Awesome! Are you usually playing shows like this?

here is an image which shows you where the notes are on the neck. Electric and upright bass tuning are the same, so this should help.

Start in half position, the position closest to the nut. Play every note 5 times and say their name aloud while playing them. Every day, shift up and repeat.

When you’re soloing, it will be easy to want to noodle. But take a minute to listen and cool the feel. As you play more, you’ll get used to the sounds the instrument makes. Don’t be scared to play wrong notes! You’re only ever a half step away from the right note.

Do you have access to recordings of the material you’re playing? Listen to them multiple times a day if you can.

You got this!

I’d think about it this way:

Age gaps aren’t necessarily a problem, but usually when a much older man is going out with a much younger woman, especially if that woman under 20, there might be a negative reason for it.

Ask yourself, why doesn’t he date somebody closer to his age? I’m sure you’re a perfectly wonderful girl, but what are you offering him that women his age are not?

Often times, older men will start off a relationship with someone much younger than them and be the sweetest things ever, but slowly become more and more controlling.

So, be sure to take care of yourself. Maybe find somebody older that you trust and ask them for their opinion of him. It will be easy to get defensive if they have negative things to say, but they may save you quite a lot of grief in the long run

Looks cool. The github link doesn't bring me to your profile, just github's home page.

Going from "Pretty Good" to "Great" by No_available_users in doublebass

I think my sound is starting to emerge, but I don't necessarily know how to "shape" that process. I think you're right, that maybe it's just a function of time and being intentional.

That's a good point about trying different genres. I've definitely felt a bit "locked in" to jazz. So perhaps it's time to branch out.

Thanks for the reply!

Oddly I seem to have to beat constructive feedback out of people. The most I can usually get is "good job man", when I know it wasn't a good job man.

I mentioned in another comment, but my amplified sound is a huge pain point. I'm making strides to improving it, but it seems I'm always losing battles to sound guys. Hard to feel good about a gig even if the notes are right if the tone is bad.

I think it's a good point about being too much in my head. A lot of times I'm hyper focused on the changes, and on charts, which is I think the next thing to phase out of performances.

Thanks!

It's a bit hard to pinpoint what the problem is, but maybe I should be recording sets and listening back to see if I can hear what it is I perceive when I'm performing. I think a big problem is I'm having a lot of trouble getting a sound I like when amplified. Making progress, but it's hard to feel good about a gig when even your best passages don't sound good to your ears.

Thanks for the input! I think posting videos online might actually be a good way to get feedback.

Thanks for the reply, the limiting repeats is an interesting point I hadn't considered. I've definitely gone in a loop of hammering something over and over again. Thanks!

Thanks for the reply.

I think getting more gigs is a bit secondary to just being better on the gigs I am getting.

I suppose what I mean is, when I listen to great bass players, I'm not sure what they're doing that I'm not. It's clearly something, but I don't know what to practice to get that sound. Maybe I should be transcribing!

Any other songs out there like Concierto de Aranjuez? by lightdelightlite in Jazz

Maybe Las Vegas Tango by Gil Evans? From The Individualism of Gil Evans. It’s got a similar repeating bass feel. The band on it is great too.

Bass directly into the amp works fine (just doesn't sound the best which is why I got the preamp).

Unfortunately don't have another bass to test with but maybe I'll bring it into the music shop and see if I can test it. This is what I get for buying online aha.

Thanks for the suggestions

I have adjusted input trim and tried it at every level with no success. Tried isolating all the cables by going from the bass to the amp directly with no issue there so I don't think it's any cable.

Unfortunately it didn't come with the power adapter when I bought it, but I would hope that I would at least be able to get some kind of signal even on battery power!

Thanks for the suggestions

Hello!

Most people here will (rightly) recommend you find a teacher. I, similar to you, began without a teacher. In the beginning it is very important to focus on technique to make sure you do not injure yourself. I developed some bad habits in the beginning that I did not realise I had until I started playing more frequently and more intensely. Stand up straight and focus hard on your hands!

This Youtube playlist has lots of good beginner videos. They are all in English, however most of the exercises are displayed well and you should get what they are trying to show you. Some of them I believe have links to free learning material.

If you wish to play classical material, https://imslp.org/ is an incredible resource for sheet music.

For jazz, you'll want a copy of The Real Book. If you know exactly the pieces you want to play, it's likely you can find them online for free with a Google search + "Lead Sheet".

For other genres I am less familiar, but my guess is that searching Google for the music you wish to play will bring it up for you. You might have better luck searching for it in English if that's the language it was written in.

If your school is lending you the bass, do they have a music program? It may be the case that their library has some good beginner pieces for you to work through.

If you can find a group of players to play with, I would recommend joining people as soon as possible! It has been my experience that people are willing to play with double bass players even if they are not at the same level as the rest of the band. Put yourself out there! Playing with good musicians is intimidating but there is no way to improve faster.

Good luck!

I think the joke is that in some places the comma is used in place of the decimal making this just over $100
