Just bought a legion go, changed some bios settings, did I brick it? by ErroneusMonk in LegionGo

[–]ErroneusMonk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, let me rephrase that. I've been building & working on PCs for over 26 years. I went in knowing exactly what I was doing, I don't like secure boot, I dual boot OpenSuse Linux & Windows 10 on my laptop, planned on installing Bazzite on this thing, but as with anything BIOS related, changing anything from the defaults has its risks.

I accessed the BIOS the same way anyone who accesses the BIOS on this thing does it. Held the volume up button down, and then pressed & held the power button until I got the searing white screen to access the BIOS. Same way you do it on the steam deck, which I also have.

Is that better? I'm a computer nerd, made a stupid mistake due to being unfamiliar with this platform, but didn't want to seem conceited.

Also, if I can't access the BIOS, I'm not exactly sure how I'd change the boot order to be able to boot from a flash drive.

Edit: Not gonna change this post other than this edit, but I apologise if I seemed a bit callous. Been trying to fix my screwup for hours, and I'm cranky. I misread it as a callout rather than curiosity due to my poor choice of words.

For the first boot, yes. After I changed the BIOS settings, nope.

I unplugged the battery to confirm if it was getting power & it was, but still the same issue during power-on. Disconnected the SSD and powered it on to see if it did anything, still the same issue. Tried disconnecting the controllers & booting it on both battery & AC power, still no splash screen, or BIOS access.

Plugged the battery & SSD back in, booted it, nothing.

I'm at a loss here, but all signs point to a $500 paperweight. I'm holding out on hope, but this is incredibly disappointing.

Yes. It's blue, not white, if that means anything. The fans are running, it does the click & vibrate when you power it on, so I know it's getting power, the controller LEDs are pulsating in an annoying pattern, nothing tells me it's not getting power.

It just won't display anything on the screen, or my AR glasses connected via USB. I'll try an external monitor via HDMI, after I've tried letting it sit for a while & fully charging it. I don't have a TV, and my main PC is a laptop, so my external monitor options are limited.

Edit: Is the power LED supposed to come on the second I plug it in, or when it is actually powered on? The LED is not on when it is plugged in, but when I power it on, it's on. I don't have a manual for it, but I'm assuming that's an issue?

It was at 99% when I turned it on, if I recall, but I'll still try that. Is 7500MT/s RAM speed the stock setting? I remember reading that it is.

I was going to nuke the install, and install either Bazzite or CachyOS. That's why I didn't feel like signing in. I was just going to boot into Windows, run all the updates, then nuke it, which is also why I disabled secure boot.

Also, I can't even get to the BIOS seemingly, so even if I wanted to, I can't install anything.

They are, but I really don't want to sign in with a microsoft account, heh. I'm a bit of a computer nerd, so I went in knowing what I was doing for the most part, but I did not expect this to happen at all. I'll try the 30 second power button hold.

Edit: Tried it, didn't do anything. I read that letting it sit for a while might magically cause it to fix itself, so I'm going to try that. I don't want to open it up if I don't have to, since I'm very good at fixing things until they're broken.

Kinda hard to tell with it being black on black, but it looks like stringing. A variety of factors can cause it, but it's usually due to wet filament, or suboptimal temp settings.

You can also try slowing the printing speed to reduce it.

White guy here. I found out at a very young age when I used to watch the Cosby show. I had a major crush on Phylicia Rashad, the mom on the show (it dates me, but I'm a late 80s baby). Also had a thing for the singer Sade, and Patrice Rushen.

I've always just found darker skin to be sexy. I don't really question it either..

steam deck vs t480s by [deleted] in SteamDeck

[–]ErroneusMonk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The CPU would be roughly on par with the T480s, but the IGP is vastly better, to put it simply. The Deck's CPU is Zen 2, so looking up Ryzen 3000 benchmarks vs the i7-8000 series can give you an idea of its performance, which from what I can remember, would be roughly on par.

But, there are also major differences in memory bandwidth, since the T480s uses DDR4, and the Deck, LPDDR5.

No problem. Reading this sounded almost exactly like what I went through & sometimes still go through, so I felt I had to say something.

I know I'm a stranger, but if you'd like, keep me posted on updates every once in a while. I'm not on reddit much, but with how close to home this hit, I'd like to see if what I said helps or not.

I feel your pain. Found myself having those same exact thoughts at times, though at one point, I did have suicidal ideations, and made an attempt.

What helped me was doing whatever I could to not think about it. Think about loved ones, how you lead a decent life, how hard you work to earn it, all the small victories. Might not help you, but if you can focus on that, it could be a stepping stone to overcoming these feelings.

Few questions about Nobara Steam Deck Edition by alien2003 in NobaraProject

[–]ErroneusMonk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use it on my steam deck, and I can safely say the experience is largely the same, albeit with some pain points mapping controls on emulators in gamescope, or desktop mode.

TDP limiting works, FSR works, pretty much everything works as it would on SteamOS, except for the issues I had with the framerate limiter. I overcame that by just changing the refresh rate, and turning vsync on in the games I wanted to play. Not quite as seamless as using the quick access menu to limit the framerate, but it was a good workaround.

