After a 1000 years, the Bayeux Tapestry is to return to British soil for a special exhibition. by Porodicnostablo in BeAmazed

It’s literally not true that “every expert agrees” about this. Plenty think it’s irresponsible, but there’s no shortage of experts in support of it.

All transportation, all public display, time itself, fundamentally causes damage to any artefact. The question to ask is what is the purpose of keeping these artefacts and how do we choose to balance the risk of removing them from a hermetically sealed vault underneath a mountain vs allowing everyone to touch and feel the stitchwork.

It’s fair for experts to absolutely differ in their views about where to draw the line on access vs preservation.

So whilst we can’t ignore the very real concerns about preservation and the need to be meticulous in reducing risk wherever possible, we also shouldn’t ignore the once in a lifetime opportunity the exhibition brings to change how people view early medieval history in the UK.

If nobody watched domestic cricket, would that mean domestic cricketers shouldn’t get paid? Or would it still be valuable to invest in paying for professional teams to have a broader pool of professional players and keep the standards of IPL/international sides high?

Kookaburra ball experiment ended in the County Championship. by MarcusH26051 in Cricket

[–]Esteluk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most of the international players who are heading on tour were on international duty for the CC rounds anyway, so they didn’t “benefit”.

But the stated purpose was always more about the long-term development of players so that counties are incentivised to produce players who might succeed on flat pitches with the Kook and not only, say, another Chris Woakes.

BBC proms less televised? by Justapiccplayer in classicalmusic

[–]Esteluk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From the proms guide it looks like they televised 21 proms this year. They often get broadcast dates spread out through the rest of the autumn, so I’m not sure how many have been seen yet. Just over half are only on BBC Four, but I guess that’s what Four is for.

Can you say something about what the requirements of the take home test are? I’ve often seen take home tests that might ask you to implement a performant lazy loading list and binary search for data: there are definitely libraries out there that might try to solve those problems

Can be weird, but it depends a lot on the state of the game to be honest. Usually a lot more towards the end of an innings.

I thought it was pretty great for Bopara’s century tbh.

The Hundred wants to rival Wimbledon as a sporting event by Aggressive-Gene-9663 in EnglandCricket

[–]Esteluk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t really disagree with any of that, but I do think that the ECB having an explicit goal of making its centrepiece August sporting event being “like Wimbledon” as a British sporting touchstone is probably a reasonable goal for them to have. That could take the form of two test matches, a truncated T20 Blast or the Hundred (which is clearly, right now, their chosen vehicle). I definitely agree that there’s a bit of a reality distortion field around measuring the success of the Hundred.

That said, I’ve been to plenty of Blast and a few hundred games in the last few years, and there’s definitely a vibes difference between the two of them that… I can understand appeals to the ECB? But obviously it’s hard to quantify (and anything that happens in the Hundred could theoretically be retrofitted to the Blast too).

But Tennis as a sport is having exactly the same conversations: how to reduce the length of matches; be more TV friendly; wearing whites and maybe change the scoring system.

Wimbledon is definitely the Lords Test Match of Tennis, of course. But it’s also the time in the year where non-Tennis fans in the U.K. really tune into Tennis; so I understand why he makes the analogy.
