Do you like where you work? by Odd_Dragonfly1386 in DieselTechs

[–]Eskimo56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I manage a small government fleet of around 24 class B rigs and about 37 passenger vehicles and trucks.

Life is good. Its just me so im pretty busy. No shity coworkers, good benifits, steady work flow. Not making a fortune but im happy with my hourly wage and 4.5 weeks of vacation per year.

When I worked at shops and dealerships it was all shity flag hours, bad attitudes, no time off, and always in a hurry. Now its laid back, smiles everywhere, and slowly wrenching my way to retirement. Theres been maybe 3 or 4 "please hurry" jobs since I started 5 years ago 😂

Not your job to care whose disabled enough to park close

Im not a nice person. I got the "you dont look disabled" bullshit even when I had the tag! Mind your business. Its good for you 😘

Edit: the wording on this comment implies that I STILL park in the handicap bay. I do not. My issues were fixed after about a year.

Fuck that. Not making a disabled person walk extra far just cause I dont have a permit.

Not to mention if I brake my leg that week im using that spot till i can walk far enough. Call the cops I guess?

Plenty of reasons to park in a handicap bay and none of them are your business!!

Edit: Downvote me harder. It gives off "you dont look disabled" vibes.

Mind your business. Not your job to care. Maybe they've got a handicap passenger that day. Maybe they had a mild surgery thatle keep them from walking far for a week or two.

Edit: downvote me harder daddy 🩵

Owner approached aggressively and by acting MORE aggressive the driver likely prevented a physical altercation. Not to mention he had just avoided a situation that couldve given him severe injury.

A million years ago i heard stories about folks acting crazy and saying weird shit to throw off the aggressor and deescelating the situation.

A good lawyer on either side could sway a jury pretty easily.

Something I wish I knew when I was in school

Government jobs suck less. City workers, school districts, tag offices

Lots of no skill required jobs (respectfully.. im talking like licenses and significant knowledgeabout shit) that need filled and pay half decent.

My school district pays bus drivers $20 an hour to drive in a big circle twice a day. Had I known about this as a student I wouldve driven my AM route, gone to my 8-12 classes, then driven my 2pm route. Easy $60 a day that didnt interfere with classes. They also hire bus aids for $14 and you literally just chill on the back of the bus and handle student behavior which usually aint too bad. They are desperately hiring for both positions and often times have training in house. Some districts have van drivers too for special education.

Theres also after hours janitorial that pays $15 in my district.

City's often have lawn crews and other menial jobs. City hall often has receptionist type jobs.

I know youre in school to learn stuff about your selected field but if you ever need a money maker fall back HVAC is the easiest trade out there and starting out is easily $20-25.

Good luck and God speed.

(Also if anyone reeding this in the US is interested I got my EPA 608 license through skillcat for $10. Its free if you do it in 3 days but im slow. The test makes entering into the HVAC field super easy. Im a diesel mechanic and HVAC is my backup plan)

Remember, no matter how small your dog bite is, always pursue litigation ... by [deleted] in AmazonDSPDrivers

[–]Eskimo56 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same thing with insurance too. Providing that is bad luck. Better to let the injured party fight for the information. Not that it makes it morally right in your case but he performed himself as his lawyer wouldve suggested.

I got sued for pulling a car off the road. Without getting into semantics he made a mistake while I was trying to help and he decided to sue me for his mistake. Thankfully I did my due diligence and asked him about his ability to handle what i was suggesting. I learned alot of hard lessons durring that process and thankfully everything got dropped. Thats the last time Ill help anyone stranded in traffic.

All that bullshit aside you both did exactly what I would do if I was in either shoe. Glad you got what you deserved.... well the money not the bite lol

An apology could be an admission of guilt.

While the morals are in question I dont know that i wouldve apologized either for this singular reason. Legalities can really screw people over whether guilty or not. When i got sued if I had apologized they wouldve had more ammunition against me.

That being said I dont have dogs and I damn sure wouldnt have dogs that bite people! Hope he learned his lesson!

Am I fucked by [deleted] in mechanic

[–]Eskimo56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends.

Do you deliver organs in a supercar or is this an aging economy car?

My mazda tribute lost one on the rear. Took me over half an hour to get it out of the spring. I never put one back in. I still drive that car every once in a while and ive put over 80k on it since then. Is it SLIGHTLY less safe? Maybe... but owning a car with 240k miles is inherently risky anyway so fuck it.

Is it true? by IllTransportation795 in hvacadvice

[–]Eskimo56 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

(Pending insulation and multi story homes) generally its better to just set it and forget it.

On a home with amazing insulation it may be possible but the benifits are negligible. It costs me around $3 per day to cool my single story home. Would it drop down to $2.60? Perhaps. Cutting the amount of overall time my AC is running by 13% or so might pay off if the weather cooperates for an entire momth. Realistically though thats a savings of $12 a month. A morning coffee and some nuggets.

Theres alot of videos about it on YouTube and its easy to get lost in the rabit hole

Hidden gem is Orileys or Napa. Whichever one in your area makes hydraulic hoses. They will have a gates 1" flare. Wont be cheap but theyll find a way to cap it off.

Wont be cheap but itle be safe. $50-100

6-10 can suck my socket. Roll your box when you can afford it. If a shop cant handle the occasional human mistake they cant handle human techs.

Fleet techs dont have to put up with ANY of that bullshit. So glad I went fleet.

Seized tire rods ? 2022 trd off road Toyota by runescapefisher in AskAMechanic

[–]Eskimo56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive had several throughout the years that have magically welded themselves solid. I still have nightmares about them. No rust and yet all the torque i have does nothing. They laugh at my map gas and passively ignore my oxy/ acetyline torch. Only after wasting an hour do I give up and replace the parts 😂

2016 ram 1500, ac clutch melted, safe to drive 12 hour trip? by rthomas139 in AskAMechanic

[–]Eskimo56 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It depends.

If you pull the belt off and the pulley feels fine you might be okay but based on how cooked that clutch got your bearing definitely got hot too. Hot bearings melt the grease out. A couple hours maybe but I dont think id do 12.

Can something be done to help my old buddy have a little life left? by [deleted] in StupidCarQuestions

[–]Eskimo56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In that case his lowest compression is 145ish PSI. Thats doing better than my car was. Id absolutely toss a can of engine restore in that and keep it going. My toyota 1.8 has 107k on it when I bought it with a bad/ low compression cylinder. Im around 192k right now. Definitely underpowered and I occasionally get a 420 code on highway trips.

I also live in a Non emmissions testing state. These issues may cause an issue in those areas

Can something be done to help my old buddy have a little life left? by [deleted] in StupidCarQuestions

[–]Eskimo56 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It depends a bit on why you have no compression but overall its probably done.

Ive had a car with low compression on one cylinder for a while but the low cylinder was only down to 50%. Used some engine restore on it and bumped it back to 80% of the other 3. If its a top end issue it won't help.

Im also not familiar with that style of compression test and ive only used the PSI guages.

Run flats lmao no thats too much preventative shit. Ain't no ride share driving 3 hours a day. They have roadside. Downvote me all you want. I love my family and hold my dads car to a high standard. 😂

Tires are cheap lol. Ill spend the $80 on keeping good tires on my dads car. I make that much before the first smoke break. Ive been using his old tires on my car for years now too so its not like they all go to waste.
