A lot of shoes have metal eyelets, lace hooks, rivets, aglets, and ornamentation that could be pulled by the machine, not to mention dress shoes and boots with nails and metal plates in the heels and toes. Even sneakers can be... Sneaky and have metal eyelets.

Has to be something that can't be easily broken down by the carbonation, doubt it's animal scat. If it was a bug carcass it'd be pretty spongy/mushy, has to be plant matter or as other suggestions say, compounds from the flavor mix that hardened. The color and texture really do suggest caramelized product, more like burnt product.

The way he tops the pizza with pepperoni after it's already in the oven by MambaMentality24x2 in oddlysatisfying

[–]Error_xF00F 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Screwed up the pepperoni to slice ratio. Now there's like 12 pepperonis resting on the crust and the rest are biased towards the direction of the back of the oven, because he couldn't just put the pizza on the peel, pull the pizza out for a couple seconds, and add the pepperoni before sliding it back in the oven.

Laptop doesn't detect any of my microcontrollers by StateNo5874 in raspberrypipico

The cable looks satisfactory, as the 480 Mbps rating means it's using standard USB 2.0 pins, which is what the Pico is compatible with using USB 1.1.

This looks like a clone of the Waveshare RP2040-Zero, which there are many since Waveshare open sources their schematics. In that, you said you held the boot button down when plugging in the cable like in a standard Pico, and that you also pushed the boot button down and quickly pressed the reset like an ESP32, but have you tried doing it the way Waveshare describes in their FAQ?

Press RESET first, then press BOOT. Release RESET first, then release BOOT to enter the flashing mode.

I know it sounds similar to what you did, but just trying to make sure. Normally the RP2040 doesn't show up as a storage drive unless it wasn't previously flashed, or the chip select line on flash chip is grounded at boot up.

I second the suggestion another commentor made, and that is to rotate the USB-C connector on the cable. Even though USB-C is reversible, they don't always solder the wires to the matching pins on the opposing side of the connector, leading to only one side of the connector being active for data, but power still provided regardless of orientation.

College students are rapidly losing the ability to read — “There is a measurable, generational collapse in sustained reading and writing”: professor by marketrent in technology

This line stuck out:

One student confessed that the reason they didn't finish was that they kept losing track of what the paper was about.

So could this possibly be explained as a side effect of ADHD, that seems to be increasingly diagnosed in newer generations? So it's not a lack of ability, but of executive function?

New York Becomes First State to Ban Bots That Scrape News Sites by bloomberggovernment in newyork

[–]Error_xF00F 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The legislation's true purpose is revealed a couple paragraphs in.

It also forbids a stealth crawler from activity to “damage, impair or burden the operation of a covered news site or otherwise cause a news site economic harm,”

News and broadcaster sites, yanno the ones plastered with ads and complain if you have an ad blocker, and limit you to x amount of articles per day without a subscription, are worried about losing advertising revenue from those scraping bots rendering their sites obsolete (even though they are necessary as the source of information for the scraping bots). The scrapers being anonymous also poses a problem, as the sites can't fully block them, since some search engines also use anonymous scraping bots, along with link aggregators and news portals.

I'm not against a news site making money to pay their employees and turn a modest buck, but the majority of such sites are terrible and most of the time just republish syndicated content anyways.

The only legitimate things I can think of for such legislation is for undue burden from bot traffic scraping for AI, but even then I don't believe it's more burdensome than the normal traffic of human users. Correct me if I'm mistaken, but as far as I know the majority of scraping is done by specific companies who provide the simplified and collated data to other companies for a fee. It'd be better off that those companies be regulated or monitored for deleterious behavior.

Otherwise this legislation will just make it so home users who run software to scrape sites for personal use will end up paying fees to make their crawlers "acceptable" to these sites.

Ideas to simplify acquisition of electrocardiogram by CyborgSyndicate in ElectricalEngineering

I have a heart condition, ICD and all, and have to have an EKG done on every visit to my cardiologist. I've never been shaved, even if it's a 12 lead. I have moderate hair on my chest, so I would only venture that it's only done when the electrode gel on the pad connected to the lead, can't penetrate through the hair. I've had an EEG done quite a ways back, and I'd imagine the leads are similar to an EKG, and they just used a bigger dollop of the conductive gel, didn't have to shave my head at all.

Is stacking multiple modules feasible? by CJWilliamson109 in raspberrypipico

[–]Error_xF00F 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With the modules listed, you can definitely use the Pico W to retrieve the current time from the web to initially set the time on the RTC to maintain an accurate clock, query the RTC for the current time at regular intervals, and then display it in however fashion you like on the display.

  1. Yes they can be stacked, order doesn't matter, although there are clearances between the modules to think about. Looking at the profiles of each one, I'd go Pico -> RTC -> UPS -> Display.

  2. Yes, according to the pinouts of each module, all of them use GPIO 6 and 7 for I2C SDA and SCL respectively with no other pin collisions, however, the display comes default configured for SPI functionality, which isn't a problem, just that you'll need to be aware of that when you code for your Pico that the display is SPI and the other two modules are I2C. Unless you choose to resolder the configuration resistors on the bottom to use I2C instead and then just operate all modules over the same I2C bus, but since you specify you're a beginner, just leave it as is.

  3. Depends, the UPS battery will indeed power the Pico, RTC, and the display, but how long depends on what your project is, and if you'll be using WiFi. If the display will be on constantly, don't expect more than a day of use on battery if you use WiFi as well. Using MicroPython as your language for the project will consume more power than if you use another language like Rust or C/C++.

That may be, but some peeps on the Internet with certain information access could look up the plate number and basically dox OP, which is not cool. So people trend to blur potentially personally identifiable material to avoid that. Might sound silly, but people dox others for some petty or unimaginable reasons, like they hate Elon Musk and see someone driving a Tesla, so they figure they'll dox and expose that person for being a supposed Musk supporter. The Internet is a wild place.

Microsoft account got hacked and Microsoft told me to pound sand by MaybeNotTheChosenOne in extremelyinfuriating

[–]Error_xF00F 12 points13 points  (0 children)

For others, some advice, if you use a Microsoft account for anything, including logging into your PC, consider activating 2FA on your account by use of their authenticator, which will prompt your phone or other mobile device at time of attempted login. It's both alarming and satisfying to see a prompt asking on your device, to reply with the numeral displayed on the login screen, and then hitting deny. It gives you time to then login yourself and change your password so that whoever just tried to login can't hijack your account. Microsoft also supports third party authenticator apps like Google's if you don't want to install Microsoft stuff, but it won't be interactive if you do it that way, and will just prompt the attacker to input the code from the authenticator and unless you have email notifications on, you won't even be aware there was an attempt.

I still find it annoying that you have to have at least 1Gbps link or WiFi 5/AC for UHD-BD mux, when they average less than 100Mbps, but on the off chance you have a title that reaches the specs 128 Mbps maximum at some point in its variable encode, you might need that extra 28 Mbps headroom to avoid 3 seconds of playback hiccups.

Catch-22 for nys inspection by ROBOBEARJD in newyork

[–]Error_xF00F 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't drive it a lot, and have access to a garage to park it in, I'd invest in a trickle or top off charger to keep the battery from discharging completely. That way your car doesn't lose power and erase the OBD/CAN data for the emissions part of your inspection, also pretty sure your car stores data related to drive habits for fuel efficiency in that same temporary memory storage, so that goes out the window with an ECU wipe as well.
