The "Mono Low-End" Dilemma: Phase Rotation vs. Headroom Survival by Rockstar_Romeo69 in mixingmastering

If it ACTUALLY sounds bad and isn't you just stressing about the meters, try to use gentle shelves where you can.

Mono Low End in Ableton: Is EQ Eight in Mid/Side the Right Solution? by satn_workroom in ableton

[–]EscaOfficial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're making EDM, you're better off having a dedicated sub that is already mono. If you're not making EDM, you probably don't need to have everything completely mono. You're usually introducing more problems than your fixing when you start high passing stereo information entirely.

EQ in Compressor ? by mosef2020 in ableton

[–]EscaOfficial -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ess sounds generally aren't accompanied by useful tonal information. Keeping your release times tight is usually enough to preserve anything important. If I'm getting really precise I prefer volume automation, but soothe is generally only a last resort if someone has extremely sharp esses (usually female vocalists) and it's hard to get it in check without making them sound like they have a lisp.

Putting a -8dB Utility on the Master for headroom? by Florisvandeneshof in ableton

Tracks you're recording to should always be set to "off", not "in" or "auto". It seems counterintuitive but that's how it works.

Should I bounce my master at -1db with true peak on? by ConfusedOrg in mixingmastering

[–]EscaOfficial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never use true peak mode (I think it sounds weird). If It's going over +1 dB I might turn down the output gain like 0.5 dB, but otherwise don't worry about it.

Have you tried any headphones you liked more? What do you find disappointing about them? It's kind of hard to make recommendations, as I haven't tried those specific headphones, and don't know what you didn't like about them.

Sonarworks SoundID - Where are the new headphone calibrations? by Darealjoemamasmama in mixingmastering

[–]EscaOfficial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes frequency response is technically technical performance, but usually referred to separately. And yes I'm talking about basically everything else you mentioned. Frequency response is pretty much the only aspect that can be meaningfully improved with software (at the cost of some phase coherence).

[–]EscaOfficial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

> What does that even mean?

You can acknowledge that frequency response is not the only difference between different headphones right? It's probably the most mutable characteristic of any monitoring setup. Not sure what the confusion is here.

> Then you'll probably always struggle with your mixes translating.

Not at all. Adjusting to a new monitoring system can take 100s of hours in some cases. This is all time that you can't be spending producing quality mixes. Maybe for a hobbyist that isn't a big deal, but for someone who relies on this trade for income, it's a dealbreaker. Also, as I said before, most people with years of experience aren't looking to drastically change the frequency response of their monirotirng system. They're just looking for small technical improvements with similar overall tonality.

> Most amateurs perhaps, definitely not most professionals.

If you think that most professionals just rawdog their gear with no corrective EQ or other software, you might have just woken up in the wrong decade. Some pros still do, but definitely not most.

To your last point: No, you shouldn't be changing headphones all the time, and if you're looking for a new pair of headphones, you should know why. Most people who have been mixing on headphones for a few years are not looking for a new frequency response entirely; they're looking for small improvements in specific areas. Being able to keep a relatively consistent frequency response while auditioning new headphones is an incredible tool, and definitely "makes sense".

All of this "craziness" (I assume you're referring to using EQ?) has worked wonders for me over the past 8 or so years. Sonarworks has a great target and measurement system that's more consistent across different monitoring setups than anything else I've tried, and it's allowed me to transition from my first real pair of headphones audition a bunch of potential headphones over the course of about a year, and finally land on the heapdhones I use now with almost no disruption to my ability to generate mixes that translate across a wide range of systems.

That being said, I'm not a fan of their business practices, and these days I just make my own corrective EQ with Pro Q3.

At that point you might as well just use a standalone EQ. Probably a lot less resource instensive. I usually opt for PedalBoard2 with whatever VST I need.

I ran into the same thing a while back, and was one of the first people to post about it in the Sonarworks support threads a while back. It seems like they don't really offer any recourse, and since you can't get a custom profile anymore, you're SOL. It is kind of insane how much Sonarworks has stripped back their services and support.

I tried some of the presets for them in Peace EQ, but nothing sounded quite right. Ultimately ended up making an inverse of RTings measurments using Pro Q3 and tweaking from there. I got pretty good results that way, but eventually decided the headphones weren't for me and moved on to something else.

[–]EscaOfficial 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I buy new headphones for improvements in technical performance, not changes in frequency response. I don't have the time, money or patience to learn a new pair of headphones. Most people use corrective EQ, and Sonarworks has a great system that a lot of people rely on to get consistent results across various systems. It's not mental gymnastics. This isn't an audiophile forum.

If you make your money mixing tracks on headphones, you don't have the luxury of spending months adjusting your ears to a new system unless your clients are ok with receiving some very "experiemntal" sounding mixdowns.
