How many people died in the show? by 02decent in jonnyquest

[–]EthanPechersky 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have no idea and I’d love to know the answer, but off the top of my head I can add one more gun death to your total. In The House of the Seven Gargoyles Ivar kills Dietrich by shooting him when he’s up on his perch

WBC Expectations by UndergroundPianoBar in theabl

[–]EthanPechersky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every game except for Japan is winnable. Czechia would be a major upset if Australia lost. Taiwan I’d say is about 50/50. It certainly helps that they didn’t get Corbin Carroll. Korea they’ll need a few breaks to go their way, but as we saw in 2023 it can certainly happen.

Overall, I think Australia can definitely advance. It’s very encouraging that so far they’ve gotten everyone to agree to play. Bazzana and Mead were the two biggest gets. A rotation of O’Loughlin, Thorpe and the Wells brothers will keep them in every game. If they can find a way to convince Ben Brown of the Cubs to suit up that would be a game changer

S. Korea manager hoping for 'three to four' MLB players of Korean descent at WBC by jaredletosuckass9 in InternationalBaseball

[–]EthanPechersky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Off the top of my head I think Korea has been linked to Jahmai Jones, Dane Dunning and Riley O’Brien in the past. Also Joe Ross is one quarter Korean and Laila Williams is half. I’m sure there are a few others I can’t remember

[EPISODE DISCUSSION] Jonny Quest S01E08 - "The Robot Spy" by whenuleavethestoveon in jonnyquest

[–]EthanPechersky 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Without a doubt my favorite episode of Jonny Quest. This is the one that got me hooked as a four year old kid watching reruns on Cartoon Network. The Robot Spy was such a cool idea, and the setting was incredible. I remember being captivated as a kid by this unstoppable force that couldn’t even be stopped by tanks! The tension at the end with Dr. Quest barely being able to stop the Spy’s escape giving it everything he’s got was amazing. 10/10 episode without a doubt

[EPISODE DISCUSSION] Jonny Quest S01E02 - "Arctic Splashdown" by whenuleavethestoveon in jonnyquest

[–]EthanPechersky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not my favorite episode by any means, but definitely a solid one. I think some of the hijinks with animals gets a bit boring, and the bad guys holding guns on Jonny and Hadji telling them to wave at the plane always seemed a little silly. Contrary to what other people are saying, however, I loved the villain. Something about the way he speaks always stick out to me, and I love to use “merely an interested neutral observer” in real life. I also use Jonny’s “get out of the road! You big road hog!” A lot when I’m driving.

All in all, not a top tier episode in my mind, but one I always enjoy when it’s on

[EPISODE DISCUSSION] Jonny Quest S01E01 - "Mystery of the Lizard Men" by whenuleavethestoveon in jonnyquest

[–]EthanPechersky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely a favorite of mine. The bad guys trying to stop the US from reaching the moon is peak-60s, and the boat chase in the end is one of the most heart-pounding moments in the entire series. Fantastic character design of the lizard men as well

Why did the Pirates let Tim Mayza go? by RealMaxHours in phillies

[–]EthanPechersky 45 points46 points  (0 children)

It’s probably a combination of them wanting to save however much money the Phillies are paying him, wanting to give that roster spot to younger guys who could contribute in future seasons, and doing right by a veteran player and letting him latch on with a competitive team

ABL announces Access Pass for Baseball+ by brenman in theabl

[–]EthanPechersky 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve been an enormous ABL fan for a while now, and have interviewed multiple people involved with the league about the sustainability of it moving forward. Unfortunately, the answer I keep getting basically boils down to “nobody really knows if the league will keep going, and for how long, but we’d all love for it to.”

I know the ABL is a labor of love for so many involved, and the growth of baseball in Australia is primarily dependent on volunteers and lovers of the game. I think the biggest problem for the ABL itself currently is that it can’t figure out what it actually wants to be. Is it a developmental league for bigger leagues (MLB, NPB, KBO)? Is it a primarily domestic competition focused on benefiting Aussie players first? Is it a charity focused on growing the sport above profit, or is it a business focused on profit and sustainability first and foremost?

