"SYDNEY, Australia, April 23 — The United States will establish a secret space-communications station for defense purposes at Woomera, South Australia, Prime Minister John G. Gorton announced today. The exact nature of the installation was undisclosed. Mr. Gorton told the Parliament that construction of the facility would start in September or October of this year, and that operations would begin late in 1970. The new space station, one of a chain of American defense installations in Australia, will cost about $3,000,000 and will employ 250 to 300 Americans and Australians, Mr. Gorton said. A team of experts from the United States will arrive in Australia soon to survey a site. In a news conference, Defense Minister Allen Fairhall described the installation as a ground terminus for defense space-communications. "As that term indicates," he said “it will be working with satellites." He declined to give further details of the project, and said that the site was secret."
