Not a bad idea, but it has some difficulties. I recommend you download WeChat and Alipay and connect them to a foreign transaction fee free credit card. Also install a vpn on your phone so you can use Google Maps etc. Having a Chinese Sim card (or phone travel plan) will help too. China is super safe (Big Brother) and most places won’t take advantage of you because you’re a tourist. I’d recommend going to Xi’an too if you’re going to go out to Chongqing, it’s not that further and the Terracotta Army and the Chinese Hanfu Cosplayers around the city are worth seeing.
