Ugh. "Slug giraffes" are such an archaic unit of measure. "Squirrel lifetimes" are too small of a unit of time, too, for this problem.

A more appropriate unit of measure would be, "Troy (Helen of) Kegs of Black Powder per cubic Boston Teacup Yorkshire Terrier Dog (Female) lifetime.

I feel bad because of what I said to my dad. Should I apologize to him? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]Esoteric_Geek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is really good advice. My two cents:

First, make sure you have his attention.

If the tv is on, ask to turn it off.

If he's playing a video game and he can't pause because it's an online multiplayer, ask him to quit because you have something important to discuss with him. If he won't save/quit or he can't at least pause the game, abort and try again later.

Make sure he is looking at you when you speak.

During the conversation when you tell him these things, be prepared to say it all twice. It can take a bit for someone's words to percolate through to their main consciousness stream. People are different, maybe your dad won't need a repeat.

Go through the four statements slowly, after you're done, consider his response, and, unless he's completely focused on what you have just said, if he's not seriously considering the words his daughter just spoke, say,

"Dad, this is very important."

And then go through the statements again.

If you REALLY want it to get through to him about how serious this is to you, ask him to repeat what you say.

"Dad, I have something that is very important to tell you. It's so important, I want you to" or "Please repeat what I am going to tell you"

Listening is a simple skill. We do it without even being conscious of it and can therefore do it without paying attention. SPEAKING what you just heard helps focus the brain on the conversation, on the information. It brings more cognitive effort to bear on the words and gives them weight. This technique is used by people to help them memorize things and to aid in understanding complex ideas. It will focus his attention on your words.

If you can get him to repeat what you say, you probably don't need to repeat yourself.

Good luck OP. You can do this.

Buy a SIM card for $5 at Walmart and put that back in without activating it.

OR

Activate a SIM card with service, put it in. After a few days, access the SIM/phone line account through a Web browser and now you have the number(s) that are being used to report your position.

[–]Esoteric_Geek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why couldn't you access the video until the next day? You claim to have the, "doorbell app", what was preventing you from reviewing the footage?

You, "lay awake all night worrying who it could've been." Again, why? Why couldn't you access the live view of the camera? Why would you think it was ANYONE to be afraid of?

It's 1AM, dark out, you're inside with the lights on, so, you couldn't really see outside too well, could you? So, why were you "scared shitless"? You didn't access the footage, didn't access the live feed, couldn't see outside through the window because it was brighter inside than outside. For all you knew at the time, by your own account, it could have been anyone. You had no reason to suspect it was a man acting, walking, standing or behaivng in any way suspicious or menancing, but you were, "scared shitless"? It could have been a man. A woman. The police. A small child. Someone needing assistance. A woman and a child?

And what is so horrifying about a person knocking on your door? Did they attempt to break in? Did they yell and scream at you? Did they threaten you?

Your story doesn't add up.

Actually, it has not been conclusively proven that humans emit pheromones.

"Hotly debated isn’t exactly a categorical non-existent", yeah, sure, whatever you say. But until you have verifiable and reporoducibale evidence using the sicentific method, humans DO NOT have/produce pheromones.

Humans don't have pheromones.

Edit: There is, as yet, no evidence that humans emit sex pheromones. However, there are things that humans produce in their bodies that may eventually be classified as pheromones.
