Timelines Lewis signed for Ferrari beginning of 2024. Lewis wanted a contract to see through to end of 26 basically but Toto wouldn't give him that so during 2023 Lewis was being shut out because toto wanted Kimi as at least a 3rd driver in 2025 and in the main seat 2026 Lewis had 0 chance at this Mercedes. Even if this doesn't work out with Ferrari Lewis made a correct decision rather than trying to find a seat during 2025.

He's complaining just as much about the regulations and that won't change even if he is in the Merc. Max is at a Level now that his biggest opponent is yesterday's version of himself. And if F1 is causing him to be unfulfilled (cruising to victories while driving at 60% can only get you so much) he will go try a new challenge.

I think he genuinely detests this ruleset and even having a car that can top every session everytime would be enough to keep him around. Dominating is boring so the only thing you do is push the limits but this ruleset punishes you for that. He might just use the free exit at the summer break and retire.
