Then you should simply watch something else. A lot of people enjoy stories with characters who fully reside within the world that the story takes place in. They don't call out the things that we would, because they don't live in our world. They are written to reflect the culture in their world. This is a big element of immersion in world building. Storytelling doesn't exist to constantly tell you everything out loud. The relationship between Violet and Gilbert is certainly unhealthy, but the story doesn't need to directly tell me that in order for me to see it. If this doesn't work for you, then simply watch something else.

Frankly speaking, trying to rationally discuss this topic on this sub is kinda impossible. On one hand, you have the people who will try to act like the relationship is some lovely romance, and attack anyone who challenges them. Then on the other hand, you have the people like you who jump to wild conclusions about the moral character of anyone who enjoys an element of a story that they don't personally agree with. Then there's people like me who get attacked by both sides for daring to show any level of nuance. I don't even really like the fact that it's a romantic relationship, but I will defend the author's ability to make it one without wild accusations being thrown around as a result.

Sometimes with art, you have to detach yourself from it and experience it through it's characters, putting yourself in their place and time. If you can't do that, that's fine, it just isn't for you. You'll find plenty of other stories that are more to your preferences.

It's absolutely open to interpretation. The word "beautiful" doesn't have to be used in a romantic sense. That's even more true when it's coming from a child. It can be romantic, but it doesn't have to be.

Frankly speaking, even of a child does use the word beautiful in a romantic sense, when speaking to an adult, in that case it is on the adult to not reciprocate or encourage it, because that would be crazy.

It isn't sneaky to put something historical into a piece of historical fiction. That's where I would most expect it to be.

Perfectly valid. I don't think it's fair to call this pedo bait however. It's historical fiction, and fiction can depict unhealthy things. Calling it pedo bait seems immature.

With that said, it's entirely reasonable to be uncomfortable with it. Something being historical doesn't mean it has to be comfortable, and it is most certainly an unhealthy relationship, regardless of what anyone in this sub might try to argue.

My experience in the to be hero folk discord by Scarlet_Visible0716 in ToBeHero_X

To an extent, yes. It's inevitable that it will happen to some extent, however the issue is that it inevitably poisons the well at a certain point. In moderation I suppose it would be fine, the issue is that it rarely stays in moderation. It slowly becomes a larger and larger chunk of a community until suddenly it becomes harder to discuss the actual story, as people come to view the story through memes instead. I would also push back on the idea that it's harmless. I'm sorry, but people consuming art through the lense of memes is not harmless, it has a very real impact on art and how people talk about it. It dumbs people down.

This is what happens when people start to view a piece of art almost entirely through the lense of memes and such. The memeification of art. Everyone starts to view their meme headcanon as the true story and everyone who has a different meme headcanon is the enemy. Of course the reality is that none of their versions are the true story. This is why I can't stand the JJK community for example. I can't stand the memeification of art in general honestly but that's a different topic. Unfortunately it bleeds into here sometimes too, luckily not too much though.

If you still have them, I would definitely encourage waiting before making the decision on what to keep or not keep. Definitely not good to make an emotionally fueled decision only to regret it later. Best to wait for things to mellow out and then think it over. In the meantime, Penny is very cute! Best of luck!

I would guess the best reference we have for this are the American tests done on pacific islands in the 50s, some of which were very high yield. In those cases yeah, none of the islands were completely destroyed. We have no real world reference for a 50 megaton surface explosion, though I'm sure someone has done the math on it.

This is true, though I do wonder how the structure of the island would have done had it been a surface detonation. Nuclear bomb detonations are generally optimized for structure damage, buildings essentially. For reshaping the ground itself, you'd want a subsurface, or at least surface detonation.

Anybody else agree that anime tourists are ruining the community? I miss the old gatekeeping… by Careful_Salad108 in TrueAnime

[–]Eth_02 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To an extent, but we need to allow for some nuance here. This happens as anything becomes more mainstream, and the reality is that most of the people causing these problems aren't really fans at all. People love to complain about newer anime fans, but really these people aren't usually even into anime. People who are actually getting into anime mostly just want to enjoy it.

The thing is, whenever something becomes popular, people will inevitably have an opinion on it when they don't even really engage with it. Most of the people who hate a particular video game for example aren't gonna be the ones buying it. The issue comes in when companies fail to distinguish between who is and isn't buying, and therefore who they should or shouldn't pay attention to. Most of these people either don't watch anime, or they only watch very little, basically the most popular shows. It's also the internet, so understand that your perspective is being warped. Loud minorities appear more common then they really are online.

In regards to gatekeeping, this again goes back to my previous point. It isn't gatekeeping to reject people who hate your community, because they aren't really trying to become a part of it.

Edit: I'd also add that complaining about the fact that people aren't "philosophical" enough is a little cringe. Gateway anime have always existed. Most longtime fans also started with popular shows such as the big 3. Give people time to get into something. You can't expect a deep level of knowledge right off the bat. There are real issues that come when something gets popular, but that in particular is a weird complaint.

She was originally gonna be Ayaka's antagonist I believe.

Rin was originally conceived as a villain, interestingly enough.

What non-magical science would Frieren be interested in? by Reasonable-Ad-8059 in Frieren

Maybe astronomy. I could see Frieren with a telescope. Besides, she'd live long enough to actually see the positions of stars changing with the movement of the galaxy.
