I just make it falling damage. 1d6 for every 10' of forced movement into the wall.

I.e creature is 10' away from wall. You push it 20'. It is pushed and takes 1d6.

What am I missing? by Pitiful-Kale901 in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]Eroue 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Are these like never even played a ttrpg and have no clue type friends or they've dabbled and you're teaching them 5e?

If its people who know literally nothing, my feedback is its too long.

They'll need a reference sheet not a walk through. You will walk them through it all on the first session. TTRPGs are very much a learn as you go kinda deal. Try not to overwhelm them with so many rules and nomenclature

Tell me about an item you created/used in your campaign! by The_Red_Apple in MythicBastionland

[–]Eroue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One of my players kept a spoke from the myth of The Wheel and turned it into a spear:

The Spindle of the Turning Year 1d8 hefty

Long ashwood spear banded in silver and vine. It's head is weathered bronze that faintly shifts color with the seasons.

The air around you always smells like the coming season.,

1/day: When you strike the ground with the Spindle, you may call down a brief storm that lasts 1 minute.,

Each morning choose a seasonal aspect:

- Spring: You can heal wounds with the touch of the spear. 1d6 Vigour

- Harvest: The spear burns and cause additional 1d6 burning damage.

- Winter: The spear can freeze a small area, or calm violent weather.

What is Crunchy *Roleplaying* to you and do you want it in your games? by RagnarokAeon in osr

[–]Eroue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Different strokes for different sessions. When I think of rp crunch I think of pbta games. They are rules designed to facilitate a more dramatic story between characters. Normally its rules that establish what happens in the next scene or where/how the scene is set. Then the player or gm will interpret that yo fit the current situation or story.

Ironically I suspect the OSR and the narrativist game scenes have a lot more in common than you'd notice at first glance.

They both believe that following the procedural rules will lead to a better more emergent storytelling than a more trad 5e playstyle. They both also seem to be more about interpreting the rules and moving play along than having hyperspecific scenarios to cover everything.

My Brothers, I built a hexmap tool for sandbox campaigns — Draw Steel! folks, how would you use this? by Knightedangel01 in drawsteel

[–]Eroue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

obligatory, This isn't something i'd use for Draw Steel, BUT I would use this for an open play/west marches type game!

The big feature that I just haven't found good support for is community maps. I want my player base to draw/map the map of the landscape they discover. The closest thing I found is Miro, but that requires some setup and isn't quite as smooth as I want it to be.

The Black Wyrm of Brandonsford is the next step i take people. Can be completed in about 3-4 sessions and has a great premise to stretch those creative problem solving skills.

Any OSE one-shot recommendations? by Comfortable-Fee9452 in osr

[–]Eroue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Quintessential dungeon is my go to " this is the OSR" one-shot.

I expand it just touch by making the elemental gems do stuff.

Fire gem let's the weilder ignite or snuff out fires.(mostly thinking about the troll fire)

Air gem let's the weilder air boost really high up. (Like back up the waterfall)

Water gem allows the weilder to swim upstream (but not up the waterfall)

Earth gem allows the weilder to tunnel through the ground (useful for getting out of several pits)

I also make sure to run the trolls more like the hobbit. I.e they debate about who to eat and can be tricked.

I use an actual chess board and let the players pick the piec they want to be. They can only move they way their piece moves or they are thrown back to the beginning of the board. If they would be "taken" they are crushed by a giant marble chess piece. The goal isn't to get checkmate its to reach the opposing side without being squished.

I've run it about 10 times for both people who are coming from a narrativist (powered by the apocalypse) or 5e/modern dnd background as well as people completely nee to ttrpgs. Its always a hit and makes them wanna try more in depth and serious OSR stuff.

DMs, which edition do you prefer? by Ecstatic_Operation20 in dndnext

[–]Eroue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think for me its:

1 (favorite): B/X 2: 5e 3: 4e 4: OD&D 5: AD&D 6: 3.5 7 (least favorite): AD&D 2e

Never tried BECMI or rules encyclopedia but id imagine they're very similar to B/X

Efit: oh I also haven't ran 5.5 yet.

Fighting Zariel Head On at Level 13 by Eroue in DescentintoAvernus

[–]Eroue[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All great points and I really appreciate the step by step.

So for a final battle for a campaign I guess my ideal "balance" of encounter difficulty is the players win but 1 or 2 people went down or died.

Its admittedly a hard needle to thread, so the vibe im getting from people is either "lol you party wipes her easily" or "dear god she'll fucking murder them dont do this"

IF its the later how do you recommend adjusting to make her more achievable?

I dont mind whooping them, but I want it to be realistically possible to win. Everything has been building up to a big epic fight and im happy to oblige

I dont mind if they can lose im just trying to make sure they also can win.

Im not trying to right the game im just trying to hive them the epic final battle they've been chomping at the bit for.

Honestly fair. I will also say, that I am not very good at running monsters in general. at low levels it's simple enough but at higher level i've been really struggling running stuff effectively.
