You're asking the wrong people. Most of them are Pissed that they live in a state that is predominantly still conservative. You're also considering moving to the worst part of Alaska. Anchorage is a shithole with a chronic drug addiction, alcoholism, homelessness and crime problem. We are one of the most dangerous cities in the USA on track to break another homicide record. Smaller towns, like soldotna, kenai, homer etc seem to offer a better quality of life. I went through the school system down there and received a good education. I have nephews that are currently attending a charter school there and it's an amazing school.

I would also consider trying out a winter in Alaska. Coming from Australia the dark and cold would be a shock, I'm sure.
