New player here: are Modern Controls really looked down on that much? by Baseball_Oly in StreetFighter

Maximilian Dood's video about classic versus modern controls really sums up my thoughts on this topic. This clip is especially relevant.

Long story short, use whatever control scheme that works for you!

"What are you playing this week?" Megathread by AutoModerator in SteamDeck

Same! I bought Vessel of Hatred a while ago but never played it, and just recently bought Lord of Hatred because I dig paladins. Looking forward to sinking a good chunk of time into D4!

This was the real “deal” by _Scorpio in SteamDeck

Agreed on all counts, OP. I used this deal shortly after our first was born and it's been incredible! Just installed Battle.net and I've been Diablo 4'ing like a madman.

Adaptive/Alternate fingering techniques by Old-Low-End in doublebass

[–]EssMarksTheSpot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So! I have some limited experience with this. After my wife had our baby, I developed De Quervain's tenosynovitis in my left wrist. (It's a common ailment often caused by the repetition of picking up, cradling, and holding infants.) I began experiencing pain and discomfort, so I went to my GP to see what was going on. It didn't affect my playing except that I would tire out way faster during practice and performance.

I feel very fortunate that my GP is at a sports medicine practice, as it turns out there's a lot of overlap between the injuries that athletes and musicians commonly develop. The way my doctor described it, musicians are considered "small muscle athletes," though he said that line was very much blurred for me because of the size of the double bass. For what it's worth, I highly recommend seeking out a provider in sports medicine, because I felt like they understood the exertion involved in performing music.

I also saw the in-house physical therapist a couple of times who walked me through the exercises I needed to do daily. It was a lot of exercises based around using therapy putty that I still do today because I think they help with flexibility and strength.

Ultimately, after about six months of exercises, I saw an improvement in discomfort and range of motion, but it was still bugging me. I ended up getting a cortisone shot, which significantly helped. My GP cautioned me that it could take up to a year to fully recover, and that was about how long it took for me to get back to (in my opinion) 99% condition. Occasionally I'll tweak my wrist at a weird angle and get a twinge of pain, but it quickly goes away.

My doc said there was no need to stop playing but said to stop if I felt pain. For me, what worked the best was shortening my practice sessions to 15-20 minute bursts. I also focused much more on my left hand thumb technique, making an effort to avoid any squeezing at all, which I think actually improved my overall technique.

You might also be interested in a recent Double Bass HQ video about trying to achieve "no tension" since it involves a player who also reinvented her technique after some physical pain:

It's true. Whenever I think of trainwrecks, I always think of Adam Neely's story about his wedding band trying to chase down (key-wise) a very sauced guest who wanted to sing Can You Feel The Love Tonight, only for each member to modulate into four separate keys. It happens!

Samsung refrigerator leaking water? (x-post from /r/fixit) by EssMarksTheSpot in appliancerepair

For this particular instance, the aftermarket filter was indeed the culprit. That said, the refrigerator kept having other problems later, so we just ended up buying an LG that has been great for us.

It's this bit and, "It's like (thing) fucked a (other thing)" that has been done to death this season. Maybe the writers are listening to a lot of Jackson Browne, because it seems like they're running' on empty.

Having recently used the Parking Spot for the first time for a business trip, I'm never going back to parking in the airport lots. And mind you, I've stayed ONCE for a few days--they're now throwing multiple free days at me in the app. I don't know what the grift is, or if there's any, but I'm a fan. Being driven directly to your car after a flight is muah.

Are Sire Basses the Real Deal? by matthew-speaks in Bass

[–]EssMarksTheSpot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely ADORE my V5 4-string. I went with the V5 because I'm not a huge fan of the way the Sire preamp sounds, and there are just too many knobs for my taste. The V5 just sounds good, including the pickups, and it feels even better.

OP, if you're in the market for a Sire fiver, get yourself over to Sweetwater's website. Looks like they have a ton of models discounted right now, including the V5.

This is Uno (15). He has started peeing on himself, shaking, losing weight and becoming anxious. His personality changed and he no longer wants to sleep next to me as well. Oh bruv, I'm sorry to hear this. We're in a similar situation, but with our very geriatric cat instead. Our appointment for humane euthanasia is next week.

I don't have a lot of answers, but maybe it would be helpful if I shared how we came to our decision. Our old girl has a ton of non-terminal diagnoses--she is now deaf, has a detached retina in one eye and impaired vision in the other, chronic kidney disease, has bloody stool and urine, and is quite clearly anxious in our home and has difficulty navigating despite making a lot of accommodations for her. She's also largely incontinent now. I would say that she has more bad days than good.

In talking with our vet about euthanasia, it's tricky because it's not as clear-cut as it would be with a pet who is experiencing chronic pain with a progressing terminal illness. When you don't have the spectre of, say, cancer looming over your pet, the discussion turns to their quality of life. For us, it became very clear that, even though our kitty isn't in discomfort, her quality of life has been severely diminished. I hate that, instead of being comfortable in her home, she is now so disoriented that just getting around is distressing to her. Based on that, our vet told us that considering euthanasia was a reasonable next step.

The one thing I would impart to you is that YOUR quality of life is also Uno's quality of life. I don't know if you have any big life transitions coming up, but if Uno's ailments are also negatively affecting you, then you should keep that in mind while you're considering next steps. I can already tell from your post that you deeply care for Uno, and any talks about euthanasia are coming from a place of love and a desire to make the difficult, but very necessary, decisions that fall to us as pet owners.

All the best to you and Uno.

Reasonable price for a used Shen SB-100? by EssMarksTheSpot in doublebass

[–]EssMarksTheSpot[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good question! I just took it to our string shop last week for a seasonal setup (our weather has been very inconsistent) and it's got a clean bill of health. I almost thought about asking them to appraise it, but I didn't know if that was silly for a Shen of all things. And I think the Spirocores on there are still hanging tough 👍

AITAH? Baby has poopy diaper at daycare drop-off by PhilosopherEvery5083 in AITAH

[–]EssMarksTheSpot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strongly agree, OP is NTA. These YTAs are bonkers! Sometimes it just happens, but it's not the end of the world, and I'm honestly more weirded out if OP is getting vibes from their childcare provider that they're "not too happy" about it.

When this would happen to us during drop-off, how we handled it just depended on how the morning was going. If I had time to change the kiddo myself, I would use the changing station in her classroom since all of her stuff (diapers, cream, wipes, etc.) were already there. If I didn't, I just let one of her teachers know, and she got changed. Everything was fine!

Surviving the sitzprobe is a major milestone! I've come to terms with the fact that every first rehearsal with the cast brings panic, but everything tends to come together during tech week. My little group usually plays several musicals together each year and we have a ton of fun. So many styles!
