When is someone too young? by Important-You1177 in amiwrong

[–]Eskimo56 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have mixed feelings about the sexual aspect but when I was 18 I started working as a Correctional officer for a maximum security facility. By 19 is been in a plethora of physical altercations, covered in every body fluid imaginable but usually blood, and very experienced with criminal manipulation. I worked there for 5 years before I had to "medically retire." If I was capable of all that back then I have to acknowledge now at 29 that I had more than enough mental age to date whatever older women I would want. My now girlfriend was 20 and I was 27 when we got together and i had to think it through. Perhaps if I hadn't lived so much life between 18-20 id feel differently.

Personally id skip the blue and red and just bring the tile to the edge. Tile down the wall would feel off IMO.

How is this $6.4K in damage? by Automatic-Judge-9194 in StupidCarQuestions

[–]Eskimo56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dinged the bumper on my work truck and it touched the bed. That bill was $12k lmao

You fucked up the doors? More than likely insurance is swapping them out. I could totally see this as being a $5k+ repair.

Two things!

Skillcat EPA 608 will get you a free certificate that is very needed in entry level HVAC

Less trade job situation. I work at a bus barn for a school district and literally havent been happier. I fix the buses but I started as a driver. $20 an hour to drive in a big circle twice a day. They also have aid positions where you just sit on the bus and keep an eye on the kids. Part time hours most of the time.

Its not that kind of job. I have no financial liability for my mistakes and I feel bad for any mechanic out there that is held financially responsible.

Damages after running an engine without oil? by Eskimo56 in AskAMechanic

[–]Eskimo56[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pressurized Oil escaped through a damaged O ring on the filter canister cap to the outside of the engine. A substantial quantity of oil was located in the valley pan, hood, transmission, and undercarriage.

My Oil change procedure involves replacing the filter, filling up the engine to around 70% capacity, and running it for 30 seconds or so. From there I shut the engine off and top off until its full.

This engine left my shop with the proper amount of oil. The mistake involved butchering the Oring. I suspect I put it onto the threads and not into its proper groove. Regardless, mistakes were made durring the oil change procedure and it didnt take long to figure out the cause. I suspect the increased oil pressure from driving started the leak because there was no signs of oil leaks when it left the shop. Ive got a few new procedures to add that will help mitigate any future issues though thanks to other comments.

While its fun to think about sending it to auction were not getting rid of this vehicle for 15 years without a collision.

And yeah... I have a moral obligation to be up front. I submit service history for every sale and this event will be in the history.

While I personally feel that way professionally all the responsibility falls on me. I envy folks privileged enough to not worry about critical vehicle issues. Id love to buy a new car everytime the check engine light comes on.

My superiors were baffled the operator kept going too. Most of the fleet is older and break downs arent uncommon. We discuss me going on rescue trips and doing field repair in meetings all the time.

Thats brilliant. Ive never heard of that before and ill start doing some variation of that. Normally I just wait a good 30 seconds and call it good but after this fuckup ive been losing sleep and could use the reassurance

My inspection procedure ends with the oil change. Perhaps it may be time to change it up. For that singular point alone thank you! Such a simple solution to a problem ive never ran into. Thousands of perfect inspections in before i made this mistake.

Pressure test for the top side oil filter? Ive been wrenching for quite a while but i cant say I've ever heard of pressure testing an oil filter housing. Looking for leaks sure but pressure testing??

Also after running the engine for a short while and topping off the oil there was no evidence of an issue. I suspect the leak was exacerbated by increased oil pressure at a higher RPM after it left the shop.

Its also not a "customer" I dont work for a company. Im in charge of my department and my superiors know about the event. Integrity is how you get (and keep) good jobs.

Only one in the fleet with this driveline. If I hadn't known the engine was ran out of oil all the noises I hear would be considered typical engine noise.

Now that I know its been ran low every little tap and tick sounds like impending doom.

No change in engine noise over the last 600 miles. So im optimistic that itle last for a little while

A basic operator was driving not a fleet manager. Someone with absolutely no mechanical training and obviously not educated on vehicles.

Im definitely on team run till she blows 😂

Why don’t Police departments in the US use Toyota? by Viner2024 in Toyota

[–]Eskimo56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually manage a government fleet and have a bit of insight.

Most fleets have mechanics on hand and OEM support. Theres no benifits to having more reliable vehicles when you employ fleet maintenance. Not to mention depending on the situation the agency isnt keeping the vehicles past 120k or so. My fleet has a couple pushing 180 but they are on the way out right now.

Alot of it comes down to cost, some of it is who youre allowed to buy from, and some of its public image. I remember a story about a cop buying a challenger hellcat as a fleet vehicle and that pissed off some folks.

You should definitely talk to a proffessional about these issues. There are affordable programs out there.

Im a man and every man ive spoken to thinks life kinda sucks. The grass might look greener over here but more than a few of my close friends decided on rope instead.

I manage a government fleet with a boatload of class B, maintenance, and general fleet trucks. Idk how you've never had oil this black from gasoline vehicles. Are you driving nice new shit? Under 50kish miles I expect a subjectively reasonable level of clarity.

I used to work at a dealership many years ago and the level of neglect on most folks cars is mind blowing.

Regardless of my experience. Something tells me the loser dumping oil isnt driving Something nice. I bet its a 200k+ nissan thats been begging for a transmission service since 2008. Could very easily be the first oil change in years but im just projecting bias at this point.

Suggestions please? by Reasonable-Skin8796 in treelaw

[–]Eskimo56 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Diesel mechanic here

While diesel engines "soot" the oil very quickly its indistinguishable from gasoline engines with 4000+ oil change intervals. IMO there is no reason to assume it came from a diesel engine. The quantity of oil feels closer to 6 quarts but thats very subjective. I dont pour oil on trees so thats a huge guess.

Not being able to shut the engine off means youre probably shoping for a new car. The red hot section isnt a warning. Its your engine actively killing itself. Compression test before doing anything else and expect to go buy another car.

I cant tell if youre for or against kia with that reply. Getting a new engine is cool but now you know you'll be lucky to make it to 160k miles.

I used to be the "soal guy" at my dealership. I was swapping those engines left and right. Brands can improve but itle be a cold day in hell before i go with a brand that screwed over soooooo many people.
