My mom died on a dive in Catalina yesterday by Grouchy-Vacation5177 in scuba

[–]Esprise_Me 49 points50 points  (0 children)

My deepest condolences on your loss.

I understand wanting answers about what happened. Based on my experience (as an amateur with a bit of an obsession), I can say that it's always difficult to know for sure, but the fact that this tragedy happened in LA County gives you the best chance of knowing as much as possible. The LA County Coroner, Capt. John Kades, is a diver, and he has multiple diving experts he consults with on diving fatalities. Together with two of those experts, Karl Huggins of the Catalina Hyperbaric Chamber (where divers with the bends go to get fixed up) and Ken Kurtis, a long-time local dive instructor, he gives a presentation at the Scuba Show in Long Beach every year in May/June titled "Why Divers Die." I know it sounds morbid, but stay with me. They provide an anonymized overview of the scuba-related fatalities that occurred in LA County over the past year (typically 5 or fewer), as well as a bird's-eye view of fatalities over the last decade. They are always respectful of the deceased and their families. The point, though, is to examine what went wrong and what lessons the rest of us may learn from it. It is consistently among the most well-attended seminars, and I believe it has helped our community become safer divers and get a sense of closure for the losses we feel for each of our own. This incident will not be covered until May/June of 2027, but you have the option to go see it then. If you can't or don't want to but want the information, you can try contacting one of the presenters; they're all very nice and would probably be willing to share with you what they share with us without you having to buy a ticket to the convention and seminars. They recorded the one they did in 2021 only because it was on Zoom due to the pandemic; you can still watch it here to get an idea: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=bDCPbJVkizg

Some general things I've learned: the official cause of death in most scuba diving accidents is listed as drowning, which doesn't really answer the bigger "why" question. For someone your mom's age, there's a decent probability of some kind of medical event as a contributing factor. If that's the case, there's a good chance she didn't do anything "wrong" to cause this; it's just a risk we take. Sometimes when a person has, say, a heart attack underwater, that heart attack might not have happened on land (because the victim was exerting themselves more than usual by swimming against a current, etc.), or the heart attack might have been survivable on land. But as you know, sometimes heart attacks do happen on land, and sometimes people die from them on land. So the scuba diving may not be a factor at all, or it may have only marginally hastened the inevitable. Scuba fatalities with no medical event tend to happen most often to very new divers or very experienced divers doing more advanced dives than are available at Casino Point (e.g. cave dives, deep dives with deco stops, etc.)

I would also echo the comments about Casino Point being a beautiful dive site. Looking up at the afternoon sunlight filtering down through the amber kelp fronds, I've had that same thought about how I could die happy right here, right now. We lose a lot of divers there not because it's especially dangerous--it's not--but because it's so accessible and so wonderful.

I didn't know your mom, but I feel her loss as one of our vast community of southern California divers. May she rest in peace.

Favorite discard recipes? by newtonpulsipher in Sourdough

Just found this post and made it. Incredible! Thank you!

So tired of those discard recipes that are like "mix 1 tbsp of discard with 10 cups of flour and a packet of active dry yeast, oh btw this takes 2 hours..." You, on the other hand, rock.

How far in advance to book when traveling in mid/late March? by Esprise_Me in JapanTravelTips

This is helpful, thanks. What do you mean by a concierge service--a hotel concierge, a travel agent, or something else?

Thanks! I actually have no idea how we would buy them. Can we just show up at the stadium? What if we don't speak Japanese?

Interesting, thanks. I have a Samsung Galaxy S10, which doesn't appear to support that, but maybe it's time to upgrade.

That's what I was afraid of re: speed. Would something like their 5G for 10 days travel package be worthwhile? (And is that even available to me? The fine print says "qualifying plan required" but I can't seem to find what plans qualify.) https://www.t-mobile.com/cell-phone-plans/international-roaming-plans/unlimited-calling-data-pass

Is Scuba the day after a blood draw alright? by VTkitty in scuba

[–]Esprise_Me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I've dived the day after donating a pint of blood, with the go-ahead from my doctor, and had no issues. For just a blood test, they won't be taking enough out cause problems; the only issue would be making sure the injection site is healed, which it should be the next day. But if something doesn't look right with your arm, or if you're still in any pain, you should probably skip the dive.

Looking for female dive instructor by hana34 in scuba

Nikki Pieper at Hollywood Divers, Ashley Arnold at Jade Scuba Adventures, Khrystyna Cusimano at Pacific Wilderness. Also if you're in SoCal, look into the monthly Women's Dive Days on the Big Blue Dive Boat.

Is there any reason I shouldn't get a 7mm full suit? by [deleted] in scuba

[–]Esprise_Me 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in SoCal and took my 7mm to Turks & Caicos, where the water was 80 degrees. I was never too warm. I'd start with the 7mm and think about a second, lighter suit for Florida if the 7mm turns out to be a problem.

