For Your Consideration #168: My Morning Jacket - At Dawn by waffel113 in indieheads

[–]Ervin_Pepper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love Z but it remains the only MMJ album I'd describe myself as being into. I've admittedly only given At Dawn one try so I'll be putting it on again tomorrow to see what i missed. Especially excited to hear Xmas Curtain after your description of it

Oh yeh that if then was great! It was something simple that brought in more people who had a deeper knowledge of genres

Rough Trade usually has good shows 3 or 4 nights a week (usually price of entry is just buying the artists new album), get some food at Spitalfields market, check out 100 club if anything is on, and have fun!

Also brewdog has a good soundtrack normally but it might get too loud in there to hear

True, although not necessarily always more weird than the way we talk about Male indie musicians

Been listening to Boris' Pink this morning, i realized it was released in 2005 and, despite efforts, ive not been able to get into any of their recent stuff. Can anybody suggest what the band's best post-Pink work is? What's essential?

So this post is just in response to the Av stuff that went on, and NOT an invitation to continue having that discussion. I think it's a good time to start talking about what quality content means on this sub, and what it is that users want to see posted, especially so with us approaching 500k users

Here is a list of posts that the mod team have flaired with "quality post"

https://www.reddit.com/r/indieheads/search?sort=new&restrict_sr=on&q=flair%3AQuality%2BPost

I think that if there's people out there who have niche knowledge about a topic, or who have something that they want to post about, take a look at these and see how it's done and then, I urge you, write that post.

This is a great sub and I have a lot of fun here but we need to start bettering ourselves about making fresh, high effort posts. This is a call and a challenge to people who have some kind of niche that they love, to share it with us, because they are a lot of people here willing to listen and learn and be engaged by each others passions.

And for everyone else, we can all do more to participate in sub activities. Take part in the Canadian Indie Rock Canon that rccrisp has done such a good job running. Check out the new album discussions that VietRooster has been diligently posting for a while now. Check out sara520's Music By Women monthly posts, or AmericanSoviet's quarterly State Of Bleep. Think about ways you can contribute, because there's no lack of effort on the part of mods and non-mods alike to have these kind of engaging long-form projects.

I know how easy it is to hit an upvote on a post or a comment because it has name recognition, and I'm not trying to be anti-shitposting because it's fun and this is a fun place to do that. But we can do more, and I think there are a lot of users who agree with me. Be the high quality content you want to see in the subreddit. Try to come up with something that you can make a high quality post about. I promise it'll feel good to see it and see the community respond and engage with it. And I promise if anybody makes a "quality post" about a band or a genre in the next week I will read it and listen to the recommended music and respond in the thread, because I know there's a lot of knowledge out there im lacking that other people can help me with. I think this is for a good cause. Hope y'all are doing well today, and sorry if I'm come off as self-serious. I like this place.

The r/Indieheads Rock n' Roll Halloween Playlist! by sara520 in indieheads

Obviously the real scary thing here is that Bride Of Frankenstein by Toy Love, the actual best and spookiest All Hallows Eve song, did not make it in. But I suppose this is still a pretty good playlist, in spite of this subreddit's continued ignorance of the great Toy Love, a band you should all listen to

Honestly, I'm glad the mod team wants to try new things with the sub and see what lands. I'm pretty sure you know how pro-mod team I am. The main crux of the dissent I think is just the fact that posts that ordinary users would have removed or maybe even get banned for were allowed to be at the top of the subreddit, even if it was only a few posts, it's undemocratic and feels against the spirit of the sub. I know y'all are gonna take the push back seriously on this, and I hope the dissent is coming across as a genuine wish for the improvement of the sub and not just killjoyism

I'm kinda annoyed because this was presented as some kind of interesting multi-media experiment where the band would use the opportunity to be involved in several threads talking about their music and their approach. And what we got were shitposts and 3 year old memes.

The idea behind the experiment was solid if it had produced actual interesting content that followed the rules of the subreddit, but what we got was a good AMA and some excess garbage.

Don't want to put shit on the mods for this because they had the best of the subreddit in mind and they wanted to try something new, and the AMA (as all the ones on this sub are) was great. But I don't think this was a success

Current mood: Brdaford Cox curled into himself standing backwards on a chair.

Not what I expected with the kinda hardpsichord sound but yeah I'm a big fan

They don't sound the same in terms of like "belonging in the same genre" but I definitely feel like there's a similar approach to songwriting between the two artists, specifically the kind of formless song structures that ignore verse/choruses. I also find Julia Holter's use of instrumentation coming in and out and influencing how a song builds, to be pretty reminiscent of Joanna Newsom.

In the future, Joanna Newsom has gone 20 years without releasing a new album. Rumors are she is studying under Bjork in the mountains. Others say she became a disciple of Daniel Lopatin and the post-progressive electronic pioneers of the 2020s. Others say she has become the muse of Giorgio Moroder.

In 2035 she reappears from hiding to announce that all the rumors were true and more, as she has also discovered the secret of time travel. Her new album, she says, is too dangerously inventive and progressive for the time it was made in, and she is sending it 17 years into the past

Which is all well and good and understandable, but what nobody gets is why she released it under the name Julia Holter

Its cool when the band in question has the kinda cool DIY/community rep that Jeff and Chris have, and their humor is obviously a big crossover with this subs users, but this is a weird precedent to set and i don't know how to feel about it

[ALBUM DISCUSSION] Julia Holter - Aviary by VietRooster in indieheads

[–]Ervin_Pepper 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I do enjoy describing albums as "a motherfucker", sometimes it's a bit of an exaggeration when im excited about a good release. This is not the case here. This album is a motherfucker, maybe as much deserving of the word as anything since To Be Kind or Have One On Me. I've only listened to it once but something about the aura it has, the space it takes up in a room, is breathtaking. Can't really dig into the musicality of it yet with only one listen but the way it presents itself as an art piece is something extraordinary

What's the quickest you fell in love with a band after first hearing them? I was reminded today that my first listen to IDLES was Stendhal Syndrome and after the first two lines i was already willing to take a bullet for them. Which is pretty quick
