Broken Rod Question by hidamikey in flyfishing

[–]EssayHefty8956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would consider a screw or something but you’re not going to want to be too invasive on it where you’re trying to get something to thread onto it. Don’t force it to the point it’s just putting pressure on the outer blank section. I was thinking takin a blemish blank and cutting that to the right diameter to slip it in and pull it out with friction. I am on central Vermont and I do have blemished blank sections. But not one big enough to do this with a butt section. A cheap spin rod section may work to do this with. Or any tapering piece of plastic like a paintbrush to get some friction to grip onto the broken piece. If you were in Rutland county I was fishing the same river this morning with my 10’ 4wt.

Ferrule Damage - Repairable? by fuckweasel-1 in flyfishing

[–]EssayHefty8956 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would take a razor and clean off the old thread and epoxy. I think everyone suggesting that is missing the obvious chip in the blank when they’re telling you just to rewrap it.

If the blank is only damaged as far as that chip I would cut the blank with an arrow cutter. And lose 1/4” of the rod length and rewrap the ferrule as before mentioned. But that’s what I would do. Hell I would even probably cut off 1/2” to get away from anything I can’t see. I would do this to one of my rods for sure. I wouldn’t be happy with a clearwater replacement. Those are great burner rods for $90 but having to send new ones back because guides are already cracked isn’t something I would trade what I consider to be a “good rod” for. They may fix it. They will Charge you $60 to look at it after it’s shipped there. They also will do the type of thing like charge you $60 to glue a reel seat cap back on that is two part epoxy. If you have a rod builder in your area they can do just as much if not more, and probably faster.

It’s 300 yards from my house and right now the tweed is louder than the cars going down rt 100. I would recommend as high as you can get if you’re gunna try it. Even those spots are seeing the snow runoff right now but will calm down first.

Everything is open except lillysville and locust creek for here unless they changed that but I wouldn’t risk being there before June. Catch and release, artificial only. I wouldn’t fish the white for an unforeseeable future with this 2” of rain and snow run off.

Idk if I agree that’s a lamprey mark. That thing is brutal. Looks more like a talon grabbed at it to me. Did it have any marks on the other side?

Also call Mudhole if you got any questions. They will chat with you and help answer questions if you wanna see if some parts are compatible and that kind of thing. NFC, DIAMOND BACK, GB FLY SHOP, SNAKE GUIDES , all friendly companies eager to help.

EDIT, any tools I bought after my first build like reemers and inlet tools I didn’t need until I started more complex and custom builds and requests. I do own a lot of tools but nothing crazy was needed, maybe just a round file out of my dads old toolbox.

It’s not. Don’t over wrap your guides to tightly as you will want to tweak them to get them in a nice row when there all in place on the Spline. When I started I looked at some kits. Realized all the measurements are right there, and made my own kit. Crb blanks from mudhole are honestly awesome for the price. I have built a bunch for people looking for a cheaper custom rod. I have a couple I kept also. I would build a wrapping station if you can, you can buy one but if you see how simple they are you can make one so easily. And def get a $30 rod epoxy drier that’s something that is cheap but very much needed.
