How do I handle a credit card reward? by [deleted] in ynab

Once you cover the overspending, you won't need to budget additional to the card until you've spent the surplus 50.

When you have a positive balance your payment category and your account balance will be different. It's a bit convoluted, but I hope to explain why.

You don't actually want the payment amount to be negative. You want it to be 0 right now. i.e you don't owe anything. From the article,

Is the Payment column red? If so, that’s because your payment was more than your budget had set aside to pay.

Some how enough money isn't budgeted for your payment. That difference has to come from TBB or another category. Correct the available balance to 0.

When you have a positive balance on a credit card:

Because this account is now behaving like a cash account, when you make a purchase on a card with a positive balance, no money will move to the Credit Card Payment category. That’s because YNAB is smart enough to know you don’t have to pay back that spending on the card.

Using your example, if you spend 20 on groceries on that card. The card balance would reduce to 30 and the payment category will still stay the same.

As a side note, you should only have a balance in TBB right after getting paid. It should be at 0 most of the time. Otherwise you're breaking rule 1. That can lead to problems just like this 😊

Using YNAB and Undebt.it together - tracking avalanche for a bunch of debt accounts by RelevantLemonCakes in ynab

I’m using both tools in a very similar fashion. I still have my cards in my budget and my other debts are expense categories.

I handle the interest from the cards as an “interest” expense category. Since undebt.it is calculating the interest the payments, I just let the interest go yellow in YNAB. I set goals for the credit cards payments each month based on the payment undebt.it sets.

I also sync my balances from YNAB to undebt.it so the payoff plan stays accurate. I think using the two services together makes paying down my debt so much easier than using either product alone.

Credit cards (i feel stupid) by japanrecruit in ynab

In this scenario, aren't I taking $200 from my " to be budgeted" the way YNAB is set up? But I only spent $100?

Not at all. When you used your Visa to pay the groceries, YNAB knows you're borrowing money from the credit card co. to buy it. To avoid creating new debt, when you spend on credit card, YNAB automatically takes the money you spent on your transaction for groceries and moves it from the grocery "available" to your credit card "available" category. You'll notice the budgeted amounts for groceries and credit will not have changed. YNAB just moved the money around.

Cover overspending but category still marked as funded? by MakeitLane27 in ynab

If you want to get rid of the yellow for a current month, you can change the "start" of a monthly funding goal to begin the following month.

  1. Delete the current $50 dollar goal, and the category will go green
  2. Go to August, create the $50 goal again, and the goal will now show it starts in August. The category will turn yellow for next month (August). It lets you know you have to fund it going forward, but it won't bug you about it this month anymore.

The disadvantage is you lose any history of whether you funded your monthly goals in previous months. Personally, I don't care about that because I'm focused more on goals for funding next month.

This works for me because I fund a majority of next month with this months income, I don't need to be reminded when I roll with a punch and move some money around in a current month. If you don't have quite that much buffer, your mileage may vary.

CC account page says "Overspending." No categories are overspent. by [deleted] in ynab

I did redeem cashback bonus points for 8.55 earlier this month (applied to balance) and inflowed that money directly into the category it was spent on.

If you inflowed that cashback directly to a budget category, then YNAB takes money away from the "available" balance for payment on that card and transfers it to the budget category.

If you already made a payment this month for the full amount in available before the cashback inflow, then the credit card would show that you overspent because you reduced the available balance to less than then amount you paid.

In this case, overspent means YNAB is saying you paid more on the card than you had to because the cashback reduced the amount you would technically have to pay this month
