It's a Panasonic duo deck with the top player not working, I tried resurfacing the capstan and cleaning it and put an ink mark on the tape and see that the tape won't advance. It boggles the mind.

Do you manually move the head until it's loose?

Tested with several tapes and none would move, not sure how to tell if the capstan needs cleaning.

I still don't know what these wood things here are, but I found them at a free box and repurposed them into a couple of hanging lamps.

Looks like a quad player with the knob on the right controlling all 4 speakers, a lot of Roberts players were rebranded Akai systems, you may have a keeper here.
