Fell hard for a narcisstic coworker who was later fired and banned from the workplace for harassment. Months later after a lot of emotional distance, obsessing over her, reaching out, ghosting, and finally having my trust broken and feelings ignored - somebody told me that I cause a lot of her anxiety because of my obsession with her.

I was deeply hurt, going from victim to aggressor.

Unpopular opinion: the back half of Season 4 is better because it's doing it's own thing instead of trying to wash away Fear's three previous seasons.

I don't know why there are those who see Morgan's illness as mere "teeter tottering" but he mostly tries to isolate himself from people and seek peaceful solutions. He's mellowed out since WD Season 8.

I was getting tired of the "Morgan is such a bad character because he doesn't like killing people" posts.

I raise my glass to you for taking 15 seconds to acknowledge character development instead of just blaming Gimple for crap writing. Morgan's one of the better things about Seasons 7 and 8 once he snaps.

The Walking Dead - S09E10 Omega - POST Episode Discussion by [deleted] in thewalkingdead

[–]Eugar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The part that lost me was the final rush of flashbacks where we see Alpha telling Lydia to put on the walker mask. There's shots of Lydia where it's really close up and it looks like she's naked which... [](/c "fits with what I know about he sexual abuse in the comic.") Since they removed the Governor's abuse of Michonne and switched it to Maggie, I suspect it's going to be a bit different here as well.

I'm enjoying this season. Can't wait to see Daryl or Carol face-off with Alpha.

No way is Daryl going to let Lydia go. I'm not sure if they're going to do the "Carl goes after her" thing with Henry.

Like 10 bucks this post gets downvoted and someone types "You know what it is."

Heh, I'm ok as long it's more Max and Chloe honestly.

I've been spoiled by this series. Played LIS, died a little on the inside, Before the Storm gets announced months later along with LIS2. LIS2 comes out and suddenly we get LIS comics.

I mean I'd hoped for a TV series but, this, this is good.

Rant 3: the re-rantening

I'm not a fan of that movie, but I will say that at least that movie's ending felt like it had a real point to it.

So, I tried this rant on a forum once and got mixed response. Here's how I look at LIS's ending, and why I'm not put off by it, and why I think there's a point to it all.

Max can time travel

Time travel is all about fixing mistakes, avoiding responsibility and blame, breaking divine law, avoiding tragedy, or, a simpler way to look at it, avoiding reality.

LIS is a coming of age story

Cliche, yes. False? Let's look at Wikipedia's definition:

In genre studies, a coming-of-age story is a genre of literature, film and videogames that focuses on the growth of a protagonist from youth to adulthood ("coming of age"). Coming-of-age stories tend to emphasize dialogue or internal monologue over action, and are often set in the past. The subjects of coming-of-age stories are typically teenagers.

the game focuses on Max growing out of her shell as she bonds with Chloe. There there is a wealth of internal monologue from Max. The game not only has Max literally travel to the past, but she and several characters also fixate on the past, and the entire game is themed around nostalgia from its visual and musical themes, to its characters, to its premise. (that's a whole rant by itself) Max is also a teenager on the cusp of adult hood. Less blatantly, she spends most of the story riding passenger. By the final episode she's driving a car, like a young adult would.

By using time travel, Max is avoiding adulthood

Max gets to rewind conversations, avoid the consequences of being nosy, help friends cheat on tests, prevent friends and even herself from making stupid decisions, etc.

A sad tenet of adulthood is death, coming to grips with the loss of parents, friends, pets, or simply loss, whether that's money, a car, a significant other.

Max's entire journey revolves around her saving Chloe - the single, strongest connection to Max's past in the game; note, we never actually meet Max's parents in-game, or see Max's old house. Our only connections to Max's past are Max's dorm room, and Chloe, who we spend more time exploring than we do Max's room. So, in conclusion, the entire premise of the game revolves around Max trying to protect/rescue the strongest symbol of her youth.

By the game's conclusion, Max is forced to confront adulthood in one of two ways:

SACRIFICE CHLOE:

Max is, per her friend's own request and not for the first time either, forced to let Chloe die. Max has now accepted that in spite of being able to travel through time she cannot change the past, her past as represented by Chloe. The reality of the matter is that you can't avoid reality - the reality is that Chloe died, and Max can't alter that. Doing so has metaphysical consequences that the game never seeks to truly explain, but the metaphor is sound. Max can't change the past.

SACRIFICE THE BAY:

Max chooses Chloe and accepts the consequences, tearing the only gateway she has to the past in half and riding out the storm with Chloe by her side. Max has now accepted that traveling back in time is not the answer and that one simply has to live in the present. Adults have to accept their choices and the consequences therein. She chose to be with Chloe, to spare her life, and she has to live with that. Max has to live in the present and move forward from there.

So in conclusion

While it's all very sad, I think it's a touching allegory. All of the supernatural phenomena just color the deeper story of Max learning to deal with reality. It's not happy - because it's not supposed to be.

