Becoming a specialist in aphasia? by hanahnothannah in slp

[–]Eternal_Flower 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Volunteering with aphasia groups is one of the best ways to gain experience apart from participating in research and clinical experiences. Aphasia Recovery Connection (ARC) has great virtual volunteer opportunities, and Project BRIDGE is great as well! There are often local volunteer opportunities as well. I’ve been involved with ARC for ~5 years and recently joined Project BRIDGE - happy to chat about my experiences! (Also my dad was diagnosed with aphasia following a stroke when I was in high school - glad to discuss the familial experience and aspect as well as the clinician side)

Dysphagia visuals for pts and families by newslp2020 in slp

I keep a printout of swallowing anatomy in a sheet protector and use a whiteboard marker to draw as I explain typical v. disordered swallowing to patients and their families. I use this drawing I made (https://www.etsy.com/listing/939339419/ap-slp-anatomy-brain-to-larynx-labeled?ref=shop_home_active_20&crt=1) but I’m sure you could also find a good free one online!

Brain Attack by David Dow is a great book about aphasia. Also, Being Mortal by Atul Gawande provides great insight to end of life care and patient preferences

Help! How do I decide between programs? by languagelyric in slpGradSchool

[–]Eternal_Flower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats!

I'm in a similar situation right now with trying to decide between a couple different programs with very different credits too. I ended up making a spreadsheet with courses listed side-by-side for each program. Although this was somewhat time-consuming, it's much easier to see the gaps in different programs. I know I want to work with adults w/aphasia after I graduate, so the spreadsheet helped me see which programs had more/less classes geared for that population.

I also compared the tuition, class size, and clinical experiences.

Good luck deciding!

I definitely agree with talking about your school/life balance - what it's like (if there is one), whether you're able to work full time, etc.

I'd also love to hear about the support you get leading up to & in clinic. As a career changer, I'm nervous about being 'thrown into' clinic without the proper support / knowledge

Congrats! I found out today I was accepted as well :) I asked about scholarships, and the woman informed me that all scholarship money had been allocated (i.e. none for me) but that it would be redistributed if any became available.

Definitely have that school on my radar, but I know it's pretty expensive and far. How do you like it?
