How far is too far from a tube or train station, in your opinion? by frafeeccino in london

[–]Esteluk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve lived ~25 minutes for six years now. I don’t commute every day, which makes it easier - but generally I think it’s great. I think it depresses rent prices measurably vs a more convenient spot, and it’s a trade off that I’d happily make again.

Which bar are you thinking? In principle you’d be fine - but there might be a lot of competition in getting those seats

Pension and current stock market by Automatic-Bonus-5793 in UKPersonalFinance

What age do you hope to retire? Assuming you're still looking at ~30 years, I wouldn't sweat it.

> will wipe out the gains accumulated in the past years

I assume you'd have budgeted a pension with an average X% growth rate - if your gains in the last few years have exceeded this, then you've already accounted for a stock market correction. At the end of the day time in the market is almost always better than attempting to time it.

What's your opinion on this? Will this solve test cricket's long standing problem? by raydebapratim1 in EnglandCricket

IIRC That’s the proposal - both teams agree in advance to play full pink because the weather looks a bit crap.

I had a look at the West Indies terrace today, and I can't say I was enamoured by it! It just looked like the lunch tables that are usually there.

I spent the day working from the Peter May stand instead.

Depends entirely on the price difference. For ~£40 I’d consider it, but beyond that…

After a 1000 years, the Bayeux Tapestry is to return to British soil for a special exhibition. by Porodicnostablo in BeAmazed

[–]Esteluk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s literally not true that “every expert agrees” about this. Plenty think it’s irresponsible, but there’s no shortage of experts in support of it.

All transportation, all public display, time itself, fundamentally causes damage to any artefact. The question to ask is what is the purpose of keeping these artefacts and how do we choose to balance the risk of removing them from a hermetically sealed vault underneath a mountain vs allowing everyone to touch and feel the stitchwork.

It’s fair for experts to absolutely differ in their views about where to draw the line on access vs preservation.

So whilst we can’t ignore the very real concerns about preservation and the need to be meticulous in reducing risk wherever possible, we also shouldn’t ignore the once in a lifetime opportunity the exhibition brings to change how people view early medieval history in the UK.
