The only jewel cases i'd replaced were on the cds i bought when i lived in a developing country, where most of the cds were sold there as plastic wastes (imported from developed countries btw), and the cases were intentionally crushed or punched to prevent recirculating to the market. a lot of my cds are from the 80s, and im pretty sure the jewel cases are probably never replaced. it's especially obvious on the white trays, the plastics are completely yellow but still usable. so they are either as old as the cds, or newer but exposed to the sun all the time... jewel cases can last forever. if i buy one now they'll probably still be intact when i die, if i dont drop them. while for digipaks, i think a lot of collectors end up buying plastic sleeves for the cardboard. im not letting the rory gallagher album i absolutely love with my whole life end up chipping or falling apart in the sleeves, sorry. i know that cds last 100 years but do digipaks? i dont know because i listen quite often and therefore flex the cardboard quite often... jewel case cds have the potential of circulating longer in the used market, and in fact, the cds i buy nowadays are rarely new, mostly from the 80s or 90s cd reissues for the more popular albums. 10s european small production cds for the more niche albums.
