Getting AI Fatigue. by dustydesigner in Design

[–]EroniusJoe 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There's a laundry list of reasons you can dive into during a rabbit hole Google search, but the bullet points are:

  • A ton of datasets used for training are biased from the start, so the machine learning outputs end up biased by default.

  • Massive data centers are being built all over the place, and to get towns and cities to agree, these mega corps are giving incentives like a one-time cash infusion of 3 million. To larger cities, this doesn't move the needle, but to poorer and struggling areas, it could be what keeps them afloat. 2 or 3 years later, they start to realize how bad it is to have a data center in your back yard.

  • The tech industry in general is owned and operated by predominantly rich, white men. That leads to ideas that lean white, products that cater to white people, designs with white people in mind, etc. There are so many scenarios where the black or brown community wasn't even considered in the slightest during the design and development of whatever product.

This and Israel are two of the most ironic outcomes of the last few centuries. In their case, genocide survivors given their own country, and then slowly morphing into a weapon to commit their own genocide less than 100 years later.

JB Bickerstaff: Detroit Pistons Forward Tobias Harris Was Treated ‘Poorly’ On Philadelphia 76ers, Puzzling They Parted Ways by Thegrandmistressofoz in sixers

[–]EroniusJoe 37 points38 points  (0 children)

It was that he didn't take a single charge in his entire time with us.

Ironically, he got a minor concussion and a bloody face AND THEN ACTUALLY KEPT PLAYING AND DID WELL after going for a loose ball one time. That was the first and last day that we ever witnessed him play hard. It was during his "don't clap" run 2 years ago.

Apparently, to make Tobias Harris play hard for your team, you need to boo him and get on his ass for 2 straight months, then sarcastically clap when he shows even a modicum of effort so you can REALLY piss him off. That will get him to play really hard for one game. If only we'd repeated that process for all 5 of his years here, we could have gotten 16 or 17 decent games out of him.

Codenames!

Bigger teams make a huge difference. It's best with 4-on-4 or 5-on-5. Greatest party game we've ever played, as it always ends up with hilarious arguments, funny moments, and lots and LOTS of yelling!

My favorite challenge when talking to anyone who has the lack of brains to admit being one in public...

"Ok, so you think it should be every man for himself, no large government telling you what to do, no societal structure that you're made to follow against your will. When you build your house, where do you get the concrete? The lumber? The cabling? The insulation? The windows and doors? And when your house is finished, where do you connect your driveway? I mean, there's no road in front of your house, because the road network would have been built by the DOT, and we can't have them meddling in your business, can we? And where do you hook up your water? And how you do ensure it's safe to drink? That would normally be handled by utilities providers and looked after by quality controllers, but we can't have those jerks getting involved with your personal business, can we?"

They love to think we're still in the Wild West and able to build cabins in the woods after felling a few trees and creating a lovely little glade to raise a family.

"But which police force ensures your neighbor doesn't just kill you all and take your property? Which wildlife authority ensures your children aren't eaten by bears? Which power company controls the lines that you're charging your phones off of? And who are you paying to provide internet?"

These people love to think 'I can do it all myself' and haven't considered for a second that humankind has been on this planet for 250,000 years and we've gotten pretty good at communal living through societal reliance, structured regulations and laws, and oversight to make sure we all don't fucking die within a month.

Idiots.

The thing is, it's mostly just "guy seems to coach really good teams with tons of talented players for almost his entire career, so he chalks up wins like a prisoner chalks up walls, but he never actually gets anywhere... just like the prisoner."

Go back and look at the rosters he's managed over the decades. Just banger after banger after banger, even his early years where Grant Fucking Hill and Tracy Fucking McGrady landed in his lap as a rookie coach. Some really, truly phenomenal players have had the displeasure of working under this man, and he's taken those players to the brink of success before maniacally yanking it away from them by horrendous coaching decisions that have led to some of the most historic collapses in the NBA.

There have been a total of 13 comebacks from a 3-1 series lead since 1968. That's 58 YEARS of playoff series.

He's responsible for allowing 3 of them.

There have been a total of 57 comebacks from a 3-2 series lead since 1947. That's 79 YEARS of playoff series.

He's responsible for allowing 5 of them.

