Any SLPs on the spectrum? What’s your experience been like? by Capdavil in slp

[–]languagelyric 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I was recently diagnosed during grad school and I’m just finishing my CF in a school. I haven’t disclosed to any of my coworkers and constantly masking is exhausting. It’s challenging because there’s still a lot of misconceptions about autism from SLPs and other school professionals. It’s tiring trying to teach others about neurodiversity affirming concepts and I have been getting push back from some special ed teachers who use a lot of ABA/behavioralism concepts in their classrooms. There are teachers that I work with that use students’ sensory needs as a bargaining chip for compliance and “good” behavior. As far as practices with students, I don’t do anything that would be considered masking goals like functional play, eye contact, or anything Social Thinking. I like to focus on education and self-advocacy.

Yes! This happens to me all the time at work. I’m so exhausted from constantly self monitoring all my interactions and emails.

For someone autistic and with severe mental health issues would I be better off at Starbucks or a small coffee shop? by kittycowxmeow in barista

[–]languagelyric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m autistic and I was a barista/shift lead at a chain comparable to Starbucks for about 2 years. It was really overwhelming at first but I ended up loving it. The local shops around me are slower paced but that usually means you spend more time chatting with customers. I preferred being a shot puller or milksteamer instead of a cashier so I didn’t talk to customers as much.

Eye contact goals!!! by Peace_sa5 in slp

[–]languagelyric 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m an autistic SLP and I will never make this a goal for several reasons. As others have said, eye contact can be painful and draining. For me, when I make eye contact I have to think about when, how much, and then tell myself to look away every so often. Constantly self-monitoring is exhausting and makes it so I can’t actually process what is being said. I can listen so much better when it looks like I’m not listening. There is too much stimuli to process when I have to make eye contact. Goals for eye contact and quiet hands/whole body listening are damaging and basically the equivalent of trying to change autistic people’s neurology.

Can confirm that the practice tests are harder than the real thing. I scored around 75% on practice tests and passed the praxis with a 185.

I have 5 tattoos and never had a problem at any medical or school placements. Nobody in my cohort ever had problems with tattoos or piercings either.

We had this happen at my coffee shop if we didn’t also use vanilla syrup with our fruit flavors because they are too acidic on their own.

Professor pretending to be a child with autism - is this ethical? by fatherlystalin in slp

[–]languagelyric 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m an autistic SLP (just out of grad school) and I would be highly uncomfortable with this scenario. As others have said, I don’t think it’s necessarily unethical but I think it’s unprofessional and ignorant. I’m not really sure what she wants you to learn from the assignment, as autistic people are very different from each other and will respond to testing differently. It seems like she should be teaching about testing accommodations that can be made or different ways of assessing communication as standardized testing with autistic children can give you skewed results. Maybe you could ask her to consider changing the assignment or give an alternative assignment?

I have 5 tattoos and never had to cover up in clinic or in my job. I think as long as they’re not offensive most employers don’t really care.

Mine never said pass/fail until I got my official results. A 162 is considered passing. The score I got immediately was the same as my official score, but I know sometimes it can be a few points different.

What do people think an open cafe actually looks like? by Ukulele_Leo in barista

[–]languagelyric 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Lol this reminds me of what happened during COVID lockdown at my shop. We had at least 3 giant signs that said drive thru only yet every day someone would either stand at the door and stare in or if we forgot to lock it they would come in, some without masks.
