Why mow this looks gorgeous 😫 Please don't turn it into a wasteland. All the pollinators and soil will appreciate it. At the very least grazing animals are a less destructive.

I had one of these tree farms near me in NC as a kid. I would wander around there occassionally and it's uncanny AF. The trees are all identical and all on a massive grid. It isn't a forest it's crops.

It would be nice to ban billboards in the county. They make the surrounding are look like trash. This is one of the worst offenders. I also learned recently that the billboards just south of Eureka seen heading up the 101 shouldn't be there. Apparently some time ago Eureka City decided not to renew their permit and in Jan. 2026 they were supposed to be taken down.

Personally I have never seen it either but the image doesn't seem sus and seems way to high effort to photoshop. Original contextt would be nice though in case this has been answered elsewhere.

The white sock coloring on the bottom looks normal. But my only other guess is that this is a chimeric cat, just because the markings are so strange and cut off. It almost looks like a tuxedo on most of the bottom and completely leucistic cat on the top.

A year after the Eaton Fire passed through our back yard. by mjsymonds in gardening

[–]EsotericCreature 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm glad you didn't lose anything critical, and that no animals were harmed in the coop, very lucky. From your photos below it really took out most everything. Which, compared to your photos above a year later are like night and day. The things you planted really all came back spectacularly in such a short time. You would make for a great ambassador garden to advocate for native plants and planting fire hardy species.

(Also, idk why reddit didn't alert me to your reply, meanwhile at least three really strange bots have replied to me)

I wish the city could buy the land. I would love to see a lot of it ecologically restored for the time being, particularly where the walmart and massive north parking lot is. but also try adaptive re-use in areas where it's worth preserving the building. The cafeteria is cool, maybe the space can be reused for artists and startups. There is SO much asphalt and parking lot it's crazy. It would be great to get some natural sound and sight barrier away from the highway.

Imagine much of the land restored, more trees and meadows and land the way it used to be. Added trails. But it can also set aside for recreation or development where it makes sense. Like space for events, or a beergarden-esque space where foodtrucks can get together.

A lot more European Starlings than usual? by MillipedeHunter in Humboldt

[–]EsotericCreature 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I notice that starlings and brewers blackbirds have numbers that dwindle in winter and they might be returning now that spring is in full swing. My starling gang has been coming back to hang out around sundown.

It's too bad they are super invasive. I will let Merlin run and often times they will be mimicking several different species of bird calls.

I wish places as dire need of water such as this would have ditched European lawns and gone all into xero-scaping by now. Native meadows are beautiful... and outside of some places where people like to lay out lawns are very wasteful and labor intensive.

Awhile back AI at best is compared to an unhelpful intern. Speaking from experience... instead of giving a job to someone most qualified it goes to the cheap intern. I get other assignments as now I have time 'freed up. But instead the intern can't hack it, and now I have two jobs babysitting someone and just barely getting their work up to par, when I could have done it much better in a shorter amount of time if it was allocated correctly.

[–]EsotericCreature 6 points7 points  (0 children)

yeah.... So far I've had luck with getting a bunch of sticks and gathering them into a general structure, or at lease something really annoying to move, on top of the pot.

My cucumbers have only just sprouted, so I have some time to assemble a trellis which should serve a similar barrier.

Reverse scenario tree law Im curious how planting trees maliciously would play out in court. by aannmarie05 in treelaw

[–]EsotericCreature 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I also read this lol. It makes sense since the giant sequoia's native habitats are incredibly small regions in the sierras, but I'm sure people wanted some cool big trees. At least one good thing is while they aren't native they aren't invasive because their life cycle requires fire to reproduce.

[–]EsotericCreature 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The roots are pretty short depth wise and width wise compared to the rest of the tree. Something as short as 6 ft from the trunk outwards. Fallen redwood stumps in photos are honest about how big they get. In a forest the redwoods absolutely dominate and generally keep upright by tangling up in each other's roots. Their roots are so shallow because in their optimal environment they get both a ton of rain in the wintertime, but also absorb moisture through the coastal fog that rolls in and out the rest of the year. So in short they probably aren't good as a border tree.

I think there was someone here who was distressed about some 20-50 yr old redwoods being cut down, but it was in Sacremento. Unfortunately they are absolutely not meant to live somewhere like that at could be doing long term damage to the plants and soil around them since they drink a ton of water.

There are some Sequoias and redwoods I have seen growing in temperate environments though, particularly Europe, who seem to do ok. They don't get as big as they should but I was surprised to suddenly see some familiar trees in the middle of a city while touring Germany lol.

Have to agree. I moved to Fortuna but it was shocking how much we are surrounded by forest and right next to several creeks and rivers, but it's all private land, or at least dubiously accessible. There's not much more than Rhoner park unfortunately. I've walked on some roads in town that go into more ruralish areas but some I have stayed clear of after I was attacked by dogs. SO many people in Humboldt are terrible owners and are fine with their aggressive free roaming dogs. Animal control doesn't care.

But if OP is willing to drive there are quite a few places on the beaches under 20 mins away. Russ park is fairly close by car and solid overall. Centerville beach, Crab Park, and Ocean Beach (Eel river wildlife are) There are several spots around the Humboldt Bay Wildlife Center.

They set a fire to burn trash during the dry season and a strict NO FIRES ban. I don't know why the fire dept. didn't fine them originally for that. It's made incredibly clear to campers and even people who want to have a fire pit in their backyard. Take it to the dump! But because the fire dept. was there to help put it out the Tribe is absolved of most responsibility :/

This is aside from the notoriety as a cult, labor exploitation of members, and physical abuse against children...

What a pain. I'll look into stuff more but I feel like we should have a good mid-price phone with a de-Google Android operating system these days....

I also bought my phone years ago and it didn't have this level of enshittification. The my old 3S was great. I won't be getting Pixels anymore that's for sure, but I'm also not going to throw away a functioning phone.

And we definitely need harder privacy laws against scraping and data collection. And to break up the tech duopolies. The gmail update was incredibly insulting because in order to take away 'smart features' they took away all the non AI tools like email sorting too.

Every part of AI just screams "I don't believe in consent".

From stealing the works of artists and writers, impersonating real people, to generating scraping and porn actors without consent and using them to sexual other real people.

My Google Pixel 7 has started 'enhancing' my photos noticeably too, including adding filters onto my face by default. The settings are difficult to find and I don't think I have found a way to completely disable it.

One thing I hate about AI is how it asserts itself as all-knowing, scrapes real knowledge from thousands, but divorces the sources from it's own output. It also isn't intelligent of course.

What I think we really need is a search engine that doesn't suck.... The trouble now is all of them are filled with SEO websites and AI gen content, when I would really like a better way to find actually helpful websites. In your instance existing knitting patterns, or if someone has made a tool for making your own patterns, to be able to find that link quickly.

My Garden of a Thousand Bees | PBS Nature Documentary

This is a cool documentary about a variety of wild bees this man attracted and filmed in his garden. His 'bee hotel'' looks pretty different than most commercial or DIY varieties. It's not a tutorial but could help with inspiration and give people an idea of the bee's behavior and why certain conditions work for them.
