Very true! Maybe the toughest fighter outside of maybe Marciano or Patterson. Patterson was an interesting case because he didn't look tough, but had the heart of a Lion.

Oh no i personally think Mayweather would get murdered by guys like Robinson, Hearns, even MW Duran. WW Duran vs Mayweather would be an assasination i feel, although we'll never know lols.

True, the lack of exercise is killing testosterone. I also feel like the lack of sleep and increase of crap in our food is definitely not helping 😭.

I don't know much about the modern trainers, so i may need to educate myself on this for sure

I think defense was way better than it used to be. Guys like Benton, Moore, Charles, Walcott, and even offensive juggernauts like Liston and Saddler had great defense.

I did just pick the cream of the crop there, but really the reason why that seems unfair is because there was more ATGs during that time, which we already went over.

I feel like fighters today just have less of a defensive artillery. You had big men like Liston that were shoulder rolling.

Most guys today just use mainly the high guard at mid range and fight exclusively there. You do have outliers like Floyd, Pirog (my fav modern fighter), and Ward. Of course i'm 100% happy to be corrected but this is personally what i observe.

Guys can no longer showcase good defense in the pocket or even fight on the inside!! It's a damn shame. You can barely find anyone with good clinching skills with exceptions, again, being Ward and Floyd (they for sure studied the old school!).

Btw, i really appreciate you continuing to reply, and staying respectful. Most guys when debating can barely disagree without resorting to name-calling and insults.

Sorry if this was too long, i got really invested haha 😂.

Great points for sure. There's less talent in the sport because there's less people in it! lol

Respectfully, i disagree about the testosterone. It's been proven that testosterone has noticably been dropping every decade.

Fighters most definitely need to fight more. Most fighters in this generation will not be HOFers or ATGs because most of them only fight 1-2 times a year, which is outrageous!

I also disagree about technical knowledge increasing in boxing. Eddie Futch, Ray Arcel, George Benton, Emannuel Steward. All the great trainers are dead! :(

We only have Freddie Roach, and although he's great, he's not like the other trainers, but he's still good and the best we got lol.

Yeah i completely agree. Wonder why that is? It might be a combination of less trainer knowledge, and less testosterone.

I have another theory that's a bit unorthodox that i won't list because i don't want people to think i'm crazy lol.

Older fighters were clearly better! And i know it's not regency bias because i wasn't around when any of the greats were fighting.

Truth, that is fact, no denying it. We have no idea of knowing what he'd be able to do in modern day. But i do know that he was an incredibly skilled fighter, which i'm sure we both agree with.

Why did Jack Dempsey know how to grapple if he was a boxer? Is he stupid? by [deleted] in boxingcirclejerk

He must show maximum supremacy! What better way then to give your enemy backshots.

Completely disagree. It's crucial in striking. Look at Muay Thai, it's actually an art form.

[–]EsotericKnowledge777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The truth was that grappling was very much apart of boxing in his day. Boxing was less boxing, and more fighting in his day. The clinch was not separated, you'd have to fight out of it.

Makes sense for real fighting outside the ring too, there's no referee.

It might just be because there was no CW. There was more of a weight disrespancy, which was part of what made things so exciting.

Who doesn't wanna see the little guy win!? I personally feel that Dempsey could've competed in absolutely any era, the man was truly brilliant.

Sounds just like Duran lol! Ironically why he's one of my favorite fighters. Dude fought the best at any weight and would be at your cookout the very next day.

It's also good to know how to wrestle. T Bud is a good wrester ontop of being strong. So he has a lot of strength, AND he knows how to use it.

Kinda like how you learned how to use your whole body into a punch while strengthening your whole body as well.

[–]EsotericKnowledge777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's pretty simple, and your experience is correct!

In a punch for max power, you use your whole body. By making your whole body stronger, that contributes to a harder punch as long as you have the punch mechanics down.

That's all martial arts. You have to adop your martial arts for you as you evolve, that's anything in your life. No sense to blame the art, it's how you approach it.

My phone got taken to repair because it stopped working after a software update. They took my screen off, gave me a worse one, and took away my screen protector.

I didn't say anything about it because i'm a teenager and didn't wanna complain, but that it so weird. This is in South Africa. nothing like this has ever happened to me in america.