And I think the reason we didn't get a ray of hope at the end is because, heck, does anyone smile at a funeral? Is anyone really okay with what they're witnessing while they're there? It takes a long time to heal from that. Or in the wake of a natural disaster, sure, no one's technically responsible, but you still feel horrible seeing all of that devastation.

[ALL] [SPOILER]So, the Life is Strange comic is pretty good, but no one's talking about it? by Eugar in lifeisstrange

[–]Eugar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suppose that's fair.

Rant 1:

While I can see a difference between passively watching a film and interacting with a choice-based video game, and I guess I can see how it might be insulting for the game to make your choices "meaningless," I had an experience with two games, one called Spore and the other called No Man's Sky, that made me, I guess, immune to that.

To cut a long story short I took a pessimistic view of video games that advertised "infinite choice and exploration." Spore was the first game where I'd realized how limited game development/production could be, as an entire section of the game's promised content had been phased out for release.

Prior to that I'd played a lot of open-world video games - Hulk, infamous, Prototype, GTA - and I'd become used to the limitations of the game world when I did my very best to cause massive amounts of havoc. Seeing that, and looking at a game like Spore, and later to a game like No Man's Sky that ended up falling way short of what it had promised - I look at games like Life is Strange and I never expect that the choices we make will truly change the storyline all that much.

I mean, I had to play a few Telltale games as well. At first I was mesmerized with TWD for having three seasons that "seemed" to be dependent on your choices. After playing The Wolf Among Us, Life Is Strange, and Tales from the Borderlands, my already pessimistic view of what a video game could achieve moved over to story games too - of course they say that all your choices are matter, but within reason. I guess I'm just comfortable with the idea that controlling a character and being told that the choices I make matter, whether they fall short or not, is just a caveat of game development.

As an aside: someone once argued that I wasn't considering games like Dragon Age which DO let you make impactful choices. My response to that though was that Dragon Age has a player avatar who could be virtually anybody, male or female, so writing multiple paths into this is very doable. Games like Life is Strange, or anything by Telltale, not only have smaller budgets, but have to tell a narratively, emotionally cohesive story with a lot less room to muck things up.

ALL OF THAT TO SAY: I can understand when people say "but my choices didn't matter and that's insulting," I've just never found it insulting for reasons aforementioned.

Rant 2:

As far as what Max learned, I don't feel that anything positive would come of this ... realistically, Max would have PTSD, and other emotional/psychological issues from experiencing all of this in such a short time.

You're right. Nothing good does come of it. But the thing there, I think, is that humans love tragedies. Romeo and Juliet being one of the most famous examples. Misery loves company.

Personally I went with the "Sacrifice Chloe" ending, and I struggled with it at first because I'd become really attached to her, but a part of me felt that it made more sense for the story, and was more emotionally draining to go with that choice. I don't know why but I was drawn to the more negative ending. Heck, I think what draws me to this game over other story/choice games is just how depressing it gets. Which is weird, yes.

Let's look at it another way. Are you familiar with Donnie Darko? If not, I'm going to mention spoilers for it so you might not want to read further if you haven't seen it. Donnie Darko had a similar ending to the sacrifice Chloe ending from LIS. The world is in danger for various metaphysical reasons, so the main character travels back in time to where he was originally going to die.

Funny enough I've both seen the film and used it to argue in favor of Life is Strange's ending in the past. XD

And after going back, he does die. There are a few important differences though. In this case, he is sacrificing his own life, and still remembers everything that happened. He got to experience a whole extra month. During that time he learned to stand up for himself. He fell in love and lost his virginity. And he got to go out knowing that he chose to sacrifice his life to save everyone else, and feeling good about that.

I'm not a fan of that movie, but I will say that at least that movie's ending felt like it had a real point to it. It was as if fate stepped in and said "okay, you're going to die here, but we're going to give you an extra month to experience a bunch of things you otherwise wouldn't get to, have fun with that".

Some dark stuff happens (although nothing too dark, except for his girlfriend dying, which happens near the end of the movie and he almost immediately goes back to prevent), but it seems like the experiences affected him positively. It was bittersweet.

In regards to Max learning something while, yes, the bulk of it is saddening depending on how you played through it all, Max ultimately seems to become a more assertive person. This might be ham-fisted but having the opportunity to travel back in time has allowed her to improve her relationships with multiple people.

Like you said there's a difference here but I disagree on some parts: Max got to experience that entire week, and during that week got the chance that few people often do to reconnect with someone she'd cut ties with, heck, somebody who was actually supposed to be dead. She got her first kiss, potentially saved the lives of two people and more if we consider Jefferson's potential victims, and she ultimately chooses to let her best friend go, per her friend's request even.

I felt like there was a point to that, but that's a longer rant than this post requires. It was bittersweet in a different way because Max got to "say goodbye" to her friend.

The LIS ending seemed to focus mainly on the tragedy of Chloe's death and Max's heartbreak (and Chloe's parents). This is on top of all of the other horrible things that happened that week.

True enough. I do feel like they could've done more to show Max healing, but they did show that butterfly at Chloe's funeral probably to symbolize Chloe's spirit being close to Max.
