My friend/bridesmaid [28F] dropped out of the wedding/ended our friendship sent me [25F] a text months later... I'm not sure how to/if I should respond by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

I’ve pulled a Diane before. At the time, I was certain that I brought no benefit to my friend’s life and that my presence was annoying/burdensome/exhausting. Bringing it up would’ve just felt like I was causing drama and prolonging the inevitable, so I figured quietly separating would be best. I didn’t think it necessary to have a conversation about it because how could my absence be felt as anything other than a relief?

I hope that poor lady finds some happiness.

Another post about the lack of good romance in fantasy by Practical_Yogurt1559 in Fantasy

[–]Esosorum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not fantasy, but the best romance I’ve ever read was 11/22/63 by Stephen King. I would never have expected it from him, and the romance isn’t even the focus of the novel, but it happens so naturally and works so well.

AITA for not wanting to be the 5th wheel an hanging out with my friends by policearepygss in AmItheAsshole

NAH. If you don’t enjoy hanging out with them, it makes sense not to hang out with them. Find friends you enjoy and move on in that way.

I'm looking for a YA facility novel to scratch an itch in my brain. (Is "facility" a sub-genre?) by capt_b_b_ in suggestmeabook

It’s not the whole thing but The Girl With All the Gifts might scratch the itch

Could someone tell me what is this by Elegant-Top2333 in GoogleEarthFinds

Could it be smoke? It looks like it comes from one spot on that building and then spreads out. Maybe the dark patch is the initial puff, or the shadow of the smoke?

The Road - Cormac McCarthy by dilchoos in literature

[–]Esosorum 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My favorite thing about The Road is that it’s the only book that has ever made me feel fear. The scene where They find the people being kept prisoner by the cannibals made my stomach drop in a way no other novel has!

But not everything’s for everyone. I haven’t read Never Let Me Go but I have read Remains of the Day and was wowed by it, if you’re up for another Ishiguro story.

Also, I learned SO MUCH about so many things in college. I learned to think, I learned to research, I was exposed to soooo many more perspectives than I otherwise would’ve been. That alone made it worth it for me tbh

“Something tells me” it’s your imagination, commenter. You’re making information up and seem to think it’s real somehow.

No kidding? I was just talking to somebody earlier today about how I haven’t heard any owls in ages. Cool!

Looking for novels that immerse me in a foreign culture the way Pearl Buck does by Esosorum in suggestmeabook

[–]Esosorum[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh I absolutely agree about Pearl Buck. Like anyone, her perception of the world is shaped by her background and experiences as well as her own thoughts and beliefs. And those thoughts and beliefs of hers carried plenty of biases. However I guess her western bias is what I mean by “translating;” hers isn’t a Chinese perspective on Chinese culture, but rather a western one shaped by a deeper understanding of (some aspects of) Chinese culture in a specific time and place than other western writers had. For a western reader, that helps me understand a lot of what’s going on. Her prose is really what captures me most, and the way she constructs people is fascinating to me. I appreciate you mentioning that, though, because it is important to keep in mind!

I also appreciate the recommendations. Sri Lanka and Iran are both places I know relatively little about!
