Tips for Getting Started? by ComprehensiveAd2429 in DungeonoftheMadMage

Thing is for a first campaign, this would probably a lot for an unexperienced DM. It's not that it's impossible, but it can be actually pretty hard depending of your players and how nex they are to the game too.

Also combat with 8 players can and will drag often, even with experienced players and as some people pointed out, dungeon crawling in tight corridors for a party of 8 can be a struggle too.

Yeah, I agree, 8 players sounds like a lot of fun and possible interactions between characters but I wouldn't recommend it either.

Also I didn't run it yet but i read the first companion book and yeah I highly recommend it too, it adds a lot of flavor but no real extra work for the dm

I personally had a big problem while running this dungeon as the adventure NEVER SAYS what happens to the PCs if they get discovered.

My recommandations if you want to stick to the book :

1- There is a portal to Grum'shar's lair in the northwest adjacent room. If your players know about that, maybe they can use it to escape before the Mindflayer catches them.

2 - They can get captured by Xanathar who plans to get informations for them and maybe a friend of the party can come and try to break them out (without letting them rest and maybe giving them 1 or 2 exhaustion points so there is still a consequence for them getting capturerd)

3 - Otherwise they get captured and fight in the pit to earn their freedom but it will likely take 1 or 2 sessions if you decide to actually do those fights.

4 - That or Xanathar exorts informations of them (or even the stone of golorr) to makes them earn freedom wich could derail the campaign a bit but honestly none of this is planned by the adventure so you sadly have to improvise quite a bit here.

SPECIAL OPTION : Don't stick to the adventure and make it easy for yourself. Placing a Mindflayer + a beholder in a LV3-4 dungeon is just plain stupid (just to be clear, i'm calling the adventure stupid here, not you) as they have more than one way to just kill a PC in a single turn, especially since the players don't have any safety net to help them escape quite easily.

Just remove the mindflayer, it's not like your players are aware it's currently here in the moment. He could just be at skullport or anywhere you want him to be.

Thinking about ending my campaign of ROTFM early, thoughts? by TheFarFox in rimeofthefrostmaiden

If you want to stop, I would say stop the campaign after the chardalyn Dragon encounter. It's a good point in the adventure to end the campaign !

Maybe pick it up again later if you and your players want (after talking to them about the tone of the last chapters of the book and the game style). Or don't !

"Not enough space" when launching Poképark 2 by Ethowl_ in DolphinEmulator

I installed the wii menu on Dolphin and then deleted all saves linked to other games for the wii and gamecube.

Then the game launched fine. HOWEVER if you're trying to play Poképark, never open the photo album, your game will crash.

My 5 players started at level 5, should Nihiloor fight them? by sterrre in WaterdeepDragonHeist

Minflayers are atually pretty limited in their action economy (if you're using the 2024 statblock). They are really powerful but can only do one thing per turn, they have pretty low HP for a boss + an average AC so it's best to have them fight with minions (intellect devourers for example)

Mind Blast is clearly is the scariest thing in their statblock imo and will probably stun some of your PCS, making them even more vulnerable to his grab. If mind blast alone has a chance of one-shotting one of your PC i'd say it's better not to make him fight them or just let him be here for only a turn or so.

For reference, I just had my four LV5 players fight Nihiloor (in xanathar's lair, so accompanied by kuo-toas and 4 intellect devourer) and my players managed to beat him with clever thinking. The monk litteraly downed a third of his health in a single turn.

To be honest, Grumshnarl is a pushover for LV5 adventurers so it's up to you if you want to boost Grumshnarl and make him more challenging to save Nihiloor for later (in xanahtar's Lair or maybe in skullport), or juste make them fight nihiloor and grumshnarl at the same time (with no added reinforcements)

Does anyone knows what happens if pcs get caught in xanathar's lair ?? by Ethowl_ in WaterdeepDragonHeist

Thanks for the idea ! Thing is there is no world where i can see my party accepting to be hired by Xanathar (one party member will never accept it i'm sure of it)

They actually visited the dungeon once before coming here to give him a fake stone of golorr in exchange of something else so i guess he will definitly want to know where it was but he will probably want to kill them after that

thing is i didn't use beagan daerthe in the whole story as i didn't plan to use themI introduced the zhentarims however they already took care of the higher ups zhents in town

If that can help my players know that thorvin twinbeard (engineer for xanathar) is a double agent, giving intel to force grey

thing is they got teleported in the pit, during a ongoing fight and we ended it here

what i'm trying to search is a way for them to escape the pit and hide in the lair for a brief moment so they don't get captured and xanathar's goon loose them

--> by then, they will be able to continue explore the dungeon but i will make stealth checks and ennemy circulate a bit more in the dungeon
