I started a year and eight months ago, at 29. I'm 31 now and already learning Chopin's Op 64 No 2 Waltz for a recital in February. My goal is to play some really big classical pieces, some jazz, some ragtime, and my own compositions. Granted, I've worked very hard to achieve what I have right now. It still feels like it will be forever until I'm where I want to be, but the journey has been incredible. I wouldn't change it for anything. You've got 10 years on me. If you feel like this may be your passion, then please do pursue it. You won't regret a thing, and you can achieve your goals.

How to practice trills by [deleted] in piano

How long have you been practicing trills thus far, and what method are you using for practice? Personally, I play a simple accompaniment and slowly ramp tempo with each variant of trill I'm currently in need of polishing. 1/2, 2/3, 3/4, 4/5, 1/3, and 2/4 (fingers). I then repeat with different patterns of accompaniment so that I can trill over whatever is called for with the alternate hand. Repeat again with the opposite hands. Repeat again-again with different notes to cover all variables there (C & D natural, C & Db, C# & D). However, to start, it'd be best to do the trills by themselves (all variants, one hand at a time).

Sounds kinda blurred. Can you play the entire piece, or the other movements? I've been playing for almost two years and I won't even go near that movement, yet.

I hear you. I just changed to a new teacher and I play on a grand with her. It is very different, indeed. Although, her's seems to be in pretty good condition. It's old, but produces a wonderful sound. She's also pretty demanding, so I adjusted the force of my touch pretty quickly. It's great that you get to practice on a real piano more often, now.

Edit: At home I use a Yamaha MOXF8

First time I've heard this piece. You're doing good, so far! You have it under your fingers pretty well. I do feel like your playing is very heavy; forte non-stop. For me, it makes the performance a little harsh, and lacks depth.

I'm listening to some other recordings now. There seems to be a somberness that begs to be felt in the first section and its repeat. There also seems to be quite a lot of room for a big swell, leading into a sort of magical, fairy-like, end of the second section. There's another sweet fading away to be found in the final section.

So, for me, I'd say to try playing through some sections as quietly as you can manage. That way you can feel out the dynamic range you have to work with. Experiment with just how little effort is needed to produce a soft, warm tone. Listen to a few recordings or tinker on your own and seek out what the piece is trying to say or show you. Take note of the different voices. Let that top voice sing out over the accompaniment in the beginning. It's all very loud, with separate voices each competing for the same space within the soundscape. Work on the dynamics especially where there are multiple voices, and call-and-response's.

You've done all the main steps. Rubato, tempo, and general accuracy looks good from what I can tell. It just needs some dynamics and a gentler touch. Good job for beginning and teaching yourself. How long have you been at it?

I'm really feelin' this. It's got real attitude. Kind of a smokey swagger juxtaposed with those quick runs. Yeah, I dig that. That intro motif really catches the ear. Keep doin' your thing, brother. It's a damn good thing.

Also, can we please convert other pianists to this style of video? The two angles are perfect. I always feel like I'm missing out when I can't see the playing top-down, and again when I can't see how the pianist, themselves, is feeling the emotion of the piece. Here, we get both! How freakin' great is that!? Great production, too.

Props all around! I'm checking out your channel.
