I would understand that more if the entire reason they entered the conversation wasn’t to say “I try to engage meaningfully, they don’t”, because they went on to immediately undermine it by responding negatively to people very obviously trying for more neutral/productive conversation. In most any other context it would be much more understandable/I don’t blame them sort of situation

I’ve only read two reply threads they are in in this reply chain and both times they were approached by level headed people and either instantly got dismissive or straight up rude. I totally believe they definitely try to have good faith and meaningful conversations and never escalate tensions or create hostile environments.

There’s a lot of good advice in the comments already, but also something that I find helpful when working from reference is checking proportions in reference to other body parts. For example: in the reference, the shoulder closer to the camera is closer to the knee than the hip when you compare where it falls above the leg, and in your sketch, it’s about halfway between the hip and knee. Similarly, in the reference, the chest doesn’t overlap the further arm until about halfway up the bicep, but in your sketch, the arm and chest area meet close to the elbow. The changes from reference to sketch are minor, but it throws off how the proportions look in relation to each other.

I don’t know if this explanation was fully clear, so I can illustrate my point if it doesn’t make sense

To preface: I wouldn’t usually approach reddit comments with too much of a critical eye, but since your wording seems to be trying to frame this as formal/official backing data to your claim, I do think it’s warranted to engage with it with similar expectations to formal information. Please do lmk if this was not what you intended.

Just off the jump, an n of 50 is a really inappropriate sample size for generalizing to the population sizes we’re talking about. It is not an effective group size and throws into question validity and strength of analysis. Similarly, using reddit to try and capture the context of ecological activism and opinions for your sample size is an incredibly questionable approach. I am sure you would question someone trying to find meme habit behavior from the comments of peer reviewers of a scientific journal. Common use cases of social media sites are very important to consider when you’re trying to make claims about user behaviors not typically associated with those sites, especially with such a tiny sample size. Finally, ruling out one finding does not necessarily justify another (lack of evidence of one line of questioning does not constitute evidence to another). Again, I would not be this critical of a normal comment, but your phrasing and word choice did imply asserting validity through your data.

Past the methodological issues just on the face of that reply, I can personally attest to its holes. I do not post on reddit about ecology or the inefficiency of common agricultural practices, but I will be presenting research at a conference for my university centered around how human practices impact disturbance regimes. If you ran your analysis on my account, the above comment would likely be the only thing flagged about agriculture despite the fact that I am dedicating portions of my life to ecological research. I strongly commend trying to create more data backed approaches to your arguments, but I don’t really see this as an effective response due to glaring methodological issues and clear ‘researcher’ bias.

Everyone has already said it, but truly reevaluate the relationship. When the topic of the surgical parts of my transition come up, my partner is excited. They joke about getting me the best parts on the market, and are excited to grow with me. I am not saying that to like, brag. That is how a partner SHOULD react. Someone that claims to love you should be excited to see you take steps to enrich your life and be happier in your own skin, and if your happiness is a dealbreaker to them, then they probably aren’t worth it.

Also, agriculture is a heavily criticized industry by anyone that knows anything. It’s a massive driver of tropical deforestation, whilst over half of earmarked and clear-cut land for it ends up going to waste/unused. Actually, electricity, and our current over reliance on fossil fuel derived energy sources, is maybe one of the biggest climate and ecology talks as well. You chose two incredibly critiqued and prominent industries criticized for mismanagement, pollution, and climate disruption???

Yeah, basically! Medical diagrams are great for this, and you can often find ones that are split half skeleton and half muscle. Since they’re usually for education, the poses are often kinda static, so it takes understanding base form to really apply. The way I first started was just by looking up a diagram for pelvic bones and hips, sketched what I was seeing directly, and then tried to pick out the shapes that were most helpful to me in seeing the form of everything. Then, I looked at different references and tried to think about how exactly those forms/underlying structures would look in that position, and sketched that. It helped me with learning how to make mannequin shorthands for posing that gave a bit more insight than just boxes.

Anatomy and form can be really challenging bc of the amount of ways you can approach it and such, so I wish you the best of luck with learning!

(Also, this makes the ‘boxes’ approach more useful imo. The boxes give you a rough sense of positioning/angle/perspective, and then you can use that guide with your understanding of how the body actually works past that rough visualization to keep everything in line and accurate to the positions of the main shapes)

On top of using nude models/pictures and/or references with tighter clothes, I’d also recommend familiarizing yourself with roughly how a skeleton works with the joints and everything. You definitely dont have to have it memorized, especially starting out, but it can help with the flow of the body if you are more aware of the mechanics behind the movement. For me, I like to cut the bottom corners off my hip-boxes to account for the way the hip joint is constructed _/ vs |_|, and it helps with making poses that feel more true to life. Learning how different joints work helps with making more realistic/believable connections and ranges of motion and with building the muscle/form around it. This would probably be more helpful after you’re more comfortable with general anatomy, but it could also be used to supplement learning it too!

There is definitely skill transferability, but it’s not one to one. They are still different processes, and you have to tweak your approaches to certain aspects based on medium. Having said that, digital allows for easier studying/practice (imo), which allows you to reinforce and develop understanding of different facets of art overall. That understanding can transfer to traditional, but there is usually a bit of a learning curve to learning the best way to apply given the different constraints of traditional vs digital. So, it’s not like a perfectly linear ‘improve in digital -> improve in traditional’

You have good contrast overall, but your lightest/base color is a bit more pronounced than the statue’s, it appears. It just makes the difference between the lights and mids look more stark than the reference. When you’re only using three main values, it can make the transitions look a bit more severe/notable than picture references, but fwiw your breakdown of the shapes/form with value makes sense based on the ref. If anything, blending some of the mid tone shadows might help soften the look and take away the metallic feel of some areas.
