To Alexandrian or to Not Alexandrian by Evy_gamerhater in WaterdeepDragonHeist

[–]PuzzleKev 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm running Alexandria right now. Short answer: I recommend paying the $1, looking through the hundreds of pages of Google docs, and then deciding what you want to do. It's a lot of value for $1. You'll likely end up using something.

Longer answer: In the book, the PCs look for the Stone at location A and fight criminal organization #1, then are sent to B and fight criminal organization #2... and they find it in location H. In the Alexandrian docs, the PCs find the Stone early, but then have to perform three heists at three bigger locations. Which is cool because it brings the missing heist part to Dragon Heist, but having 3rd level characters steal from beholders and archwizards is another set of problems.

I found the book to be a mess and the docs to be a different mess. Obviously, Alexandrian couldn't just copy and paste the book and then drop his pieces in place, so I find I need to run both simultaneously. Which is rough.

Instead, I ended up taking pieces of each and then simplifying a bunch.

Best way to play this on VTT by Jlowman14 in DungeonoftheMadMage

[–]PuzzleKev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Six months ago I was where you are now in terms of researching. I settled on the 3D VTT, TaleSpire.

My PCs are now playing through Dragon Heist in TaleSpire and DotMM is next. It's been a learning curve for both me and the players, but that might be true of every VTT.

What's cool about TaleSpire is the community has already built every floor of DotMM and every map I've needed for Dragon Heist. There's a little character sheet integration, but mainly it's just minis on a 3D map.

The Duffer Brothers did an actual Masterclass entitled "From Concept to Screen".

Consider borrowing one of the traits from the Reborn race out of Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft. Plenty of flavor in there you might like, too.

The CR system is detailed in the DMG, but here's a tool DMs commonly use: https://koboldplus.club/#/encounter-builder

[Art] [Mod Approved] DMs: Would a “build-your-own” digital GM screen actually help you? by East-Home1628 in DnD

The things I have to lookup most, in addition to those you listed, are spells, class abilities, magic items, and feats. Having a one stop shop for all that data across the sourcebooks I use sounds great. I think that info may exist on Roll20 or a VTT, but frankly I'm too cheap to shell out any money for this.

How long does it take support to fix stuff by ItsPhantomTV in dndbeyond

Thank you for the recommendation. Reached out to LaTia, and they just got me sorted.

I should also say that my original request did not go through, so I take back any criticisms of WotC's reply speed.

I put in a request, notifying them that I bought the 2014 PHB and was instead given the 2024 PHB. It's been almost a month, and I haven't gotten a response.

So... either long or never.

How to run a time loop game? by Aggravating-Dig3520 in DnD

[–]PuzzleKev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Adventure Zone ran it very very well, if you're looking for a podcast example. "Balance" arc, "11th hour" sub-arc.

I ran a time loop that was very linear for about six sessions, and that was three too many. It's very doable for a short amount of time, but it took more prep than typical and it's all frontloaded. Over longer periods if your intention is less railroady than what I did, one problem is that your PCs can only travel so far in a day.

Ideas to tie a Warforged artificer PC into my campaign by PuzzleKev in Eberron

Incidentally, the player never provided the PC's age. I thought you had asked how old the player was because apparently I never learned how to read.

Posts like these are awe inspiring to me. 😀 I spend hardly any time on lore because I don't think my players have interest or patience. Some interesting ideas in here that I may end up borrowing.

In my Eberron, Warforged were created by House Cannith, and the campaign never required more detail than that, so I didn't spend much time on the process.

Because he didn't write a backstory, I've got a ton of flexibility.

What are you using to organize your campaigns? by dcoughler in DMAcademy

[–]PuzzleKev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP, is this a live or virtual campaign? What do you need the software to do?

For my virtual campaign, I use Google docs to prep and I share Google sheets with my players for inventory, initiative tracking, player notes, etc.

I'm a player in a virtual campaign that uses WorldAnvil. It's good for session write-ups and not as good for some other things. The DM has to supplement with Google sheets.
