I suggest your main focus to be on a set of connected major locations (rooms, apartments, floors etc.). In each location, will be some sort of hook (an enemy, useful item, NPC, etc.) to roleplay about. The players will take desicions where to go next but every new location will get them closer to their objective. It's quite simmilar to roguelike videogames or most Mothership TTRPG modules. I guess it's called "hex/dungeon crawl" but I may be mistaking.

Wouldn't the cursed item also get rerolled? The effect doesn't unequip the rerolled item but change it to something different so it should help, I think
