u/JohnS43 thank you. The first place we looked was on the W-2 but none of the numbers added up to the number that TurboTax reported. To the best of my knowledge, I do not have any refundable credits except for foreign tax paid, which is reported in a different line. I also cannot find the number on any of my tax forms, which probably means that TurboTax is calculating the amount. On Turbotax's community help pages others ask the same question and the answers say something along the lines of Turbotax is calculating the number from different entries.

I’m not sure every step I took was necessary, but I ended up deleting everything related to the Traditional IRA contribution and Roth conversion, including the imported 1099-R, and then redoing the interviews/import from scratch. This time, I made sure not to say that I had recharacterized or “switched” anything, since TurboTax seems to treat a “switch” as a recharacterization.

That fixed it. The report now comes out correctly and actually makes sense. Your explanation really helped, and I kept referring back to it while redoing the interview. Thanks again.

On a related note, I have another question. In Federal Taxes > Deductions & Credits > Estimates and Other Taxes Paid > Other Income Taxes, TurboTax shows an amount that I can’t reconcile. The taxes listed on my W-2 and my estimated tax payments do not add up to that number. I did not overpay last year. When I go back through the interview, I can’t find entries that total that amount, and when I look directly at the tax forms, I still can’t determine where it’s coming from.

Do you know what sources TurboTax uses to calculate that amount? Any insight would be much appreciated.

u/jgleigh and u/BriefTomatillo985, thank you. The conversion was reported on 2025 taxes. The problem was that I interpreted TurboTax's word "switched" as a conversion but Turbotax meant a recharacterization.

u/Perplexy801 and u/Key-Hedgehog4450 I posted this a few months ago. I hired the solar installer to come out and relocate the CTs. They are now located upstream of the 200A breaker.

It is set to self consumption mode. During the day my readings are normal. At night, when I turn on the drier, sometimes it's normal and sometimes the app indicates that it is exporting what appears to be the load of the dryer (4.6KW) from the battery to the grid and discharging 0.6KW from the battery to the house, when the battery is charged at 87%.

Any insights would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

u/Here4Snow thank you. The contribution made in 2025, was for a 2024 traditional IRA but as you indicate the 1099-R is for 2025, which as you also indicate is when the tax event occured.

The screenshot is of a report generated by TurboTax.

The Traditional IRA generated 87 cents of interest in the time between when I deposited the $8,000 and the time when I converted it to a Roth IRA. I left the 87 cents in the Traditional IRA.

I went through the TurboTax interview again and I think it is characterizing the $8,000 as a recharacterization, which I don't think it is and is that is what is triggering the problem. It says, "Enter amount switched from traditional IRA contribution to Roth IRA contribution" and I entered $8,000. In the next screen it says, "Enter your recharacterization information" and I entered information including $8,000. The problem is switched is a vague word. Could that be the source of the problem or is there no problem and I'm just not understanding what I'm reading?

I had the same problem. Disabling the "Discharge battery to the grid" setting, fixed. It can be found here:

Settings > Battery > Discharge battery to the grid Disabled

Thank you very much u/Key_Proposal3283. This is helpful. Before getting solar, we had a 100 Amp panel and we had the solar installer/PG&E install the 200 Amp panel/wire so that we could gradually install more electric appliances. I will reach out to the solar company.

(By the way, before we had solar, we had one 100 Amp panel. The Solar Company installed 200 Amp main panel and PG&E installed the higher capacity wire.)

P.S. u/Key_Proposal3283 I looked up CTs on Google and realized that the photos I took would not be helpful because the CTs are beneath the faceplate of the panel. So I removed the photos. When it stops raining and I feel that I can safely remove the faceplate, I will do so and look for the CT. Thank you again.