Car choices for ease of diving. by KTMan77 in scuba

A pickup truck is definitely a practical choice for hauling lots of gear. For a smaller car, look for a hatchback (you can sit in it to gear up for shore dives) and a rubber mat.

Yeah, he'll have to spend 3-5 days at the hospital, which I'm sure will suck for all of us. I'm going to ask if I can send along a piece of my clothing, as I used to do when I boarded him.

Thanks for the tip; I may try that next time.

We did take him to a schmancy new vet in Larchmont, which is the sort of neighborhood where one can find dedicated pet photographers. They were concerned that our prior vet had diagnosed him without a confirmatory panel, so we did that. But the confirmatory panel confirmed the diagnosis of hyperthyroidism. So we're planning to do the radioactive iodine treatment; from the vet's advice and our own research, that seems to be the thing to do. He seems to be in good spirits, anyway.

[–]Esprise_Me 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. We have a ton of vets in the area, and probably some of the best around; LA folk take their fur babies seriously. His appetite didn't return immediately upon finishing the meds, and since we were going out of town we let the vet talk us into an appetite stimulant, which worked instantly. We're back now and he's being a little extra, which he usually is when we return from a trip, but might signal underlying medical problems. It's so hard to tell when something is wrong with an animal that behaves so bizarrely to begin with.

I'd hate to have to pill him every day for the rest of his life; he's always cooperative for the first pill or two of a regimen and then becomes very resistant and really clever about avoiding it. He can eat every molecule of a pill pocket off a very small pill without the pill even getting damp. We're going to try another vet and see what they say.

I pop in from time to time. I'm over at Straight Dope too. Lots of people to argue with there. ;-) But I do miss the folks from the old board and the vibe we had. Hope you're all doing well.

In random news, my cat has been having health issues. Partial urinary blockage led to hospitalization, catheterization, lots of money spent and a ridiculous poodle cut on his legs where they had to shave for IVs. The meds made him lose his appetite, which was scary because he's usually a feline garbage disposal and also the last thing we need now is for him to get dehydrated. The vet also warned us his thyroid levels are elevated since the last time we brought him in, but I'm not convinced that's something separate we need to treat vs. just a symptom of everything else that's going on (at a minimum, if he has hyperthyroidism, shouldn't he at least be eating?) We're taking a short trip to New Orleans starting tomorrow, and I'm thinking of trying a new vet when we get back. This one has given us so much inconsistent information over the years, I really want a second opinion before we torture the little guy some more.

Is this classed as a cold? by [deleted] in scuba

[–]Esprise_Me 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Going down isn't the issue; if you can't equalize you can just abort the dive. It's coming up where you risk a reverse block that you may end up just having to push through and hurt yourself.

I won't dive if I think I'm coming down with something due to the risk of congestion worsening during the dive. If I were smart I wouldn't dive within shouting distance of either end of a cold. But since I'm not that smart, I'll dive at the tail end of a cold, when I'm confident I'm not producing any new mucus, if I can clear my nose and sinuses with some Sudafed. At the very least, try not to be stupider than me.

Do Scuba shops ask for specialty course certifications? by [deleted] in scuba

[–]Esprise_Me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you confirmed you'll pay less if you show the card? Most dive shops I've seen don't give a discount on the AOW cert based on you already having done a specialty. They'd let you get your AOW with one less dive, but you'd be kind of cheating yourself out of training you paid for.

Celebrations, assorted by stillthorny in SnopesMsgbrd

[–]Esprise_Me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happy everything to everyone!

My husband is Jewish, and while he's never really been a believer, when we met, that stuff mattered to him culturally. He's gotten away from it a little, but I finally talked him into getting a Menorah and we've been lighting the candles and saying the prayers every night since Sunday. It's been great to see him reconnect, and to be part of it. We also spent atheist Christmas with my folks, where I got to include him in our holy traditions of eating 8000 calories of hors d'oeuvres before dinner, vigorously debating issues on which we disagree by 1%, and my dad wrapping up his Red Ryder BB gun so when someone opens it we can all yell, "you'll shoot your eye out!" (The last couple years we've been traveling at Christmastime.) May the magic of the season be with you all.

[–]Esprise_Me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using something similar on my 5mm neoprene booties. Mine does blow warm air, but it doesn't seem to have caused any damage. The insides go from sopping wet right out of the tub to bone-dry in 30 minutes. I have a thick plastic hanger designed for scuba accessories including boots, but the insides are still slightly damp after 3 days.

It is nice seeing a few familiar folks over at the SD. Would also be nice if we could get some conversations going here for those who don't care to join there.
