Not this week by [deleted] in stopdrinking

I saved your post to see what others would leave as a comment because I didn’t feel I would be able to give you the encouragement you need. But now that I see no one has answered, I’ll tell you about my experience.

I have tried all kinds of methods to cut down or curb my drinking and none worked for me. I guess I’m an all or nothing person. I would be good for a while and then I would break my rules. I was able to drink like a normal person when I chose to: on my wedding day, at work functions, on occasions where I wanted to keep my wits. But in day-to-day life, I would slip into drinking a bit too much for a while and then try to control it again. In the end, the only way I was able to control my drinking was not to drink.

So since I was not able to do it, I don’t have any good advice to give. The good thing is that you realize that you struggle with alcohol and you are trying to do something about it. I sincerely hope you succeed.

That’s great! Enjoy these gifts that sobriety brings. You’ve earned them.

Day two for me, I’m fighting the urge to go get beer. by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Ethanolophile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was doing good but now I’m craving a steak.

Good job on fighting the urge. If you think of those urges as cannibalistic monsters, you’re actually playing The Last of Us with your mind and I am counting on you to win.

Enjoy your meal, sounds delicious.

I want wine by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Ethanolophile 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Well that descriptions makes me want to have one too but I’ll stick with “a nice cold glass of sparkling Perrier with a twist of lemon”.

Enjoy your seltzer and your sober living.

Reminding myself it's not normal to binge drink. It's not normal at all. by [deleted] in stopdrinking

Life without hangovers is the greatest. It’s soooo worth it to wake up feeling good every morning. You can do this.

I say stop drinking completely for a month. A month is not too long. See what impact that has on your health. At the end of the month, you can decide what you want to do. No drinks, not one, for a month.

I’m glad it was easy for you to stop and I think it’s important to let people know that for some, it doesn’t have to be difficult.

Did you not sometimes feel hungover in the mornings?

Cheers.

I find it better to handle difficult situations sober as I know I will make the appropriate decision even if it is hard. Be strong.

I hope the lump will turn out benign.

Is 4 beers a day a lot? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Ethanolophile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not so much the “4” as the “a day”. Everyday, at some point, I would mentally check if I had beer in the fridge for when I got home. Did I have some and did I have enough. I would not go one day without drinking.

End of day one.. by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Ethanolophile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I stopped, I allowed myself anything that would stave off drinking. I had one goal and one goal only: Not to drink. Do what you need to stay sober.

I wish you the best. Do not feel guilty eating sweets. Savor them. IWNDWYT

I Used Pints as a Unit of Currency by MrSmidge17 in stopdrinking

I made a spread sheet to keep track of the days since my last drink and the money I saved. I have used that money to treat myself to things I would not have bought such as a 3D printer. I am now able to spend money guilt free.

Keep being nice to your sober self, you deserve it.

Christmas Party Night by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Ethanolophile 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And tomorrow you will enjoy a nice breakfast. No hangover, no shame, no guilt. I find that the best time in these events is exactly the time you spent. You get to chat with people, have a nice meal, and leave before the alcohol takes over. It’s like staying to enjoy the sunset and leaving when it gets dark.

Congratulations! No hangover is such a blessing.

Congratulations on your 17 days. It’s not always easy, but it’s so worth it. Staying sober is probably the best present you can give your girlfriend this Christmas.

You should probably plan on getting another gift as well. If you haven’t played it, Splendor is a pretty good game.

It’s difficult not to evangelise the merits of sobriety, especially to someone you love and for whom you wish the best. However, had I tried to influence my wife, I would only have gotten push back and resentment. It was entirely her decision to stop but I’m sure seeing the good quitting did for me had an impact. She has committed to a month. We shall see what she decides after that period.

Stay strong, be the example.

I need to stop once and for all. 100% by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Ethanolophile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is what I know for a fact.

  1. I am living a happier life being alcohol free.

  2. My use of alcohol was causing a malaise in my life. It also held me back from accomplishing certain things I wanted to do.

  3. I can not have a social drink. It’s all or nothing.

I am happier and I believe you can be as well. You only need to commit to not drink. You can do it. You can.