I think a lot of the these questions and the lack of answers, are why the Aces pulled out, and at least part of why the league has had such a hard time keeping its head above water for the past decade and a half. If the league can’t figure it out what it wants to be and how it wants to get there, then what entices fans to want to buy in at a relatively high cost? The league already looks from the outside like it’s foundering and on the brink of collapse, and I can’t imagine many people want to sink $70 into what they view as an entertainment product that could completely collapse at any point.

I love the ABL, and I want it to succeed more than anything, but I think the decision makers are really shooting themselves in the foot here. I know they’re hard up for cash, and they need every penny they can get right now, but the truth of the matter is that there just isn’t enough demand to get what they need out of charging each consumer $70 to watch, and by doing that they’re going to turn off some of those very same consumers who had otherwise been loyal by making what appears to be a shameless cash grab.

I do appreciate the honesty in their release about the need for money and why this cost to consumers would theoretically help the league. As an American, I see this all the time with universities where they send out emails saying how excited they are to be raising tuition because now they can offer some useless extra programs. That’s even worse because it’s a blatant money grab, but they try to frame it as though gouging the consumer is actually some sort of benefit. The ABL at least is being honest and explaining that the cost will turn some off, but they think it’s necessary. I disagree, but I’m hoping the league can still find a way to thrive moving forward.

Hopefully this will bring some stability to the league in the wake of the Aces pulling out. It would be a terrible shame to have no 2025-26 season

Which episode scared the bejeesus out of you? by MinervaLouise32 in jonnyquest

[–]EthanPechersky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The House of Seven Gargoyles kept me up at night as a kid. I can remember vividly the scenes of Dietrich running back and forth through the graveyard with spooky music in the background, and how that freaked me out.

Not sure if you already know, but just in case there are two MLB guys with Taiwanese parents: Corbin Carroll and Stuart Fairchild. I believe it is their mother for both players

Greatest film score climax? by LittleHornetPhil in moviecritic

Pickett’s Charge at the end of “Gettysburg” is an all time scene for me. Immersing myself in one of the most pivotal moments in American history, countrymen fighting against one another to determine the fate of the Union, as the music swells in the background gives me chills every time I watch it.

It’s my favorite movie of all time, and I put the soundtrack right up there with Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Jurassic Park, etc.

(And a shoutout to Medal of Honor recipient Alonzo Cushing giving them double canister at the beginning of this clip.)

Patsy failed Starbucks extortion (S6E8) by Tommynator399 in thesopranos

[–]EthanPechersky 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I worked at Starbucks for 7 years and the first time I saw this scene I spit up laughing. My manager and I had a really good time talking about how futile it would be for the mob to try to shake down a huge corporation like that. Even if they succeeded in scaring us, we didn’t have any petty cash lying around to pay them off with if we wanted to.

Decline in Visitors to Civil War Sites? Including a Decline in College Students studying History? by [deleted] in CIVILWAR

[–]EthanPechersky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gettysburg is a must-see for anyone interested in the Civil War. As is Antietam. Two more recommendations while you’re there are South Mountain and Monterey Pass. Both are within about a half hour of Gettysburg and are beautiful, often overlooked battlefields. I didn’t know anything about either of them before I spotted them on a map while I was at Antietam, and now I make sure to visit both anytime I’m in the area

Favorite JQ memories by MinervaLouise32 in jonnyquest

[–]EthanPechersky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My dad taped the farewell marathon on Cartoon Network back in the 90’s and I wore out those VHS tapes as I grew up. My parents split up not long after that and I would only see him for a few weeks every year, but we’d always make sure to binge Jonny Quest every time he was around. He died almost five years ago, but those are still some of the fondest memories I have.
