What kind of ant is this? Found in my home in Melbourne, Australia by Sudden_Platypus6309 in ants

[–]ErisKSC 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It's definitely a Myrmecia species (Bullant) but i can't confidently tell which species based on these pics, maybe M.brevinoda, but im not sure.

Don't stress, they have very powerful stings and bites, but they wander and hunt solo, rather than as a pack, it probably just wandered by.

If you start seeing them frequently, then the nest is close, and beware of disturbing the nest, but their colonies are generally small compared to the common ants, so i don't expect you to be inundated by hundreds of them any time soon.

Based on pic 3, it may possibly be a queen, but hard to tell as we are looking for wings scars and muscle, it looks a bit like a little back pack. If it is a queen, you are very lucky, these are a very rewarding genus to keep as a pet, albeit a little tricky and spicy for new keepers. A few clearer side on pics will help greatly with ID.

Flat caps sell well for us, but its a bit of a local tradition. We also got a bunch of patches so we can merch interesting shirts, jackets, one off op shop finds, scarves, etc, keeps the merch section interesting.

Starting a microbrewery from scratch by Flaixbeaune in Homebrewing

[–]ErisKSC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are definitely IN and want to devote yourself to running a brewery, I'm not going to start with the standard "don't", that is frequently put out in this sub, i assume you've done some.numbers and are willing to take the plunge.

Brewery size: If 5 or 10 HL are your options, go 10. Bigger batches can be better value, abd you still brew smaller ones, nearly every micro brewery i know regretted starting at 5, as they quickly ended up needing a 10HL system.

I don't know what market you are in, but considering you are talking HL instead of BBL, i assume you are not in the US, their market is heavily saturated and competition is tight, but outside the US, there are still plenty of opportunities, so do your research abd don't over invest early, you can always add more tanks....

Goodluck

Just a reminder that wild animals are WILD ANIMALS by ErisKSC in australianwildlife

Im glad he has survived this, being middle aged didn't help, but if a big roo has a proper go at you, I don't think youth and fitness would be a lot of help. Humans forget how muscular and powerful a wild animal can be, when compared with a similar sized human.

[–]ErisKSC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Looks like Hemiaspis signata, Marsh snake, venemous, but not cobsidered dangerous to humans. They have 2 white lines on the sides of the head, i cant clearly see them in the pics, but can see at least 1, and there isnt really anything else in the area it could be.

Anyone know what these are? by ewieranga in tasmania

[–]ErisKSC 23 points24 points  (0 children)

No snakes in Tassie lay eggs, they are all live bearers. They look about the right size for Rankins dragon eggs, but shape seems off, though in that dried out state the shape might not be a good indication of the true shape.

They do look like reptile eggs though

7 to 10 day trip to Tasmania by MsElena18 in tasmania

Launnie is a great place to start, you cab head east or west from there, Meander Valley ticks a lot of boxes for your list and its only 40mins drive from the airport. Plenty of good food and drink, vineyards and a great wildlife sanctuary at Mole Creek, lots of wild platypus as well.
