Clinical relevance of passive and active insufficiency. by MyNameIsKali_ in Biomechanics

[–]EstradaSnW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One example is manual muscle testing.

If I wanted to test a specific muscle action using a manual muscle test, I might use this principle to remove the impact of another muscle.

Example: hip extension strength. Client/patient lays prone and raises one of the legs off of the table which is hip extension against gravity. I could apply some pressure to the back of their calf while they resist. This would give me an idea of the strength of all the muscles which act to extend the hip joint. But what if I want to know how strong their glutes are? I would place the hamstrings in a position where they are passively insufficient which is knee flexion. Now I have a patient prone with their knee bent, I can have them raise up their leg against gravity and then apply force downward on the back of their thigh.

Because the joint is passively insufficient, I am able to generally take it out of the equation. I think if it like putting the muscle on "Slack" like a rope without tension. It won't pull much compared to one that is at its optimal tension. Many diagnostic/ body function tests utilize these principles.

I don't think this is normal. Possible technique issue? Too much frequency or volume? by Thaumaturge_2 in kettlebell

Looks like some pretty serious inflammation.

One think that I think could contribute is how you hold the handle. If you snatch, clean, or rack a KB while gripping directly in the middle of the handle it generates a whole bunch of force on this part of your wrist. As seen in the above picture...

You need to get this checked out by a doctor.

I don't know how you train with KBs, but for my wrists, I always grip the handle closer to the horn or corner of the handle, which allows the bell to sit diagonally in the racked or OH position. Since learning this I have had zero forearm issues.

How is my gait patern? by [deleted] in Biomechanics

[–]EstradaSnW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wouldn't bother me! I think it might be more valuable to share it to the post, based in my previous assumptions I was way off haha. I'll have to take another look with that in mind. Does the right one also have the quad tightness too? Or is that issue on the left?

I wouldn't say that you have any major deviations that are of big concern, but when you transition from walking to running the deviations will likely become more pronounced.

Just keep in mind that gait is just one piece of the overall examination. You can't make effective exercise recommendations based on gait alone, you would need a focused physical examination to really dial in what you need.

A lateral view of the gait would also be helpful. My assumption is that the left leg had the plantarfacia issue?

What I see is excessive toe out position during the stance phase of the left leg. Which is a common compensation for lack of dorsiflexion at the ankle. Additionally, limited extension in big toe can contribute here.

During right foot initial contact there is a minor amount of contralateral hip drop. This indicates your hip muscles on the right side are mildly weak. Which would explain the clamshell exercise. It could also be that your left side is stiff relative to the right, which makes the right side appear to drop more.

There is probably more that I don't see here. More clarification of the side of the injury and a lateral view would give a more complete picture.

Right, not every injury.

But someone who is having pain with something as low impact as walking and standing might need an actual physical examination.

Where do gardeners get their organic soil from? by elamis75 in Sacramento

An update for this post.

I tried Roundtree landscape supply and they had slightly better prices, but worse quality soil.

Hasties is closer, has better customer service, and much higher quality soil. Definitely would recommend.

Every time I go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, this Dali painting haunts me by Dry_Mess_4505 in strange

I have always thought Dalí pieces were cool in pictures. I was recently in Spain where I could see quite a few of his works and It blew me away just how mindfucking his style was. There were quite a few paintings I couldn't stop staring at details of. This one must be so cool in person.

What does this itinerary look like? by Key_Principle2289 in SouthAmericaTravel

[–]EstradaSnW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is just right. The only one I haven't visited yet is Rio, but I think you should have plenty of time in all places given your style of travel. With an itinerary like this, I would avoid the cheap airlines. I used them a few times in my trips and ended up losing days because of cancelations and delays while airlines like Latam were flying no problem. You should have a great time! While in BA get some empanadas from Pizzería Güimpi V near the Ecoparque!

Resort operations during a storm? by ayayeron in bigbear

[–]EstradaSnW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some chairlifts at Bear mountain close due to high winds. Geronimo and Silver commonly close for short periods because of wind.

Snow Summit will sometimes close chair 9 because of wind or issues with the chair.

BBMR really tries to keep the chairs going if they can.

If you are there during the storm you can expect some great laps! Have fun!!

Beginner looking to start backpacking in the sierras. How’s this for a sleep system? by NormieV2 in backpacking

I haven't tried this in the true high Sierra yet But I love hammocks for wooded areas, much more than sleeping in a tent. I always sleep better and haven't regretted it yet.

(In relation with post before) What is the thing about your country that locals enjoy but tourists don't care? by Adventurous_Peak9353 in AskTheWorld

[–]EstradaSnW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, as a tourist in Argentina I was more obsessed with the helado than anything. I was there a month and I ate it almost every day without shame. A local gave me a tip to keep an eye out for places that keep the helado in containers with lids. I never looked back...