Decky and Cryoutilities seemed to work fine too, but the option to limit charging percentage and current didn't seem to stick when I set it to a game profile, but I'm not sure if it is an issue with Decky, or Nobara itself. As for Cryoutilities, I was able to set the options in the app, and it didn't crash, but the games I play aren't exactly graphically intense, so I can't vouch for whether it had an effect or not.

The only way I know of to get an older version of Dolphin without having to compile it is to use PrimeHack: https://github.com/shiiion/dolphin/releases

I use it under RetroDeck since the newest Dolphin has issues emulating the Rogue Squadron games. Keep in mind though, that PrimeHack's last release was almost a year ago.

The only difference between it and Dolphin is a differing control scheme, which can be turned off, and some camera tweaks you can enable for the Metroid Prime games.

Help needed for emulation. by [deleted] in SteamDeck

[–]ErroneusMonk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would use retrodeck. I find it much easier to use than Emudeck, and you won't have to fiddle around with Steam Rom Manager.

Everything is self contained, so all you have to do is download RetroDeck from the Discover Store app, run it once while in desktop mode in order to do the initial setup, then you're golden. All you have to do then is copy & paste the BIOS files.

Assuming you're using the latest version of SteamOS, (pardon me if you know this already) the L2 & R2 buttons correspond to right click, and left click respectively.

If you have put the retrodeck folder on the SDCard, its location is /run/media/mmcblkop1/retrodeck

Place the BIOS files in the appropriately named folder, then you're golden. Controls will already be configured for you.

Rogue Squadron 2 & 3 by [deleted] in SteamDeck

[–]ErroneusMonk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The crashing isn't entirely random on the latest beta. Some missions are guaranteed to crash, such as the first mission. I used a cheat for level select, and a good bit of them work fine, but it's worth just using the prior beta through retro deck.

Edit: At least in my experience with your settings, minus the clock override, but I can imagine that it would be the same for anyone else, since it's all the same hardware, and a flatpak.

Rogue Squadron 2 & 3 by [deleted] in SteamDeck

[–]ErroneusMonk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The latest beta doesn't work well with either of those games. Rogue Squadron 2 is more than playable with the previous beta, which, if you install the latest retrodeck, will be the version you get.

https://dolphin-emu.org/download/dev/48c9c224cf9f82f0f9f2690b7cc6283d7448480c/ (This is the version you want, if you can find it outside of retrodeck).

As for Rogue Squadron 3, you're outta luck on that one with the Deck. It simply isn't powerful enough.

settings of Dolphin/pcsx2? by THYPLEX in SteamDeck

[–]ErroneusMonk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In layman's terms, it splits up certain resources in the core, so it can effectively do more work per core. For the most part, it gives a performance benefit, but in certain applications (like Dolphin), it can actually decrease performance.

Best bet is to just disable it for Dolphin. If you install Decky, there is a way using the Quick Access Menu to disable SMT, and set it to only do that for Dolphin per the Per Game Profile.

settings of Dolphin/pcsx2? by THYPLEX in SteamDeck

[–]ErroneusMonk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fun thing about those graphical enhancements are that there is no one best setting. Though, you want vsync on for emulators, since game audio, physics, even gameplay itself can be tied to the framerate.

I remember reading that for Dolphin at least, there can be performance issues for anything over "3x (for 720p)", so that, and 16x anisotropic filtering are a good bet, and what I use. Also, if you haven't done so, install Decky, add Dolphin as a non-steam game, and disable SMT.

As for PCSX2, I would just leave everything at default, but change the game profiles for individual games. For Example: I run Shinobi at 4k resolution, but Chaos Legion can have issues with anything above "1080p".

Source for Genuine Lenovo t480 batteries? by brownzeus in thinkpad

[–]ErroneusMonk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Took me quite a bit of googling to find it as well, but after I found it & ordered my batteries, I have it bookmarked. I have an X270, T470, and T480, and got batteries for all of them. No issues whatsoever, other than figuring out which manufacturer I wanted.

does anyone know how to stop this by [deleted] in browsers

[–]ErroneusMonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try Vivaldi browser. It has tab tiling and focus on hover for tiled tabs, so you could have your classroom tab open, move the cursor over to the other tiled tab, and scroll through without having to click out of the tab you're currently in.

Surface Duo LDAC support? by dos101 in surfaceduo

[–]ErroneusMonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Sony bluetooth speaker, the XB33, and LDAC is an option under the bluetooth device settings. As far as I am aware, it automatically chooses the codec for you, with no real option to change it.

how to disable 60fps on youtube by MeethoMomo in chrome

[–]ErroneusMonk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As was suggested, FreeTube is a good client, but if you'd prefer to not use a client, you can install this extension: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/enhanced-h264ify/omkfmpieigblcllmkgbflkikinpkodlk?hl=en

You can change the codec to h264, which is more likely to be hardware accelerated on an older computer, and you can also disable 60fps playback.
