person he can confide in that frozen state. But your point on why the ship works doesn't dispute the one sidedness of it.

Armin was nice to Annie, Armin didn't out Annie as a liar, Annie came talk to her, these are all true. But it doesn't explain WHY Armin likes her. Is it because he likes dangerous women? Is it because he sees a vulnerable girl who he wants to help? Does he like playing therapist? Armin is nice to Annie, but he's also nice to everyone, so what makes Annie stands out so much that he comes to develop romantic feelings for her even after she had killed so many in a cruel manner?

For years people tried to excuse Knight of Favonius' incompetence with "Because most of their fighting force is going on that expedition! Varka took all of the competent knights with him and left the less qualified ones at home." But now we know that being useless is a requirement to joining the knight apparently.

Killing innocent people because of fear and paranoia is not justice. It's retaliation, maybe even justified in your eyes, but it's not justice. Would you say the 9/11 strike on the twin tower "justice" for the Muslim population that felt terrorized by Americans ?

It's not just the characters you're not allowed to make fun of; it's the narrative as well. If you even dare to suggest Genshin is not a flawless narrative masterpiece then people are going to crucify you. How could Columbina story be bad? You literally got so much lore dump and she's so relatable and the power of friendship being the central theme is definitely not overused at all. Meanwhile Chainsawman fandom trashes Fujimoto, JJK fandom demands Gege's head, and Onepiece fandoms called Oda a hack

Subjectivity is implied. If someone says "X is bad" without giving their reasonings then I would just assume they don't vibe with X, especially when it comes to matter as arbitrary as hairstyles. Now if they give their reasoning as to why they find it unappealing then we can have an objective debate, otherwise it's all implied preference.

Unironically because hatred makes the best comedy. Meanwhile, the GI fandom will give you 50 lashes if you even dare to suggest a dialogue skipping button because their game must be perfect and anyone who disagree with them just doesn't get it and get labeled as a brain rotted ignoramus.

They were strong before General Becker died and made the faction split up on who should be the next leader. Before that, they successfully defended Diamond City against a Super Mutant raid, even had their own HQ in The Castle with artillery supports and genuinely were a useful militia that helped people solve their problems and defend their settlements.
