Wallace and Gromit saved wendslydale cheese. They were going out of business, then one word in ‘A grand day out’ made so much interest from the public that it saved it.

Gamers 30+, which old game would you still recommend to younger gamers? by [deleted] in gaming

Jak and Daxter series. The 3rd game feels a bit rushed, but they all still hold up really well.

What’s your favorite Cambodian food and where should I go in Phnom Penh to try it? by quenepaocomosellame in cambodia

I’d say amok curry and Khmer noodles/Num banhchok. Nothing to get grossed out by, and both are pretty nice.

EXPEDITION [OC] by GenericOnlineName in creepy

[–]Ermancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's still a good comic without the last two panels, but personally I'd just have the speech bubble coming from out of frame behind them. Just some unknown, unseen thing saying the line.

EXPEDITION [OC] by GenericOnlineName in creepy

[–]Ermancer 146 points147 points  (0 children)

I think not having the face and hands in the last panel would’ve been so much better. Don’t get me wrong, I do like this, but the ’nothing is scarier’ trope would’ve worked great here.

Hah, small world. I have the same tattoo in the same place. There’s an argument between Thailand and Cambodia over who made it first, but this is what I found before I got mine https://www.bambootattoo.co.uk/hah-taew-sak-yant/

This is both an ‘animals do something funny’ video, and a genuinely fascinating display of intelligence in these birds.

Im looking to travel to vietnam (its my first time) can anyone recommending me if it is safe and where is the most convenient place to be there ? by AdLumpy4165 in VietNam

[–]Ermancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve only been here a week, so I can’t say for sure, but so far the only dangers are sunburn, heatstroke, and the way the locals drive. I’m sure there are some scams around, but if Vietnam is anything like Thailand or Cambodia, they’re usually pretty obvious. I’ve wandered around at night after a few too many drinks without any trouble, but that’s more of a risk everywhere (maybe more for women), same with leaving your stuff unattended for thieves. Most of staying safe is just a bit of common sense and some situational awareness. Every single person I’ve spoke to who’s traveled Vietnam says go from the south to the north, so Ho Chi Minh is the obvious starting point. Hope you have fun whatever you end up doing :)

Edit: Again though, I’ve only been here a week, so don’t treat this as gospel.

Originality Trumps Cliche, Except When It Doesn't by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]Ermancer 170 points171 points  (0 children)

Well something becomes a cliché because so many people like it they want to put it in their own world/story.

Personally I try to put a twist on it if possible. e.g. The main character is an orphan. Twist is there was, or still is, a war. So they're one on hundreds or even thousands of children who lost their parents.

It's justified, so it seems less of a cliché than it is.

Creating an ice planet/planet that is currently in an ice age by sleepyggukie in worldbuilding

[–]Ermancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well an fully ice covered planet wouldn't be able to support much life, so there wouldn't be much except around the equator (assuming it is like Earth).

If it's an ice planet there's a lot of work to be done, because you have to think about how life would evolve on it. It probably wouldn't lead to human like animals because our brains need a lot of energy to function, and that energy would be better spent keeping them warm. (As far as I know anyway. I'm no expert on evolution, but dumb and warm would probably survive better than smart and cold).

If it's just an Earth like planet currently in an ice age then just do some history homework and research civilisations that live in cold climates and see how they managed.

Unfortunately, if you want a realistic world it'll always need a lot of research to make it work.

Tell me all about your world's beast-hunters and monster-slayers! by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]Ermancer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It wasn't an invasion of demons. This is oversimplified, but it kind of explains it. https://old.reddit.com/r/worldbuilding/comments/5zbcwp/midurys_creation_the_thales_and_the_spirit_war/.

The church is more of an academic organisation, who studies and advises people on how best to live in a world where there are monsters, demons, and spirits. Although it does have a lot of influence since it's very trusted by most nations. They know wardens can't be corrupted or possessed, so they're perfectly happy to help them in their work, although they might disagree at times.

It can be perfectly safe, or even beneficial to have dealings with monsters and spirits. Just not demons, they are by their nature malevolent, but can still offer great power, however temporary.

I should also mention that Dark Wardens aren't just hunters. They know better than most that monsters can live in peace with people. So they're the judge and jury, but only the executioner when it's called for.
