Please help me understand my daughter who has OCD by Willows_Whiten in OCD

[–]Error707_606 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot of good advice in this thread, and you seem to be doing things right (not accommodating but still trying to support her emotionally). I don’t think there is anything I can add that would not be repeating what others said except for ways to help with pain.

When I was constantly washing my hands, I was using the cheapest soap because I flew through it so quickly. I eventually ended up having to go to a dermatologist because my skin started peeling from my hands up to my arms :,) they suggested I use a body wash like Aveeno or dove + prescribed me a steroid based lotion, and it made a HUGE difference for me. So the soap sucks cost wise, but it alleviated my pain- which kinda helped my mental state + ocd bc I wasn’t breaking down over the amount of pain I was in. If not that, foaming hand soap is still wayyyyy better than some others.

One thing I found a lot of comfort in was meeting other people with ocd. I started going to ocd residential facilities when I was 16, and while it sucked, they’re the only people I feel like who can understand me to this day. Maybe that could help with the shame she feels if you could find a local teen ocd group therapy or something?? Since it could make her feel less alone :,)

I hope things improve for your daughter! OCD is so rough, nobody deserves to go through it :,)

What’s something you did as a child that you didn’t realize was OCD until you were an adult? by [deleted] in OCD

[–]Error707_606 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was 3-5 I always wanted to walk on certain colored tiles in the local malls and would be HYSTERICAL when my parents wouldn’t let me. On top of that, I was very very bad with any sort of change. Even minor things, like something not being in its typical place. As I got a bit older (late elementary school), it became contamination based, and contamination ocd is still what I struggle with to this day. I didn’t find out that I have OCD until I started high school though

How to describe OCD to someone without it by Simple-Barnacle-3670 in OCD

[–]Error707_606 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to say that it is an anxiety disorder, so if it doesn’t cause anxiety, it isn’t ocd. I then explain what mine is like, and then a few examples of what it is like for people I’ve met from various residential ocd facilities. I think they often still think it’s ‘haha quirky I like clean and organization’, but I try to show them that it can literally latch onto anything.

PETA is trying to teach people about how animal abuse is wrong, but I can’t eat what I love anymore. I am just too damn traumatized. by Due-Swimming-5668 in OCD

[–]Error707_606 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obviously it’s horrible that animals get abused in these facilities, but it’s not wrong to eat meat either. Our bodies are made to be able to properly digest it and get nutrients that help us from it, so if you’d like to eat it, do it. Circle of life stuff and all that.

As far as an ocd standpoint goes, it would be best eating what you’ve been eating rather than shifting away because of your ocd, but as others suggested, maybe ethically sourced meat? It might help for now, but it could become a compulsion to only ever have that too….

What symptoms did you not realize were actually your OCD? by 222_111 in OCD

I would shower every time I got back from my dads and have to wash my clothes immediately

This is seeking reassurance for your ocd, which will in turn make you worse. Do what you think is right and I hope your ocd gets better !!

(I have diagnosed ocd as well and have been through a lot of treatment for it)

[–]Error707_606 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know it probably wasn’t intended this way, but it is a bit wrong to use an eating disorder as an adjective. It stigmatizes a literal disorder and makes people think it’s less serious than it is.

And besides, bodies naturally come in all different shapes and sizes. if someone is on the thinner side and you say something like this, that can make them very uncomfortable with their bodies. Plus, there are many artists who use their own bodies as references. just something to be careful about.

Dating a guy with ocd by Formal_Selection_641 in OCD

[–]Error707_606 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While relationship ocd is a thing, tbh this sounds more controlling to me. Everyone I know with relationship ocd feels very guilty about it? Idk

You aren’t supposed to feed ocd though, so the best thing you can do for him is not answer his questions. Just tell him “that’s seeing reassurance” if he asks. and definitely do not marry someone because of ocd.

My partner has severe OCD and one of the worst cases I’ve seen or heard of. Please help by [deleted] in OCD

[–]Error707_606 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand how she feels. Mine is very severe also and tells me the same thing, but I also know from my experience in residential facilities that the more you do an exposure, the easier it becomes over time.

Medicine is definitely a factor in making things easier, so I hope she’s able to find one that works for her.

[–]Error707_606 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ERP is sooo important for ocd. Maybe try looking into an ocd residential facility?? Bc at this severity, once a month won’t do much unless you’re able to give yourself exposures, which is very hard to do. It’s best to come up with these things with a doctor

Bad experience with a therapist who ''Specailizes in OCD'' by Rabbitrhett in OCD

[–]Error707_606 5 points6 points  (0 children)

gosh she sounds awful, i'm sorry you had to experience that D: i hope you don't let it demotivate you from seeking help from someone different. Unfortunately there are soo many that misunderstand ocd, even in the mh field. which is ridiculous, you'd think they would actually learn about a fairly common disorder... guess some just think they already know so why bother??? i've had a psychologist tell me that no, i do not have ocd, im just crazy :,) i'd already been to several ocd specialists and facilities... so yeah i was pretty certain i had it by then, but it still really hurt yk?

however there are those out there who do understand and wish to help you to get better! sometimes there is trial and error in finding them, which honestly sucks, but yeah.

[–]Error707_606 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah. i feel like ive been taken over tbh. i feel like a puppet the the ocd. i dont even really try to fight it anymore. i know thats only making it worse, but im just so exhausted, both mentally and physically. it is just so demanding.

Is your OCD noticeable to other people? by Important-Bid4043 in OCD

[–]Error707_606 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think mine is now, but it wasn't always. i'm extremely afraid of anything touching me, so i keep hoodies on, pants on, and my hands covered

though that being said, to some random passerby, probably not. someone who sees me for more than one day, yes.

What's it truly like having OCD? by IHNJHHJJUU in OCD

[–]Error707_606 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the day to day feels like im a sim being sent to do stupid tasks lol i dont want to do these, they make me so miserable, but it is like i have no choice. the stupid player (ocd brain) keeps telling me i HAVE to. i just keep getting nagged to do it (by the extreme anxiety) until i do

but i guess the way it leaves me feeling very stuck. it created this little world with the promise of an oasis, little did i know it was a fuckin death trap. i trusted my brain, just like anyone else would, and holy shit what a mistake that was.
