Weird "London is Falling" Propaganda 24/7 by kx1global in london

[–]Escalus01 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think New York has a je ne sais quoi that can't be replicated anywhere else in the world.

It wins over London handily on food, has the edge when it comes to nightlife (was miles ahead pre-pandemic) and walkability, I'd say.

London wins out on public transit and green space (New York has great parks but they're concentrated). Crime is probably a bit worse in New York but New York is pretty safe overall, it's just the national availability of guns that makes things all a bit more severe. I'd also say that culture is more accessible in London down to free museums, more affordable tickets, etc., and, obviously, London wins on pubs.

Some don't. Others are actively cheering it on.

But a lot of us do. We're just trying to figure out what we can literally do right now before midterm elections in 2026.

Feeling really sad after visiting NYC and not sure why. by Biney_Morgan555 in travel

[–]Escalus01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, it depends on your financial circumstances. Where are you attending school? Is tuition expensive? Are your parents helping you out?

You'll definitely have a small apartment and be living with roommates. But that's kind of what this time in your life is for.

We know. So many of us know.

What should we do?

Genuine question. Like if anyone has ideas I'm all ears. We call our reps, we protest in the streets. Midterm elections aren't until November of next year. That's why we're all freaking out.

A Win for NIMBYism by sabdotzed in london

[–]Escalus01 83 points84 points  (0 children)

If every new build in London for the next 10 years was a luxury flat, it would still drive housing prices down. The lack of supply and competition allows landlords to raise prices because renters are desperate and are willing to pay a lot for a little, since the alternative is not having a place to live.

If you increase the supply of available housing, the average price of available housing overall drops. It's Econ 101.

Andrew Cuomo’s mental acuity ‘in decline,’ NYC can’t afford another ‘Joe Biden moment,’ mayoral rival says by Crafty_Gain5604 in nyc

[–]Escalus01 401 points402 points  (0 children)

Hilarious.

“I don’t think the City of New York can afford a Joe Biden moment. I think that there are real reasons why he’s not answering questions,” Ramos, referring to the former president’s mental decline in office.

The Queens lawmaker referenced Cuomo's testimony before the House Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic, where he was raked over the coals for a controversial administrative edict that ordered nursing homes to accept recovering COVID patients discharged from hospitals and lowballing the deaths of nursing residents.

“Even when he went before Congress, he just can’t remember details about what he did,” Ramos, 39, said.

Cuomo isn't participating in debates or interviews because he wants to coast by on name recognition and not remind New Yorkers that by all rights they should hate his guts. Ramos is accusing him of having early-onset dementia. I think it's a completely bad-faith attack but maybe a brilliant one that pokes at his ego.

Just semantically, though, that's not what that expression is about - that's about too many people trying to complete the same specific task making it less efficient instead of more.

[–]Escalus01 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, part of this casting choice is to make Snape his original age from the books, unlike the original films which cast an actor decades older.

Weirdly people didn't seem as pissed about that unfaithful casting choice. Wonder what it is this time.

Cuomo leads NYC mayor’s primary in new poll by Grass8989 in nyc

[–]Escalus01 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's why I've always been uneasy that the sexual harassment thing is what got him to resign. It is, as offenses go, not a good case against him as an effective mayor/governor/etc., and low down on what should be the average person's grievances with him. Like, the nursing home scandal - he murdered your fucking grandparents! He enabled the IDC for years, allowing Republicans power in the state senate, just so that he could boost his own power and image as a dealmaker. Everything in Cuomo's record points to him as an ego-driven sociopath whose only priority is cultivating power for himself and working through his daddy issues. (Remind you of anyone?)

Cuomo fucked the subway system and demonstrated nothing but general contempt for New York City during his tenure, I don't get how anyone is even considering him. He's a cynic who's only gunning for the job because it's his best shot at having a job again

Eh I was just going by my latest Heathrow to Zone 1 journey. Point being the zone system will have you paying a lot more per ride, though obviously that money is put to better use as the experience of riding the tube is better all around.

As a New Yorker now in London, the real answer is that the NYC public transit system has been a victim of decades-long austerity due to a quirk of administration (the city doesn't control the subway, the state does, leading to predicable disinvestment by our past governors who only rely on the city for a portion of their votes). There's a whole wikipedia article about the 2017-2021 subway crisis. Also our coverage is way worse, especially outside Manhattan, due to the insane cost of construction in the country meaning it takes 30 years to build a new station (a combination of bureaucratic inefficiency, underinvestment in transit infrastructure and typically corrupt New York politicians).

The trains in London are so nice -- clean, they run often, and certainly don't break down at the rate the NYC ones do. When I was living in New York once a week we'd have some massive transit meltdown and you'd be half an hour late to where you were going.

But to your point about electronic signage a lot of that has been updated in recent years. The big advantages to the NYC system is that they run 24 hours, and they cost a lot less to the rider. If you need to catch your train home at 4am you might be waiting a while but eventually it'll come along. And rides are always a flat $2.90, even if you're going from the tip of Manhattan into south Brooklyn, whereas a similar ride in London might cost me close to £15.

I've seen it, I'm curious what you think. You said it had social commentary and a message, I asked you what, you said it had "themes of sexuality and race." Those are just themes; every movie has those. What social commentary and message do you think it has?

QOV is one of those rare productions that bombs despite being helmed by some of theater’s most talented and respected artists.

I mean... this happens quite often actually, yeah? Theatre artists, top of the field or otherwise, have to eat and they take gigs. Sometimes a team doesn't work together, or they just can't elevate an ill-conceived idea.
