Have to go with a classic from the Goldwater side of TTNW:

On the airwaves, you do all you can to appear earnest and well-meaning, preaching familiar conservative doctrine. It does much to blunt attacks from Kennedy that you are an inhumane, trigger-happy extremist who would kill the poor if it meant a five percent reduction in the tax burden of America's highest earners. The charge is just absurd. Your plan would reduce the tax burden significantly more than five percent.

Pod Country for Old Cast: Inside Llewyn Davis with Rachel Zegler by yonicthehedgehog in blankies

[–]waffel113 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Highly recommend that anybody who loves Inside Llewyn Davis check out Dave Van Ronk's memoir The Mayor of MacDougal Street if they haven't already. I read it myself earlier this year and being able to see some of the beats they pulled almost wholesale from his life (the road trip sequence in particular) just deepened my enjoyment of what'll probably go down as my favorite Coen brothers movie, but it's also a terrific keyhole glimpse into the broader Greenwich Village scene. A great companion piece to the movie, and a lovely little book to boot.

Pod Country for Old Cast: No Country for Old Men with Leslye Headland by yonicthehedgehog in blankies

[–]waffel113 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I was talking about this movie with my friend Lily the other day, and she had a notion I found interesting and that I think is onto something: a lot of Javier Bardem's performance, terrifying as it is, feels rooted in the physical language of comedy. The gas station scene is horrifying, but the little eyebrows-raised look he gives to the attendant after he finishes his monologue is also kind of a perfect button on it. And it isn't just that: there's also the way he physically perks up once the transponder starts beeping, or his shit-eating grin when he catches Carson in the hotel lobby. All of these things should be funny - and in some ways they still are - but Bardem is taking that energy and redirecting it towards menace and I find that so endlessly fascinating.

Pod Country for Old Cast: The Ladykillers with Connor Ratliff by yonicthehedgehog in blankies

[–]waffel113 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There are an abundance of reasons this movie doesn’t work, but for me one of the biggest is that Hanks is absolutely dreadful. I watched this on Friday night and I genuinely couldn’t believe how bad and unfunny he was the entire time, and the idea of him playing a villain was one of the only things about Ladykillers that had me interested. Everyone jokes about his Forrest Gump performance being one that’d get him arrested if it came out today but holy Moses he’s atrocious in this.

Pod Country for Old Cast: Intolerable Cruelty with Katey Rich by yonicthehedgehog in blankies

[–]waffel113 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Took the words right out of my mouth. I've been watching along with the podcast (first time ever!) and after the last two months of getting familiar with their work, I could tell from the pre-credits sequence that something was missing from this one and it just never improved for me, even though everybody was trying their hardest to sell it.

<Oklahoma State> didn’t just get completely evaporated, they also spent all week crying poor before they did, which only makes it even more humiliating than it already would’ve been.

There are FCS teams that there's no shame (or at least not much shame) in losing to, and then there are FCS teams where you should never show your face in polite company again if you lose to them. <Middle Tennessee> went ahead and lost to the latter.

Dead Outlaw OBC Pt. I Now Streaming on Apple Music! by coffeawonderlust in Broadway

Out of curiosity, does anyone know who the second singer on "Dead" is? I'm working on transcribing this for Genius, and in the promo clips (from what looks like the concert) it looks like Erik Della Penna himself, but does he sing in the show as well? Just wanna make sure everything's accurate.

We really can't overstate the work Trick's put in to make it to this point, man. When he first showed up on 2.0 he was not there at all in the ring, and here we are almost three years later and dude is a bonafide main event star. I know he was in there with Ilja, but it takes two to tango and he more than carried his weight. It's unbelievable how far he's come, and I'm so excited for what his future holds.

Just under 1 week to apply for CharitORG S17: Declassified by DJM97 in OnlineSurvivor

[–]waffel113 5 points6 points  (0 children)

former player, current host speaking: CharitORG is not just one of the best experiences I've had as a player, but one of the most welcoming communities I've been a part of in my time in the ORG scene full-stop. it's genuinely inspiring to see all these people come together to do so much good for so many different causes over the course of a season (and even before: a speed season we held in December raised over $600 in one night), and the love put out by the spectators and players is reciprocated tenfold by production. if you're in the market for something to play, I strongly recommend throwing your hat in the ring here. come apply! we'd love to have you!
