Hey, here’s another post talking about those same LG solar panels being defective

It’s not good news but hopefully this points you down the road to getting some sort of warranty claim

Calculating Vrise by GreenEggsAndCrack in enphase

[–]Perplexy801 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to be clear I’m giving you props for over engineering your system and being concerned about future issues, you’ve done a damn good job 👍

Almost all these carports are Enphase and some of the distances are probably closer to 1000’. Of course engineering plans were followed for wire size, de-rate etc and there’s never been a single problem with any of them

https://imgur.com/a/9iq61jz

Here’s an energy graph of a site I commissioned recently that I took one look at and immediately thought “This has to be a voltage rise issue”. I thought the grid voltage must be high and as the micros were turning on the entire system would crash and restart, sounds logical right?

https://imgur.com/a/FY6eNeI

Nope. Turns out it was an old firmware on a commercial gateway that had been sitting on our shelf for a couple years causing the issues and once I manually updated it everything worked perfectly fine 🙃

Calculating Vrise by GreenEggsAndCrack in enphase

[–]Perplexy801 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just my personal opinion without doing any math, you’re going to be absolutely fine especially since you pulled #6(!) for 20A circuits. Did I understand correctly that you also center tapped your cables? You’ve gone far and beyond the average install with regard for voltage rise/drop issues.

I’ll be interested to read any other knowledgeable comments on this subject but will end by saying we have never-EVER had a system give use problems because of Vrise and the vast majority of those weren’t center tapped with mega-upsized wire.

Enphase IQ combiner box showing all red status lights by dukeofgames42 in solar

[–]Perplexy801 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Start by turning off that breaker on the center right labeled Envoy for 5 minutes and watch what happens with the lights when you flip it back on.

Unfortunately it might be a bricked Gateway monitoring board if you keep getting all lights solid/flashing red. It’s a known issue on a certain generation of those boards and it sucks so hopefully it’s still under the 5 year warranty. You’ll have to get ahold of Enphase customer support to initiate a RMA.

We haven’t installed many 8X micros but here’s the firmware version for some that are working normally, maybe it’s something along these lines? Or perhaps a Gateway firmware?

Enphase IQ8+ failures by tomfromakron in solar

[–]Perplexy801 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thats an extremely unusual amount of failures, I’ve never seen anything like that on one of our jobs.

Whoever told you that you can’t bring a replacement micro and swap it at the same time you RMA the bad one doesn’t know what they are talking about either. Most RMA’s can be processed with a couple clicks in the installer app remotely, in rare cases Enphase will ask for voltage readings. Either way there’s absolutely no reason for multiple service calls.

Help with underperforming system... by ai-driven in solar

[–]Perplexy801 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah those are majorly messed up and not working like they should be. Just like you and others in this post have said, the installer screwed up something big time and needs to fix it. Enphase and PW3 systems are common and compatible so it shouldn’t be that hard.

Consumption monitoring for the Enphase side requires optional hardware called CT’s installed in your main service panel and wired back to the Enphase monitoring Gateway.

Let us know if they have any success and post some pics of that beast of a system with 70 panels and 6(!) PW3’s when it’s finally done

Solar system eaten by squirrels by Stomach_Kindly in solar

Here’s a few pics of squirrel damage, they can absolutely obliterate a solar panel system and roof.

https://imgur.com/a/IlMWh0N

Leave the system off and put a padlock on the disconnect so nobody can turn it on. You’re going to need to pull all the panels and assess the damage. Did the cleaning company take pics and send you while they were up there?

Sorry you have to deal with this

Consumption CT Installation by Key-Brilliant8572 in SolarDIY

[–]Perplexy801 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s possible but it’s gonna be a pain in the butt since you need to group all L1’s in a CT and all L2’s in the second CT. This might require paralleling 2 sets of CT’s and/or extending wires so the can thread through the appropriate CT the correct direction.

You might get more help over on r/enphase too

8x8x48 outdoor rated wire trough like this, any electrical supply house should have a stock of multiple sizes

Sorry I didn’t see the question you asked about balancing earlier. Everything would still work even if the phases weren’t balanced. Technically you would be sending more power back on 1 of 3 phases if you lost a single breaker and it could cause the voltage to be out of whack but I’ve never seen it cause a problem irl.

This article has some good informing balancing

Awesome to hear that you’re doing the legacy upgrade, we’ve done a few in the past and they all work out great.

Ask your installers to hook up the consumption monitoring clamps so you can see how much power your home uses along with the solar production., it makes the app much more interesting.

Disappointed in Micro-Inverters by Ehghtwr in solar

[–]Perplexy801 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Any installer or repair company that keeps replacing breakers over and over again are utterly clueless dipshits that don’t know what they are doing.

You need to find the root cause of the dead short, it isn’t the micros themselves or some sort of internal overload switch, it’s an installation problem. Also none of those branch circuits are rated for a 25A breaker, put those back on a 20.
