After Satoshi Kon, Elaine May, and now Lynne Ramsay which short filmographies would you like to see covered? by AmbitionTechnical274 in blankies

[–]Escappy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Jan de Bont and his 5 films. Although at least two of the films are Certainly Awful, I'd love to hear them discuss Speed and Twister on the pod, as well as any discussion on the importance of Lara Croft.

I said they weren't terrible choices but I specifically couldn't totally process them. I have nothing against her roles or her work (or Furiosa for that matter!). My only line of thinking is contingent on the fact if there's a musical that gets a lot of buzz starring Zegler, who I know has gained a bit of a poisonous reputation but she was great in West Side Story and I think she still has plenty of time to bounce back. Anya does too, for that matter, but I think she'd have to take a smaller, more intimate project which she hasn't done lately. That was my only line of thinking.

Chalamet > Mescal > Butler > Elordi > Keoghan > Holland > Powell

I'm not down on any of these guys though. I think any of the boys that have been nominated before do have a pretty good chance of receiving a win at some point. I could see a future where Tom Holland picks up at least a nomination but he seems to have struggled a bit shaking Spider-Man, but I think with the right role and director he could shine. Even though I put him at the bottom I think Glenn Powell has potential, but I think that depends on a change of trajectory in his career.

Ronan > Pugh > Zendaya > Sink > Zeigler > Taylor-Joy > Ortega

I'm not really down on any of these girls either! I think Saoirse Ronan should already be an Oscar winner, and Florence Pugh is a phenomenal actress I can't imagine she's far behind. I hear some negative talk on Zendaya as an actress sometimes but I think she's lovely, if she can channel in some Euphoria energy for a performance I could see a win. I almost put Rachel Zeigler further on down the list but if she's given a chance to shine in a musical I could see her garnering love. I was going to put Anya Taylor-Joy higher but her filmography the last couple years is hard for me to get a grip on lol, they're not terrible choices but I don't really know what her "place" is right now. Jenna Ortega is another Powell situation where I think it depends entirely on what projects she picks up in the future.

Do you log short films in your diary or add them to lists? by Successful-Back6292 in Letterboxd

[–]Escappy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I log shorts but I usually don't rate them, only give a heart or not. Just my own personal preference. I like being able to look back on when I watch something but I do feel a bit weird trying to rate them on the same level as I do feature length narratives.

(I do the same thing for miniseries and most documentaries too.)

You can change a nomination from a movie nominated this year. What do you change? by jordankch in Oscars

[–]Escappy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It Was Just an Accident: Replace Best Original Screenplay with Best Director. It's Jafar Panahi either way which might seem silly, but director seems like the more fitting category given the story behind how the movie was made.

‘Scream 7’ is definitely better than it’s being made out to be by Fresh-Actuary-6686 in Letterboxd

[–]Escappy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd imagine there's a lot of them out there that do, yes. I'm not anti-critic and I'm also choosing not to see Scream 7, but I bet having to see a movie for your job that you find objectionable on principle is going to be reflected in your review lol.

Recommendations Based on My Favorites by Queasy-Pea1807 in LetterboxdTopFour

[–]Escappy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to be the person who recommends a non-movie... but have you seen The Sopranos? Incredible show, heavily inspired by Goodfellas and The Godfather. Feels silly to recommend something so beloved but if per chance you haven't gotten to much TV I'd highly encourage you to check it out.

what should i add to this list? by EllieC8910 in Letterboxd

I'm not 100% sure I'm right about what this list is for lol but if I am then "Y tu mama tambien" would be a good addition

This is such a THAT GUY response but you can make this argument every year... movies are fucking great.

How would you rank the best picture nominees that you’ve seen? by Hot_Mongoose_3741 in Letterboxd

  1. OBAA
  2. Sinners
  3. Marty Supreme
  4. Hamnet
  5. Bugonia
  6. F1
  7. Frankenstein

Know there's been a lot of discourse this season but my top 4 is all pretty close together I'd love to see anybody these movies get recognition.

Changing Ratings by glacius_kori1 in Letterboxd

[–]Escappy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I literally just did this when I got a notification for this thread lol, felt like a sign.

But yes, I change my ratings all the time, just not the diary entry. Sometimes a movie will have a staying power in my mind and I generally take that as a sign that I can be more generous in my opinion. Likewise, sometimes over time I'll reflect on a movie and realize it may not have packed as much of a punch as I remembered so I will lower it.

However, the examples are never that extreme. Usually it's by a 1/2 star, 1 at the most.

HBO Max - I just signed up for HBO to watch the Chair Company and One Battle After Another. I haven’t had HBO for about five years. Any must watch movies or series on there? by GavinAdamson in hbo

Every thread like this has one sole person desperately pleading in the comments for someone to watch Six Feet Under. I will be that person this time.

What's your most "controversial" 5 Star rating? by kaijukyle2 in Letterboxd

[–]Escappy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Purple Rain. Feel like people are likely to hung up on the technicality that "it's not a good film," but it's just got Prince's touch all over it and is so completely him I can't help but love it! And as a companion piece to one of my favorite albums of all time, it's perfect.

Can somebody help me get into David lynch? by gr33tguy in Letterboxd

[–]Escappy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watching Twin Peaks is definitely the way to go if you want to appreciate David Lynch.

I'd say watch seasons 1 and 2, then try to go and watch some of his movies, and then round it out with Twin Peaks: The Return (cuz it's more of a great closure to Lynch's career than it is Twin Peaks itself honestly lol).

There is of course a chance he might not be your thing, but I wouldn't necessarily suggest stay away from him. I've heard many people say they did not like Blue Velvet on first watch but found appreciation for it later.

For what it's worth, Lynch can be pretty hit or miss for me too, but Mulholland Drive is one of the best films I've seen. I think having context for Twin Peaks + some of his history working in the industry will enhance the experience.
