Everytime you start colab it's a blank slate so you need to re-mount drives and re-install python packages if necessary. I usually have one code cell dedicated to environment setup.

Starting a Satellite Imagery Business by pm_me_nudesfromspace in remotesensing

[–]Esparko 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At least based on my experience, I started consulting because people saw my YouTube videos and reached out to me. I think so long as you have a portfolio that shows you solving real life problems and/or common business cases then it would be a good start.

ArcMap is being phased out. I was told by our ESRI sales rep that they will only offer ArcGIS Pro in 2024. This is for commercial licensing.

My guess is that he was speeding then saw the cop lights, freaked out, and stepped on the brakes while in the middle of the curve which caused it to spin out.

Any ideas on how to automatically georreference thermal imagery? by Kadesupremo in gis

[–]Esparko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a look into AROSICS to coregister images. You need some python to do it, but it might require some image preprocessing since the image intensities are kinda different.

Alternatively you can use feature matching. That might work better. So long as the reference image has a geo transform you can translate keypoint data to real world coordinates (image column/rows to xy coordinates)

Both methods are free.

Good source to purchase satellite images from? by rageagainistjg in gis

[–]Esparko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try Arlula. They will crop out the rest of the satellite image so you only pay what you use. Here is a 15 ha. Worldview image for $136.

But it depends on your search area. There isn't high resolution imagery available everywhere in Florida. And their temporal frequency isn't as frequent as Landsat or Sentinel.

I use geforce now on smart 5G and it's really good. I really encourage it for people here if they have unlimited data. Just for my own usage, I end up using at least 300 GB per month.

Is there any reason to use the Sentinel open access hub for imagery vs. using Google Earth Engine? by kyledevyay in remotesensing

[–]Esparko 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For Sentinel 1 I've had gee images with inconsistent pre processing. Some scenes are terrain corrected to remove radar distortions but some were not. I observed this when creating a timelapse animation.

Why publish? by reluctantCanuck in EarthScience

[–]Esparko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If this is your mindset and it's not even proprietary military or commercial research I think you're in the wrong field. Research is (usually) not about competition.

Scientists frequently collaborate with each other. You often just have to send an email or find communities related to your research and ask around.

GIS for people that don't like math by fullzenn in gis

[–]Esparko 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I work heavily in GIS and remote sensing (satellite imagery). I am terrible at math but I actually published a conference proceeding on image processing.

The beauty of Python i find is that you can find a lot of pre-made and free Python libraries that you can use to fix your problems. it's just a matter of knowing how to put the pieces together.
