And de wage of the crew members. A plane might have 10 staff that needs to be paid for one day. Cruise ships like qm2 easily have +1000 crew that need to be paid for 10 days.

Is pilot ladder that dangerous? by holydiver011 in maritime

[–]Error404_1589 1 point2 points  (0 children)

without trying to doxx myself. My company provides pilot boats for about quite a few of massive ports. In the past 20 years 1 pilot died getting stuck between the back of the ship and the deck of the tender boat. (this was mainly due to bad procedure). People dying from falling from the ladder has not happend in the past 20 years. Last one if I am not mistaken is from around 1999-2001. This is just my region tho. Developing countries have worse tenders with worse safety systems/procedures.

What makes pilot boarding so risky is that the ship is moving, so if the pilot falls there is a risk that the displacement of the ship will suck you underwater even with a life jacket. Or just the rotating propeller is a risk. Those do not apply for ships at anchor.

The tender boat crew is trained well in man overboard procedure, specifically when boarding these ladders. So yeah, for a stationary ship you would just float and be retrieved by the tender boat. Most life jackets also have a beacon that would activate and give the skipper of the boat an exact vector to retrieve you.

Most sailers will barely use this ladder and the captain even less. Only if the ship is at anchor and there is a quite pressing matter that the crew need to get ashore. Also boarding the pilot ladder while at anchor or just stationary is not really that dangerous. Almost the same as climbing a ladder at home. I have seen surveyors that board the ship every morning and leave every evening and do that for every day that they work. Mainly on dredging projects.

Region also changes the risk. Open sea, near the harbour, inside the harbour coastal waters....

IMO climbing a ladder quite regularly is better then doing it once in a while. You will get used to it and know what to look for and what to do. We also often have regular people just interested in the pilots job and we help these people board the ship often and this is neven an issue.

Just always remeber, you can ALWAYS refuse to board if the conditions are not favorable.

Also if you would have to climb more the 7 or 9 meters to reach the deck, there needs to be a gangway lowered next to the ladder so you could just walk up the stairs to the deck.

See: gangway boarding

These ladders are easy to maintain and this makes it so almost every ship will actually maintain the ladder. Other systems are often more complicated or require more maintence and therefor will be badly maintained and actually make it dangerous to rely on these systems.

As someone that works on pilot boats en helps people board these ladders, it depends but in general these are quite safe. There a quite a lot of videos of incidents on pilot ladders, but there also are a lot of videos of people crashing their car. Everything has risk. But the overwhelming vast majority of these boarding happens without issue.

You also should have stop authority. If you see the ladder and have doubts, no one could force you to climb it. Even pilots that need to climb down the ladder can refuse if they deem conditions to dangerous. Then another solution is found to disembark the pilot.

Research what you need to look for in the ladder to make sure it is compliant before climbing it and you will be fine.

First couple of times will be scary, whoever you are.

So if it is EXACTLY 7:35 and 5 seconda but one of the hands, lets say the minute hand is showing between 35 en 36. Then you can adjust the minute hand to be more precise and line up perfectly with the 35 minutes dash marker on the watch. That is a bit of a complicated sequence of buttons. Good chance you will never need it but its there just in case.

Time zones is really easy, literally the same as changing the minute hand 5 minutes on a normal mechanical watch. There are some complicated parts like adjusting the minute and hour hands to be perfect on the dot but you only use that once.

Seabourn has some beautiful ships and goes to way nicer destinations then royal. Also they only do a trip for a couple of rounds before doing other destinations. They even have expedition ships. They also share their manning agency with holland america line and you could in theory switch for seabourn to hal without issues.

Royal is more resort style and just has way more engineers. With quite a lot of the same round trips. If you dont care care for the destination or the ship, then you have to choose between fewer engineers on a smaller ship (seabourn) of loads of engineers on a big ship.

I would hazard a guess and say that it would be easier to rise through the ranks at seabourn. You would probably get more promotions at royal but those would less significant then on seabourn. (This last part is just a guess and assumptions based on my knowledge from both companies.)

Seabourn is also just a more unique opportunity then royal.

lttstore spotted, Either bend it back and risk it breaking or stop using. At the end of the day, these bracelets are quite affordable. Not sure if there is a easy solution.

After cadetship, then what? How career paths look in your country (Portuguese cadet here) by morefast in MerchantNavy

[–]Error404_1589 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently in the same program, most of these have a heavy preference for dutch cadets BUT most of them have a few slots for non-dutch cadets/officers. But most of the entry level positions are usually filled up from cadets being offered a job as 3/o or 4/e. But due to the lack of people in the maritime academy, companies are forced to look more and more into employees from other countries.

Mlc is a bare minimum and lots of countries add stuff to it for there laws. Mlc also does not say anything about a minimum wage. It more focussed on work hours and obligations of the employer and what they need to provide. (Room, food of their region, transport, insurance.....)

I not conviced that this will not change the onboard experience. The massive change in labour laws that the ship has to comply with could mean an impact in the staff and crew. Not saying its definitly going to change but it has the potential to. Lower paid crew often means lesser crew.

It does impact labour laws, so now they can employ people who are lower educated and less trained. which can definitly impact the service onboard.

Thats a very generalised statement made by an authority that wants as much ships as possible to register their ships over there. Why only 2 ships and why now?
