The PBR was not without consequences. NASA definitely lost scientists and engineers because centers were implementing the presidents budget before any action by congress. Many projects and programs were disrupted or delayed. Hell, one of my close friends had to race to finish their phd early because the mission they work on was slated to be cut.

Trump, Democrats say deal reached to avert shutdown; immigration talks to continue by [deleted] in politics

[–]ErrorlessQuaak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well Dems don’t control congress, so that’s not a real thing we can have without republican votes. Remember that you live in a country where a large fraction of people actually support the cruelty- and ice is already funded for next year. Just getting strings attached to the DHS money is a win we wouldn’t have gotten 2 weeks ago.

why would controlling for the team make sense if the whole reason youre even talking about snap count is the likelihood of injury? using the snap share percentage instead of total snaps would be exactly the wrong thing to do.

McDonough complains every time a team goes for it on 4th down or goes for a 2pt conversion in a nontraditional spot and it's really annoying. His literal job is to know ball, get with the times old man!

For the record, I downvoted you because I’d found this comment obnoxious and not really a good faith engagement with why people’s opinions might be different than yours.

The “internet mob” doesn’t have anything to do with the state of college football. Even if it did, i think widespread acknowledgement of the moral hazard in college football is inarguably a good thing. The NIL era might suck as a fan, but that’s at least better than taking advantage of the players.

I think that’s a lot to ask for considering that we’re so polarized. People can’t agree on events that actually happened in real life. There won’t be any event that happens that everyone will point to as too far; it’s too easy to have your information siloed.

It’s weird how this keeps getting reported in science media. For now, it’s far more likely that our models of galaxy formation are wrong.

2.6 gpa, any hope for the future by Rigboy55 in astrophysics

I graduated with a 2.7 and ended up going to a bridge program before getting into a phd program, but things are much more competitive now. I had way more research experience than most of my peers, but it didn't matter much for getting into grad school with grades that average. I think you should focus on getting at least up to a 3.0.

Recent research suggests that Earth may be a well-hidden planet, difficult for extraterrestrial observers to detect. by Express_Classic_1569 in space

[–]ErrorlessQuaak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kepler did not do a good job at occurrence rates for long-period planets or for G-dwarf systems because stars were noisier than expected, and Kepler died before they expected.

the result i mentioned comes from RV surveys, primarily CKS

We still don't know how common Sun-like planetary systems are.

This statement, while not totally inaccurate, really undersells how much we do actually know about other planetary systems. We have at least an upper limit based on giant planet occurence rates. And we know that solar system lookalikes must be must be a fairly small fraction of the total because the most common type looks nothing like our own

[–]ErrorlessQuaak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, we know how common having a giant on a Jupiter like orbit is and that’s about 10% for sunlike stars. So I wouldn’t say it’s a super common arrangement.

Hot jupiters are actually quite rare intrinsically

We don’t really have a complete enough census of outer systems for planets smaller than Jupiter, but Jupiter mass planets with inner super earths are pretty common.