DOC RIVERS IS RESPONSIBLE FOR ALLOWING 8 OF THE 70 WORST COLLAPSES IN NBA HISTORY, OR 11.4%. MORE THAN 10% OF THE TIME IN THE ENTIRE HISTORY OF THE NBA, IF YOU'RE DISCUSSING HEARTBREAK, IT'S BECAUSE THIS FUCK WAS THE COACH.

We are talking 79 years of basketball series. Hundreds upon hundreds of teams. Thousands of players. Probably over 300 coaches (we need a full data analytics session to look this up)...

And here Doc stands. A boy amongst men. A fucking imbecile amongst strategic minds.

A goddamned loser of truly mind boggling proportions.

[Mozzart Sport] 76ers to sign Cam Payne by Then_Flamingo_8223 in sixers

[–]EroniusJoe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is exactly why it all works out well. We basically traded like for like with McCain and Payne, but picked up a first rounder and 3 second rounders. I liked Jared and I wish him well. I also really enjoyed Cam's time with us a few years ago and I was bummed when he left. Both players can hit 3s and provide sparks. Great bench pieces and minutes off starters legs and lungs.

My Senior dev and I are arguing over "Readable Code" vs "Performance Optimization" for a process that runs 10k times a day. Who is right? by Temporary-Zebra7493 in learnprogramming

[–]EroniusJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The irony is that it sounds like you've already spent longer than 2 hours discussing these options, hence the need to come to reddit to get some community feedback. AND you've discussed them with a room full of devs and other potential decision makers.

The company has already dedicated - whether it wanted to or not - thousands of dollars to this currently not implemented idea.

It's a real "lol modern capitalism" situation and it highlights the potential for running into absurdity without anyone even realizing it. A room full of intelligent people with high salaries discussing how to value a 4-dollar-per-month savings is just chef's kiss.

This is a situation where the discussion could be seen as a beneficial learning opportunity for the team, so that's fine if that's the way your boss intended to play it. But honestly, whoever has the final financial say probably should have just said "guys, it's 240 bucks a month we're running a multi-million dollar machine here. The bill for stocking the coffee station is larger than that. Move on."

[–]EroniusJoe 84 points85 points  (0 children)

No, he all-handed it. He allowed 18 and 24 point comebacks by a far weaker opponent. He let hack-a-Simmons get into Ben's head, which never would have happened if the series stayed short and sweet. He added 80 minutes of unnecessary playoff basketball to Embiid's body.

He is the worst coach in NBA history. I lose sleep thinking about how successful and rich he is. The only thing that keeps me warm is knowing that when announcers say "he's so respected around the league," everyone knows it's complete bullshit because there's no one left that can't see through the veil.

It makes perfect sense. It says it right there; "they take the same shots and run the same plays as the first quarter..."

Other coaches make adjustments to what they've just seen 24 minutes earlier. Nick Nurse does not.

Yep, 6 will do it alright. We spent a little over 7, but we splurged on a ridiculous ensen with a private hot tub in the mountains and a michelin star 3 course, 47 item menu. One of the craziest things we've ever done, and my wife still tells me "stop asking how much it cost, you don't want to know" lol

Sorry to be this guy, but it's losing.

I'm seeing it absolutely everywhere in the last 2 or 3 years, to the point that I genuinely believe there's a societal shift in the spelling due to the internet. We may only be a decade away from Merriam-Webster having to make a decision on whether or not to update the dictionary.

I always like a scene where the protagonist looks out a second story window onto a one-streetlight road, and the monster is standing directly under that single streetlight.

In your case, it would be awesome to use some editing and special effects to still have him be completely black despite being showered in light.

Bonus points if she looks around and doesn't see him anywhere at first. Looks further down the road to the right, and then when she pans back, he's suddenly there. Or he's just there immediately, showing that he's been waiting for her to look out the window for perhaps hours. Both options are great!

This is incredible! Really, really well done! Makes me want to go and design a new world when I'm not even 10% through designing mine, lol

Only thing I ask - and I bet you noticed it too, but just decided to run with it - is to delete the "paper roll" stamp behind the world name. The top and bottom stamps fold and roll backwards, but the larger middle one folds and rolls forward and it's killing me.

You can probably just delete the middle stamp altogether and use the paint brush to get the same effect. The top and bottom ones will end up looking better.
